i have a lot of thoughts about this book! maria was an interesting protagonist and it was refreshing to read so many of her unfiltered, brutally honest thoughts about gender, society, and particularly her transfeminine experience. it made for a quick read because i was invested in maria's (very messy) life and i wanted to see what would happen to her once the road trip half of the plot began.

on the other hand, the book's ending felt way too abrup

the writing in this book was good (especially for a debut) and the distinct character studies of the twelve women were interesting and reminded me of the structure of How High We Go in the Dark. but i cared a lot about the mystery aspect of the novel surrounding the disappearance of the two girls, which i don't feel was adequately concluded. i can't keep dealing with these ambiguous book endings being described as "satisfying," i'm not strong eno ...more
