Sometimes with big books that aren't necessarily "classics" but are nonetheless considered "important" I always wonder whether their reputation is justified or if it was purely of the moment of the book's initial release. I suspected that Wolfe's novel was an "of-the-moment" kind of situation but was really pleasantly surprised to find that this wasn't the case. I read this years ago, and certain set pieces remained ingrained in my mind: the abandoned theater, most notably, and of course the massive, terrifying cop who kicks the drama off. What I hadn't recalled was the depth of the discussion of faith, cruelty, and love that the book contained. This was especially interesting to me in rereading the book because usually I think King does an absolutely phenomenal job mainly with characters, creating livin ...more
