Ultimately, I think would land my review at 3.5/5 but I rounded down to 3/5. This horror story was a slog to get through for the first bit. Even when the main thrust of the narrative occurs there's a bit to get to and things do just kind of meander along. Maybe this would have worked better as a short story but once it picks it the book doesn't stop. My biggest gripes are the twists as they both seemed really obvious, especially by the third act.

So far this is my least favorite book in the Horus Heresy. I didn't dislike it but I found very few characters that I connected with or liked in any way. That's fine but it just makes it harder to feel the stakes of the terrible things happening. The book starts off extremely slow but after about 15-20% it picks up and has a steady pace throughout.
