This may be my least favorite of Louise Erdrich's books. The main character is Kismet Poe, about to graduate from high school and being pursued by two very different guys. Gary is a good-looking jock, who has been involved in an unspecified (until the end) tragedy within the last year, and Hugo is a pudgy dreamer, who loves working in his mom's bookstore. Three women, members of the expatriate community in Hong Kong, with husbands who are sent there to work for several years, are the primary characters in this novel. Two are directly affected by a tragic event, a small child lost in the hubbub of the city. Another is abruptly abandoned by her husband. The events are tied together in unexpected ways.
