The first section is rendered so vividly, I was hooked; the second section I found the writing too intentionally dark and off-putting. By the last coda, I was just waiting for the book to be over. A bit of a shame, as I think the structure of this book could have been rearranged to greater effect (there's a framing device that could have used a second look). Some good writing, and I appreciated how the end came together, but there’s not enough cohesion for me. Lots of digressions that didn’t have a satisfying enough payoff. 3/5
