Murder in the Cotswolds by A.B. Guthrie Jr.

James ’s first review of the year

liked it
this is a very odd mystery. Ignoring the odd premise - Montana Sherriff invited to participate in murder investigation in the UK: A UK cop would suffer amputation before giving such an invitation - the writing is just... boring? The plotting and investigation are weak. And somehow the prose just drags. I could never get through more than about three pages without having to pick up a scrabble puzzle or something.

The Forger's Spell by Edward Dolnick

James ’s last review of the year

it was amazing
Entertaining story of a famous forger in the 1930s and '40s.

This is a quick read, with a fair number of circuitous related facts and anecdotes. The core of the story is however both sad - the forger was something of a loser - and funny. Essentially everyone likes telling the emperor he's naked, and as the story stretched for a couple of decades any number of art experts and collectors were left with egg on their faces during and after the trial.
