Sorry, coming to this very late! I was born in Pennsylvania, in the USA, but currently live in Wales. In my free time I bake, garden, read, and play card and board games. Fun facts about this book--when I was revising it, I wrote a whole new chapter amidst other edits, and then accidentally sent a different copy to my editor! Then, when it came to check it for publication, it was entirely wrong! So that was very stressful, but we got there in the end.

I don't have many mysteries in my life, for better or worse! But my great grandfather changed his name without telling anyone why when he emigrated to Canada from England. The only thing we know is when his daughter asked him about it, he said, 'I've done nothing I'm ashamed of.' Sounds mysterious to me...

From a castle near where I used to live in Cumbria, and imagining the people who might inhabit it.

Usually by observing the world around me, or reading or watching other stories, or sometimes just sitting down at my laptop and forcing myself to make my word count. It's not always possible to wait for inspiration!

I consider a high-concept plot one that involves a series of events or circumstances that set up the story and drive it forward; they might be realistic or require you to suspend disbelief; examples are The Midnight Library, by Matt Haig, or The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

Finish something! Everyone feels excited about a first chapter, but it's the slog of writing a whole story that aspiring writers need to experience. You learn so much by finishing something, by seeing the character development and plot arc through. And best of all, you have something at the end of it that you can edit, revise, and hopefully send out!

This is fantastic advice! I have seen it before but it is powerful and encouraging to see it reinforced so succintly.

The best thing about being a writer is getting to do what I love and be paid for it, and also having the flexibility to work from anywhere, at anytime, which has really helped as my husband has had to move around a fair amount for work. Also, not having to go into an office or wear pantyhose is a big plus!

If I'm stuck in a story, I usually take a break and try to refill the creative well, either by reading, watching a movie, or taking the dog for a walk. I try to let my thoughts about the book percolate in the back of my mind without thinking too actively about it, and usually, almost always, an answer presents itself within a few days. That said, sometimes, with deadlines looming, I just have to push through! I can't always wait on the muse :)

Once again, you craft an easy but immensely helpful answer. For us, it is walking around our property and playing with cats.
