Barbara Linn Probst I do! I studied piano when I was young and then returned to a serious study a number of years ago. I've played most of the pieces in the book. Most of the Schubert is too difficult for me, but I set myself the goal of learning the exquisite second movement this winter—it seemed like the best way to celebrate the book's publication! You can see some photos of me at the piano on my website and also of my Dad playing the violin at four years old in Poland.
Barbara Linn Probst A complicated question! The idea for QUEEN OF THE OWLS came from a number of sources that came together at just the right moment. But at its heart is the question I've always had about how to be a complete woman, especially in a culture than tends to dichotomize women into bodies and brains, foxes and owls.
Barbara Linn Probst I've been writing, in one form or another, since I was seven years old! It's as much a part of me as the color or my eyes :-)
Barbara Linn Probst Find your voice, your truth, your reason for writing. Stay true to yourself, while being open to listening and learning. It can be a real emotional roller coaster, and it takes courage to stay grounded in the face of the tidal wave of response from "other people" (agents, publishers, reviewers; praise and criticism). Being grounded doesn't mean being closed or defensive, but it does mean staying present as you absorb and sift through the feedback.
Barbara Linn Probst Just one? Aside from the amazing joy in giving oneself over to the creative process, there are the unforgettable moments when a reader reaches out to say: "Wow" or "Thank you" or "Your book changed my life." It doesn't get any better than that—the feeling that one has given something of worth to another human being.
Barbara Linn Probst For me, the best way is to immerse myself in another form of creativity—in my case, it's playing the piano or cooking. That loosens my creative juices in a different way and often sparks something quite surprising!
Barbara Linn Probst My new book THE SOUND OF ONE HAND will be published in April 2021. I'm putting the finishing touches on it right now!
