So quick in fact, that I'm not actually sure how I got here, and by here, I mean trapped in this office, hiding under a desk, trying not to breath, let alone move, watching my life, including every dubious decision I've made to date parade through my head on autopilot. I could say that I'm an attorney, and maybe you'd think that being a lawyer would explain it, but lawyers like me don't have problems like this.

This is totally impossible to answer. Is there a world where you can flip through an encyclopedia of your favorite fictional worlds and then visit them directly? Is that like making your first wish from a genie lamp a million more wishes?

I read The Priory of the Orange Tree recently, and now I want to go back and read Samatha Shannon’s Bone Season series. I’m also making time for Octavia Butler, one of the most amazing classic science fiction writers out there. I’m always looking for new reads!

This may sound lame, but I was holding an ereader, and I thought about all of the information that we as a society have at our fingertips. When I was in high school and starting college, the Internet as we know it barely existed. Google was a tiny startup. Information was manually indexed. I don't know how kids today would survive without information at their fingertips. That was the catalyst for Compendium. I wondered what it would be like to grow up without any of that and then suddenly have it at your fingertips. The entire world of Lumin, its political strife, its environmental issues, and its culture all sprung (eventually) from that initial thought.

There are lots of triggers that get me into the mood to write. The artist who does all of the covers, maps, and art for my books has already finished the cover for Ocularum, and that is a great inspiration to write. The Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings/Hobbit soundtracks are also a good inspiration. If I am really in the zone with good music and no distractions, I can get through five or six thousand words in one evening. Some days, I am lucky to get two hundred on the page.

Writer's block, which Steven Pressfield calls resistance in the War of Art, something that I think all writers deal with. I try to follow Steven Pressfield's advice and just not succumb to the resistance. I think this is a similar theme to Anne Lamott's Bird By Bird, which is an excellent book for aspiring writers. Even if you sit in front of the screen and write the worst thing you've ever written, at least you're moving forward. You might discard it later, you might fix it, or you might decide six months from now it's the best thing ever. I would rather have a novel that needs work in my computer than no novel at all.

I am currently working on Ocularum, Book Two of the Artifacts of Lumin Series. Ocularum picks up where Compendium leaves off and follows Mia, Cedar, and the others are they continue their mission to protect Lumin.
