This sounds completely corny but the idea for my current novel came to me in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep. I'd been researching information about the drought in Queensland, in preparation for a visit I was making for an author talk, and in a half-sleep state, three characters 'came to me' with a basic storyline. I got up and scribbled it down, emailed the it to my publisher the next day and she loved it.

Reading, walking, listening to music are all, great ways to give my muse a nudge but the best thing is just to write. Anything. Writing is a discipline and unless you actually do it, you won't find inspiration.

I am currently polishing my fourth novel The Crossroads (Rural Fiction with Romantic Elements) which is due for release in December this year.

Write because you love it. Getting published is fantastic but you need to love it first. You teach yourself to write by writing. keep wracking up those words. Join a writer's group - like-minded individuals you trust and respect (and have fun with). Never stop learning. But most of all WRITE.

For me the best thing about being a writers is connecting - with other writers, with readers and with my own creative centre. Escaping into another world and getting lost in the story are pretty awesome too!

So sorry - I only just found these questions. A bit late with this answer but ... Writer's block is really just another way of saying you need to work out some problems with the story. I used to convince myself I needed to walk away from it for a while - and sometimes that's true - but generally it's just a matter of sitting my butt in the chair and writing anything that comes to mind, even if it is rubbish and then eventually something decent will surface. Walking, listening to music, reading widely are all great ways to feed your creative monster.
