One hundred yards from his camper, Sykes awoke on the desert floor, his body rigid from yet another of these damnable seizures his doctors had warned could strike without warning, leaving him immobilized in pain until help came. Feeling heavy pressure on his sternum, Sykes blinked twice, focusing on a large rattlesnake coiled on his chest, just inches from his neck.

I would do a day long ride-along with John Sandford's character, Lucas Davenport. Not sure I'd like to put myself in harm's way during the day, but I'm sure it wouldn't be a dull experience...and I'd like to be armed.

On my nightstand: "Battle of Wills" by David Johnson...a look at Lee and Grant, particularly the last year of our Civil War. Also lined up to read Greg Iles's "Natchez Burning," an unearthing of a decades old secret and the ugliness of southern guilt. Third in line is "Signing Their Lives Away: The fame and misfortune of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence" by Denise Kiernam and Joseph D'Agnese.

An older brother who served time for financial misdeeds: how did he craft his cons together? Who did he cross? What if they were connected via family to one of the Five Families? What if they came after my family because we were related to the con man in question? How could we survive facing odds like that? How far would we go to protect ourselves?

Seems self-centered but I can't pass up the chance to name my two fictional protagonists from my Tom Wolf/Sam McFadden series. Wolf, a former Navy SEAL, is based on a real veteran...as is Sam McFadden, a retired Green Beret. Theirs is not the typical bromance birthed in some Hollywood scriptwriter's imagination. Like their real-life counterparts, these two have been through the fire, speak the same language, and have each other's back. The late Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist run a close second but Sam and the Wolfman come in first.
