Brian Herskowitz He unlocked and opened the door slowly. He had enough time to think that he may have made a mistake as a sword's blade separated his head from the rest of his body.
Brian Herskowitz That's a tough one. Narnia, Middle Earth, or Hogworts would be among my top three.
Brian Herskowitz I was living in Japan and met a British woman who claimed she was being chased by the Yakuza. She came up with a very convoluted plan to blackmail the boss and split the money with me.

Before that happened, she disappeared and I never heard from her again, but a guard at the US Embassy, a marine said that a woman matching her description had shown up naked and bruised and begging for help. She said she had been kidnapped and tortured by the yakuza.

I don't know if it was the same woman or not, but I created a screenplay based on that story.
Brian Herskowitz I believe the best cure for writer's block is to research. I believe research has two basic elements (I speak of this in the book, so this is a bit of a teaser), internal, external.

Internal research comes from observation and imagination. External research is where you actively seek out information on a particular subject.

In researching a subject the writer kick-starts the creative process. The other technique I use to avoid the dreaded block is to write exercises that I've developed. That can be about story, character, voice, theme, premise. Anything that adds information and detail to your story.

Put your fingers on the keyboard every day and write something, anything. (or pen if you're old school).
Brian Herskowitz The blessing and curse of writing is that it is a solitary occupation. You and the page (could be you, a partner, and a page...)

The ability to make my own hours and the freedom that goes with that.
Brian Herskowitz Trust but verify. That is, believe in your work and your talent, but be open to input from those you trust, and of course, keep writing.
Brian Herskowitz I have a "radio drama" podcast called THRILLING STORIES that is currently on Spotify (Spotify:

I just completed my first novel CONCEPTUS. Look for it coming out soon.
Brian Herskowitz I have found inspiration from a variety of sources. My first screenplay was based on my experiences as a 17-year-old kid living on my own in Japan while training in Judo. My second came to me in a dream. Some have been inspired by the news.

I wrote a spec episode of SEINFELD that was based on a segment on a radio talk show on health. They were discussing a psycho-sematic illness called Koro. I found that funny as hell (not for those suffering from it, of course), and that became the episode. Sadly, while I got good feedback, they didn't buy the script.

Brian Herskowitz I had been working as a writer in film and TV for a while, and I was asked to teach a class at UCLA Extensions online. This was when online classes were just getting started. I had to write out all my course materials, and over time that turned into my own comprehensive examination of the process of writing a script.
