I am a freelance copy editor and proofreader for fantasy and speculative fiction. I love reading character-driven stories and getting lost in a good book. In a former life, I was a yarn dyer and knitwear designer, publishing two books of knitting patterns.

To better create consistency for the star ratings I give books I've read, I'm instituting the following system for books I review starting in 2022:

5 stars: I couldn't put this book down and/or it made me happy every moment I was reading it. Highly recommend.

4 stars: I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

3 stars: Although I'm glad I read this book, I would have been okay with hav

This book had me in its grip from the very beginning. I'm still processing my thoughts, but this book is definitely in contention for my top 10 of 2025 list (yes, I know it's early in the year).

Emotional and raw and heartbreaking and heartwarming.

This is a really good cozy fantasy...that I was just not quite in the right headspace for. Had I read it at another time, it might even be in the running for 10 ten favorite books of the year.

I'm feeling lots of uncertainty, tension, sadness, and ang

Overall a solid ending to this trilogy. It wrapped up everything and I was satisfied by the ending. The pacing for the first half did seem a little slow, but the second half went by pretty quickly.

This was a helpful overview of a lot of parts of U.S. history that doesn't normally get taught in schools. I learned a lot, but I also felt myself getting quite angry at many of the things that happened, especially with regard to foreign policy. So t ...more

Aidan Chambers
“Few pleasures, for the true reader, rival the pleasure of browsing unhurriedly among books: old books, new books, library books, other people's books, one's own books - it does not matter whose or where. Simply to be among books, glancing at one here, reading a page from one over there, enjoying them all as objects to be touched, looked at, even smelt, is a deep satisfaction. And often, very often, while browsing haphazardly, looking for nothing in particular, you pick up a volume that suddenly excites you, and you know that this one of all the others you must read. Those are great moments - and the books we come across like that are often the most memorable.”
Aidan Chambers
