Sunny My interpretation was that it was coincidental, and that James simply left to avoid discovery as a deserter after the interaction with Wickham. Maybe …m´Ç°ù±ðMy interpretation was that it was coincidental, and that James simply left to avoid discovery as a deserter after the interaction with Wickham. Maybe it was a plot device so that Sarah could 'think' he was captured and taken away by the militia, which then led to her asking several different people to look into his possible capture by the militia. To read it afterward, though, would allow you to see the vast difference in the lives of those above stairs compared to those below stairs.
