IS this book appropriate for an 8th grade girl with a history of trauma? I've read it and loved it, and I think she'd really appreciate it but I don't have a good barometer for age appropriate reading (I'm an aunt, not a mom).

How is this a coming of age story? A coming of age story implies that the characters learn lessons, grow, and change. Ty and East do none of these things.

Has anyone from an African-American periodical or newspaper reviewed this book yet? If so, what are they saying? I love the book, but it does feel odd, a bunch of white folk sitting around discussing this tale of Black teenagers.
Milo Paulus I am white as well, so I don't have a lot of say in this, but I also found it very strange at first that a white man wrote this book.

That said, it is a great novel, and it seems to capture accurately the lives of young black gang-members.(less)
