Is there a lot of graphic violence in this book?

Elise Ann I figured it out about halfway through and anticipated the ending, but none of that detracted from the power of this book for me.

Would this book be good for a book club? I'm starting a book club and thinking of using this book as our first read. I'm super nervous because I'm leading the group so if its a bad pick it's going to fall back on me.

Tom Holehan It definitely would promote discussion. The racial and gay issues are timely. Redemption vs. retribution, etc. BUT it is raw novel with brutal violencâ€¦m´Ç°ù±ðIt definitely would promote discussion. The racial and gay issues are timely. Was there some sort of history between Ike and Grayson that I missed? Grayson has a scar on his face and Ike mentions something about headbutting him and I'm wondering if maybe there were in the same prison? I don't recall it being mentioned but maybe I missed it.
