Emanuel James "Jim" Rohn was an American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker. His rags to riches story played a large part in his work, which influenced others in the personal development industry.
Rohn was the recipient of the 1985 National Speakers Association CPAE Award for excellence in speaking.
I've kept journals before in multiple methods and formats over the years. So, I'm really no beginner in that sense. Jim Rohn covers all the bases. He really only misses the modern methods of digital journals, Internet syncing, smart phones, Evernote and such methods that are an integral part of keeping journals for the past decade or so. Principles don't change, and there he touches all the bases. I think this is the perfect reference for someone wanting to start to keep a journal for the first time. It is short and concise like I like books and he doesn't waste your time. I'm more a veteran of journal keeping, but it was good to get a fresh view and a few good ideas to get back in the saddle.
"Gather enough good ideas in one area of life and you will form a solid block. Gather enough solid blocks together and you can construct a whole new life." (Jim Rohn, How to Use a Journal)
This book offers the practicalities of using a journal; everything from using it to solve problems, capture ideas, and describing how you are feeling at a certain point in life, which he says develops your communication skills. He says, "Writing in your journal is one of the best ways I know of to develop more effective communication skills. As you become better at describing life to yourself, you will find that you become better at describing yourself to life. Put in more practical terms, as you become better at saying what you really want and how you really feel to yourself, you will be able to better express yourself and your feelings to others, and in return, better able to understand what others are really feeling and really saying to you."
He shares his own personal experiences on the changes he has made in choosing the right journal. At one time he shares, he used to carry three journals, one for personal observations, one for business and a third for creative ideas. He says he had to discard this system because carrying three journals around the world was not practical. He also talks about how he used to use different colours of pens when making notes in his journal to differentiate between the subjects that he was making notes about i.e. green pen for financial matters. He discusses how each person must experiment and find the journal system that works for them. The main thing he says is that we journal; that we capture life, review what we have captured, take action, and leave what we have gathered to the next generation!
This book discusses the value of journaling, the different uses of a journal, and how you can take what you write and turn it into action to the accomplishing of your dreams!
This is a precious source on how to keep a journal, there are a lot of suggestions to start with then you can leave it to your talent and imagination, a short audiobook that needs to be relistened to from time to time :)
this is a fantastic book by the late and great Jim Rohn,
the contents of this book are more important today than ever, regardless of the age the material is now from its original publish date. In a world which is getting more and more confusing, cluttered and complicated with information flowing and battling for our attention - how can one even cope without having some kinda basic journal...
...amazing i was already doing some of this...on my iphone notes and google docs and can say first hand how helpful it is - now am at a point where i cannot function without referring to my 'online journals' on a regular if not daily basis.
Its not just about keeping a journal about life lessons, experiences and more, but beyond... - finances...goals...health and more - it is so important to document it - if you wont...who will?

Jim Rohn is my inspiration. He has what it takes to inspire and educate all at the same time. Having a journal that WORKS miracles in your life is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Jim, I now know that this is possible. I have the audiobook in Jim's own voice. This makes the experience so much better. Pick up this book and watch your life transform before your eyes.
I was motivated to get back into journaling by listening to Jim Rohn's "The Art of Exceptional Living" earlier this year. So when I saw this little gem by him, I was exited to dig into it for more thoughts on the value of journaling. It helped me see how to put more depth into my daily writing, and thereby reap more benefits.
First minute of reading this and I was blown away! Jim Rohn has a way with words that change your perspectives like no other. He says a lot of the things other people had taught me but he says them so different that is a completely new idea. Highly recommended.
I've been trying to form the habit of journaling a few times now. The idea of continuously and intentionally reflect on ones life and how one lives it really appeals to me. The habit has never quite stuck though, as I've never figured out the exact hows and whats of journaling.
This book helped with with exactly that. With some small tweaks to how I approach journaling I now feel it can finally become a permanent part of my everyday life.
Brilliant book - available as audio book on Youtube for free. I will definitely be starting to use a journal and revisit this (audio) book several times.
Beautiful. Journal seems to be an essential growth tool. This Audiotape seems to cover everything except the conflict between Electonic and Paper Journal. nevertheless, it's really beautiful Audiotape. these are some notes I captured: - Journaling: Go through half a dozen methods of Journal till you find one. Maybe it is about your needs and it may change over time. Be flexible. What matters first just start the journaling habit How it makes you feel: Colour, Cover, lines, the smell all matters A Journal should be capable of going everywhere you can go. Write a Problem that you have to try to be as objective as you can Reread and look for: § Distortion of truth: maybe your concern or enthusiasm makes it worse or better than it really is § Tendency to Blaming Circumstances and other people, not yourself. § Tendency to expect people and situations to change: things get better when you get better, passive hope will never improve the human situation § Write a Problem that you have to try to be as objective as you can
Look at your writing as a scientist: from microscope from the eye of truth: § Record your observations § Record ultimate solution to your dilemma: if it was true then good, if it was a mistake, then its more important to record it to learn § Mistakes are not shameful, but its shame to not learn from them and repeat them. § Becoming a better person on paper is a good way Write down your problem + steps you will/can/did take Suggestion: if a suggestion makes sense to you: do it tonight, don't delay it. Another function of the journal is to keep good ideas: § Human memory is not something to trust Any idea worth reading and listening, worth capturing. - Make Index: - Outline peoples behavior, what you see and what you hear, then go one step further and describe your emotions. Capture your joy of Victories and sadness of failures. It does not need to be huge accidents, all minor events count. - Better we become what happiness around us, better we become better at knowing what goes inside us - Feel free to say it all and as you wish, leaving Grammar behind if you wish. - Record date, time and location of every entry. - To be aware: to price writing down what happens externally and internally Although communication tools have been developed radically, we are a still in dark ages in understanding ourselves and each other.
Great book on journaling. I've always been good about keeping a journal to record life's experiences. But he provided great insights on how to approach journaling to record goals, thoughts, insights, quotes etc that was very helpful.
I also hadn't really considered the vast importance and benefit of keeping a journal. I've always kept a journal because it has helped me better understand my thoughts and feelings of events in my life. But I haven't considered the importance of reviewing them periodically to see how I have grown
Also I felt the importance of using a journal to record my character development. The goals I am working on. My wins, my fails, my challenges, my aspirations.
The purpose of this book is to convey the importance of journaling your ideas, thoughts and goals. To be able to look back over your life and to leave a legacy.
You can go back year by year and check your own progress toward your life's goals. You can see how your thinking has progressed and evolved.
A legacy for your children. They will have your thoughts and ideas to remember you when you pass. They will get to know you on a more intimate level through your journals. He recommends using beautifully bound journals and to write in them daily.
I enjoyed this audiobook. It seems aimed towards people who have decided that they want to improve their life and Jim Rohn believes keeping a journal is very important in order to achieve this. Rohn provides helpful tips on not only keeping a journal, but continuing to keep one without giving up half way through the year. Even if you only pick up a couple of tips from this, it is worth the 51 or so minute listen.
I love listening to Jim Rohn. He has so much practical advice and speaks in a way that not only is common sense, but makes you want to get up and get moving. I had been reading several books that mentioned journaling, but Mr. Rohn explained it in a way that has me sitting here with my journal ready to begin using it. If you are a lover of personal development and wondering what to do with a journal, then this short book is exactly what you need.
Utterly pointless and mind-numbingly dull. You need a journal...buy a journal...use your journal. The bits in between are like a church service, all giving thanks and wishful thinking. The title should have given it away. I look forward to similar classics, How to Use A Kettle and How to Use A Potato Peeler.
I am a follower of Mr. Jim Rohn. I have adopted many habits what he discussed in his discourses. Among all habits, writing Personal Journal is one of them. Initially, I didn't know what to write in a journal and how to use the same. I listen to this book with lots of expectations but this book didn't solve my problem.
I love a blank notebook, but i am always doubtful whether what I want to write in them, is worthy. This is a reread for me, because sometimes its good to be reminded that no-one is judging you quite as much as you are judging yourself.
"I intend to put something valuable in it, and you wouldn't store precious gems in an empty cigar box"
Listened to this book on youtube and was inspired by Jim half way through to go and buy a Journal. My first entry of my new Journal is about 'How to use a Journal' . Thanks again Jim Rohn for the Direction you are giving me. Awesome Audio Book.
Your journey to success should be recorded by yourself so you can know about yourself and your limit is what you decided in your mind. To keep a journal is a very essential for all who wants to be a successful person. this book is the guide which can teach you the perfect way to use a journal.
Simple, short and to the point. Nothing new if you’ve read Bullet Journal Method but a good book to read once a year to remind yourself once again what’s so great about journaling. One star more because Jim is the best speaker / reader there is.
Direct and up to the point ... This book is essential when you decide that it is the time to step on to your " most successful year ever" with Jim Rohn
