Sometimes the Truth Comes with a Price Nikki knew Damon Vessler would not let his prized creation go easily---she simply never imagined the lengths he'd go to get her back into his clutches, and turn Nikki's heart toward darkness. A Seeker at her heels, trained on her blood, Nikki flees with Raven alongside her for protection, while Mace and the other Halflings fight the battle that has erupted on earth. But even as the two boys she loves fight for her, she knows the battle will be hers to win. Determined to uncover the secrets of her past, and exactly how she fits into Vessler's twisted plans, Nikki sets off on her own, and soon discovers facing hellacious beasts is nothing compared to the decision she will need to make. One that could change not only the war, and her relationship with Mace and Raven, but her future with the Throne.
This book really made upset. In the beginning when she was running with Raven, I was super excited. This series was getting better! We all thought she was going to end up with Raven, so I was super excited because I like Raven SOOOO much better than Mace.
Then it .... didn't happen.
The whole seeker thing was over WAY to quickly, NO ONE was able to defeat I & what did it take her ... a 2 minute showdown? No. Way.
I got excited again when she ran to get herself captured REAL ACTION!! She got put in a cage & brought out to be beat. Then she died. Willingly. NO!!!
Then they were rescuing her & Raven had his "own plan"! I was excited again, then he handed the "rescuing Nikki" part to Mace. He just GAVE UP?! WHAT?!
And sure enough, Mace rescued her & eventually brought her back to life.
This book sucked ass!! **** this! NOT Recommended!!!
Then it was back to her & Mace.
The book ends with Raven bleeding from a bullet wound & crying over Nikki, holding a picture of a human he has never met, & "... but my journey has just begun."
What. The. Hell.
That is NO WAY to end the book! She was supposed to choose Raven! So all this boy trouble, with Mace, With Mace, Kisses Raven, with Mace, Kisses Raven, with Mace, With Mace.
I churned through Avenger* by Heather Burch, the same as I did through the first two books in the series. Nikki is again in the thick of a super-charged fight against evil. I think fans of YA, fantasy, paranormal romance, and anyone who likes a fun story laced with action, adrenaline, romantic tension, and truth will enjoy this series.
I enjoy how Burch weaves adrenaline-laced action with truth and the power of choices. I also appreciate how Burch communicates that all of God's children are important to Him.
There is a lot of romantic tension between Nikki and her suitors. Thanks to Burch for keeping the book free of profanity or any explicit scenes. I think the romance thread is appropriate for the genre, but as a mom I would want to know it was there.
The tag line on the book is, "Sometimes facing your destiny means risking everything." I loved this. What if more of us realized we have destinies assigned to us by Jesus? How much more boldly would we live?
*Thanks to Zondervan and DJ Communications for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.
I was already at least half-way over the fence after the first two books, Halflings and Guardian, with little hope going into the third installment, Avenger. After the major rants I'd already given, by all rights I should have called it quits on this series and gone on with my life. Alas, despite my warnings to myself, I trudged my way through another of Burch's books, and woo-boy, have I got some more ranting to do.
Read my full review at
Overall, I can't think of a moment when I wasn't enraged or apathetic with Avenger. These books have a very narrow religious view, which only narrows as the series progresses, so if you were a fan of Halflings, you might continue enjoying the series, but some may be turned off by this book. Based on the violence, I'd normally recommend it for high school and above, but I cannot in good conscience recommend this book for anyone, least of all young women. It constantly degrades women with religion as an excuse and offers relationships that are shaky at best. Avenger, for all its emphasis on faith and hope, has destroyed any that I might have had for the series as a whole.
Since I unfortunately had not had the opportunity to read the first two books in this series (Halflings and Guardian), I wasn’t really sure at all of what to expect. I knew the cover was very interesting, but ultimately? I didn’t know what was ahead. At the beginning, I was a little confused however, this is entirely my fault for not reading the books in order like they’re meant to be read. However, I figured everything out in a satisfactory manner soon enough and flew through the rest of the book; it was very easy to read. Heather Burch has a great imagination for so many fascinating scenes, and she seems full of creativity too! The book moved along quickly (but not in a rushed manner) and had all kinds of adventures and gripping suspense, along with a bit of romance. Definitely kept me reading! I really enjoyed the characters and came to really like them as the story progressed. And then there was a drop-off ending you all know what I mean! Sure hoping to read the next book. Overall? Read the whole series, not just this one. But it was good!
**Many many thanks to Charleen from Zondervan who was so kind as to send me a lovely hardcover of this book. I wasn’t required to post a positive review, nor was I reimbursed for this review in any way other than the book.**
BEST OF THE SERIES!!! I really enjoyed Halflings and Guardian, but Avenger was even better! Heather Burch does it again. I really hope there is more to this series. I can't say much here without revealing a huge spoiler, but let's just say the ending leaves a lot open for future stories! This is an amazing series that I highly recommend for all fans of young adult books... no matter your age. ;) Nikki is still one of my favorite characters. She's real and easy to relate too. Nikki Youngblood is the kind of role-model our girls need today. As with the other books, I read it in two days. This one is even more of a page-turner than the last two!
I liked it but im not sure if it is going to be the last one or not. there was parts that made me very happy and some that made me sad , but I really liked all 3 books and I think if you like books about half angles hen you should these books.
From the absolutely beautiful purple front cover: Sometimes facing your destiny means risking everything.
For those of us booklovers who are not into stories about revenge, a book titled Avenger may sound risky. Well, take heart and be encouraged if you feel that way because the conclusion to Nikki’s story is what I found to be the best book of the series and there was nothing about revenge in it. The book is 300 pages long, but it will not take more than a day to read because the story will grab you from the first page and keep your attention throughout. Reference to Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast.
What I Loved about this book:
~The cover, I’m a purple lover so I don’t get tired of looking at it.
~It’s nonstop action and romance, I truly believed these elements were perfectly balanced in this story.
~Nikki has finally decided who she’s meant to be with, since I’m not a fan of love triangles in YA books that just makes the story all the more enjoyable for me. Raven doesn’t stop his antics or the intense way he looks at Nikki, but she refuses his moves.
~There is a spectacular motor bike race with the Halflings in this book during the one or two parts they’re not fighting that just enhances the story tremendously.
~Nikki is a Halfling, and her transformation is completed (that alone is worth buying this book, but there’s still more)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Her reaction and the reaction of the other halflings to that, it just makes the story shine..like she graduated, now she’s officially part of the halfling family and she now has a real identity to go with her destiny. Awesomeness all the way.
~This book doesn’t just have halflings; there is still Damon Vessler to deal with (it’s amazing how evil and cruel he is), one utterly nasty monster called a seeker, one brief scene with more hounds from hell, Xian (used to be a Halfling but now is totally human living a mortal life but still involved in the fight of God versus the darkness), one famous singer, one pastor, a Seer (can see things before they happen-like a prophet but more intense), one hilarious explosives expert, an interesting character called the Owl, more halflings, and even an encounter with Jesus (my favorite part of the book and the most precious scene for me).
*ZERO RUNS THE NETWORK ZERO RUNS THE NETWORK ZERO RUNS THE NETWORK ZERO RUNS THE NETWORK* ~Raven and Zero are the heroes in this book. They have larger roles in Avenger and they’re both brilliant in this story. Based on what I felt about Raven in book 1, I never thought I’d say that, but he definitely won me over.
~Halflings die in this book, that’s not what I love though. What I love is how the remaining halflings respond to that, it’s truly gripping because despite how they’re not supposed to have human emotions they are just as sensitive when one of their own suffers or is killed. Their job is to fight for humans, but they constantly risk their lives without hesitating to protect Nikki and each other.
~Nikki gets faith in this book (kind of started in Guardian) and she learns the value of prayer. The Throne becomes PERSONAL to her making me love this book even more. Halflings are such cool characters with super strength and abilities..but we learn in this book that there’s SOOOOOO much more to spiritual battles than combat fighting and martial arts maneuvers. Prayer and faith are essential to fighting the supernatural and we are introduced to a wonderful pastor and his intercessor prayer warriors in this book.
~It’s commented more than once that female halflings are the weaker part of the species and this leads to one fight and one or two arguments. However, there was nothing offensive to me about this and I enjoyed seeing how the girls respond to it.
~The questions and dislike I’ve had about halflings being welcomed into Heaven when they die is answered and resolved in this book. There are two scenes that give this discussion closure and Burch does them brilliantly.
~Nikki longs to understand her past and Vessler’s investment into her life. She gains a new perspective about the Almighty and learns to let go. It’s amazing how evil can hold things over us and trap us with regret over the past. Nikki learns true redemption and freedom in Avenger. With this valuable lesson, Nikki’s character has a complete transformation. I absolutely loved how Burch illustrates this compared to Nikki’s character in book 1. Nikki’s last name is also explained which is connected to Vessler and she is able to overcome her anger/bitterness towards the Throne. That to me is braver than any karate move she can execute. Facing your inner dark self, anger, hurt, disappoint, and strongholds and surrendering them to the Almighty……it changes everything.
The two things I didn’t like in the story are minor points because the overall story was GREAT; Mace proposes an offer to Nikki that I thought was out of character for him. However, it’s a good thing he brings it up for discussion because it shows that he loves her and is willing to make another sacrifice if it pleases her.
There's one thing I don't understand in the end and it’s heartbreaking. Again however, I’m now seeing that there will be a book 4 so more will be explained there.
I wouldn’t consider Avenger a stand alone. Don’t let the title fool you, this is not about a selfish character determined to reap vengeance. I laughed with this book and I cried, but I experienced all of it like I was there with Nikki and the other halflings. The villain in Avenger has been the villain all along and he is a worthy opponent. Apparently halflings have a weakness with Titanium and Vessler makes sure to use plenty of it on them. There is plenty of violence in Avenger, but nothing I considered graphic. Two halflings are beaten and tortured in the story and a few are killed, which had me somewhat cringing but it only makes the story that much more personal. Not only does Burch bring these characters to life, but she has you cheering for them the entire time. I saw this book play out as a movie and would definitely want to see that if the filmmakers kept the heart of the story with the script. I highly recommend Avenger for those who enjoy good clean YA books that is also action packed and this one brings Christ into the plot in an unconventional way, so awesome!!!!
I want to thank Charleen at Zondervan for sending me an ARC copy for review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.
NO NO NO NO!!!! My god this book broke my heart! Ok so I read the first 2 books in this series and was like "yes this is such a good series so far" Then I get to the last book and I'm pulling my hair out. In the beginning of the book "Avenger" Nicki's romance obviously seems like she is going to fall for Raven WHO IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN MACE! All the clue are leading to Raven being Nicki's lover but then OMG SHE ENDS UP WITH MACE! Nicki goes off to run away from the seeker with RAVEN. They litterLy almost kiss and Nicki is thinking all this stuff how she and Raven are so much more alike and you think "yea they will definitely end up a couple" but no. Mace is her so called match when all Mace did was be an overprotective jerk to Nicki. So yea. And also the seeker fighting part? That went by way to fast. They were all making a big feel out of how nobody has ever killed it before and how it's super dangerous. Then there is a 2 min battle and obviously Nicki won. Lame. Overall this book was just not for me. I don't recommend it.

I was going to give this 3.5 stars...but the ending just didn’t wrap up this series quite like I would have wanted. Things I liked about this book: the action. There is a lot of it and that is quite nice. I also liked how it never truly let on what the antagonist was up to until very late in the series. Things I did not like: the main character. Some of the supporting characters and the ending. To me it didn’t really end. That is something that bothers me but that’s just my personal opinion. This book had so much potential. Especially the story line and characters. However it just fell short of a great read unfortunately for me.
This book tore out my heart!!! By the end of this story I was balling and weeping and I didn't know if I was going to make it to the end of the story. Just wow!! This one was so tense until the very last page and now were getting three more books with these characters so I couldn't ask for more!! I loved how this one was fast paced like the others but with a darker feel. It was way empowering for Nikki to finally come into her own and figure out who she wanted and learn that she wasn't just a little girl anymore. That she was powerful in her won right.
I actually really enjoyed this book as a conclusion to the series. Going into the series I didn't realize that there was so much of a faith aspect, and I was pleasantly surprised. I thought the author did well at portraying the spiritual journey of the characters. Seriously, is there a fourth book what is going on?!?!

This book is better than the other two.... I’m only upset (personally) because my favorite character died........ . . . . . . Favorite character: Raven

I would like to thank Zonderkidz-Books and Heather Burch for providing me with a copy of Avenger for an honest review. I thought this was a great ending to the series, and wrapped it up nicely while still leaving it open for possible spin offs. While I thought Guardian, book 2 in the series, focused on the love triangle, Avenger did a great job at wrapping that up and leaving me pleased with the outcome, while also bringing on more action and adventure that didn't revolve around all that love.
This series has been about Nikki, and she finally gets to fulfill her destiny and be an "Avenger" in this final book. This required some more growing on her part. Nikki was finally able to recognize and feel faith. She had thought she found it in book 2, but realized it was Raven's faith she was depending on. And she was able to find the strength, through her faith, from Raven's efforts to keep her safe, and through Mace's love, to defeat a new monster, the Seeker, that was sent after her by Damon Vessler. What a lot of action this was. But it made everyone stronger, and they all realized where their strengths were and where they belonged. And she finally gets to become a Halfling with beautiful wings.
But of course, the action did not end there. Vessler still needed Nikki as the pawn in his evil plan for world domination. His plan to bring her to the dark side continued until the end. This was made possible by the added kidnapping of one of the Halflings own, and using it to lure Nikki to his lab. From here it was a battle for who would stay strongest, and ending with some sacrifices that will bring tears to your eyes.
And I have to talk about Damon Vessler. This has got to be one of the characters that I hate the most of any character ever. He used anything and everything to try and bring Nikki to the dark side. And he wasn't above any means of pain, torture, conspiracy, or blackmail. Pure evil. His ways had me even hating the book at one point.
I love the Lost Boys, and Heather Burch did a great job at building their characters to have me torn between who I loved most. I love how Vine always needs candy, Raven is fun and reckless yet strong and there to save the day, and Mace is a determined leader and always pushing to do better, yet compassionate.
Nikki is another story. One minute I like her, and the next I wanted to strangle her. But her motivation was always to save someone else, and sacrifice herself for them. So I cannot fault her for that. And in the end what she did was what was tear inducing. And at least in this book she was stronger and did not faint.
This story was full of non-stop action, adventure, and romance. It made me angry, made me cry, and taught a little about faith, as it does have some religious aspects to it. I enjoyed it very much, and recommend to all those angel lovers out there.
Wow. I was very very surprised by this book. I hadn't liked and connected with the first two that much. And the romance, in the first mostly, felt fleshly to me. And like Nikki was playing both guys. The second book was more interesting although I didn't like the ending a ton.
Now in this book we find Nikki with Mace although Raven is still trying to change her mind. Right off the bat the adventure starts with a mysterious, unbeatable, terrible creature called a seeker coming after Nikki. Raven takes her and they flee all around trying to escape and find a way to beat the seeker. From there they have battles that need to be fought, physically and spiritually. And the final battle as well, Nikki's grandfather is after what Nikki can give him. An army. He is determined to change her and then create "darklings" with her DNA.
The pros:I really, really liked it. I connected with it, I felt like the characters and everything flowed a lot better and despite the dark elements and the fears the book didn't feel dark. I want to be happy when I'm reading a book. And there was faith and hope in this book as well that really shone through. The ending was perfect and there was a really cool part where the seeker was warded off by prayer warriors.
I really liked Raven's character, Mace and Nikki. And several of the b characters as well. The three main characters really seemed to have matured and I was really happy and proud of how they ended up :) I was definitely smiling in several scenes and with several lines. I couldn't have been more surprised with how happy I was with really everything in this book! It was the perfect ending. One that was mysterious, happy and hopefully a reader pleaser for everyone.
The only problem that I had with this book was that at one point a couple characters are captured and beat up. When the author is focusing on them I couldn't help but feel that the beatings seemed to stretch over a longer period of time than for the other characters who were wondering where they were. It seemed like the beatings lasted over a couple days when "really" it was only a couple of hours or a morning.
Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised and I would recommend this book to several of my friends! The ending I felt really connected to God (it's this Jesus thing at the end...so beautiful) and uplifted! I really enjoyed this book and would recommend to YA girls who are looking for some clean, exciting paranormal/supernatural romance and adventure :)
Content wise there are some battles and injuries. A couple kisses and angels and demons portrayed in the Christian view.
Warning: Some major FanGirling will ensue in the duration of this review.
My God. I cannot even begin to express the amount of perfection. As I've mentioned before, i do so very much adore the Halfings series of books.
I've said how much I've loved watching Nikki especially grow and find her purpose in life. Now more than ever, Nikki has found her purpose and she is driven to stick with it. Nikki has finally found her backbone and she is set on the path that she will walk; and she will fight with all she's got to keep to that path, possibly to the death. She is someone to be admired, someone to look up to. I would be honored to follow in her footsteps as her path is steady, stable, and serves the best of purposes. Nikki is my hero, and my opinion of and connection to her only grows as I read on in her story of triumph and sacrifice.
Nikki is not the only one to see much and major growth in this addition to the Halfling's journey. Though Nikki definitely saw some major growth in this story, above all, I think that this was a story for Raven and about him setting his feet on the path that would see to his own personal hope and spiritual strength.
Raven, up to this point, I have not been able to maintain much respect for. He was too much like every other self-centered A-hole (pardon the language), that authors like to thrust upon the main character simply because he is an "Oh my gawsh, Drool worthy Bad-Boy! *squeals*" Ugh. Shoot me please, and spare me the eye rolls.
HOWEVER, when Raven made the choice to put Nikki's safety first, when she most desperately needed his support, he went against his very natured and put his own emotions aside in order to coax Nikki from the darkness. In this moment he held my deepest of respects. A lesser being would not have been able to find the strength to do what he did; to let go of the very thing he had fought so hard and long for, in order to save her. My heart went out to Raven in this book, and I sincerely hope that he gets what he so richly deserves in the journey that awaits him after this book.
I have had the best time following the Halflings family on their journey to achieving the greater good for the world and themselves. I am beyond eager to see what lays in store for them next. And BIG changes are happening. The implications of the changes already occurring are monumental and I pray that the Halflings are prepared to face the ultimate challenges that lay in wait. For the worst is definitely left to come.
I'm rooting for you, My Beloved Halflings Family!! <3 Fly On!!
I really enjoyed the first two books, sometimes I hated who the main character choose but hey, not always my choice. However, I found myself getting bored with this final book and had to force myself through it. It was sadly not what I was looking for.
Nikki is a lot less torn in this book when compared to Guardian (and I appreciated the toning down of the love triangle). At first, while Raven and Nikki were on the run from the Seeker (which was legitimately scary, by the way) and Mace is back at Viennesse, I was the one torn. Raven was being, well, Raven (part protector, part flirt), and Nikki wasn't having it. I liked that, but at the same time was wavering in my Mace loyalties.
Any book that can make me wonder just who the heroine is going to end up with is a keeper.
The fast pace and unrelenting action that I grew so fond of with both Halflings and Guardian returns full-force in the third book in the series. So many answers are revealed in this one! Vessler is as evil as ever, but there's a twist to even his character in the end. Raven provides a key to his and Nikki's relationship (page 146 is pivotal). Mace is as dedicated and sweet as ever, but there's even a change in him that rockets up the respect level.
What I Didn't Like As Much
I'm still unraveling the theological logic given on page 213, but, as with the other books, I appreciate that Heather Burch never distorts Scripture or says something that makes me squirm. This is a paranormal with half-angel, half-human beings, after all, though, so the super-unexpected ending and even the darkness is well-played.
This book gets quite dark without being over-the-top depressing (there's plenty of comic relief, supplied mostly by the candy-loving Vine and surprisingly-heroic-but-still-adorably-nerdy Zero). I like the ending because it totally had me thinking we were going to lose a major character -- or all of them.
Any book that can make me wonder if everyone's going to die -- and make that somehow seem strangely okay -- is a keeper.
I feel like Nikki backpedaled a little in this one. She had made so much progress in the second novel towards becoming the heroine, the Halfling, that she needed to be and she lost a lot of that in between. I was a little annoyed with her character at times in the way that when you watch a horror movie you want to shake the idiot main character who always wants to do the exact wrong thing to do when you're in a horror movie. Nikki had her horror movie heroine moments. But having read the entire novel I think I can see why she needed them to get across the overall motif of the series. Because you do question yourself. You do make progress but you backpedal too.
Religion became a stronger factor in this volume than either of the previous books but Heather Burch handled it in a way that made it not come across too preachy. It was readable and didn't feel as if you were sitting in a sermon. [The worst preachy books always make me feel like a little kid again, dragged to church, listening to an old man drone on while I fidgeted...and you don't get that feeling at all in the Halflings books.] And it was part of the plot, part of the development so it worked within the frame of the novel itself. [AKA it wasn't religion for the sake of religion, it belonged!]
It was just as readable as the first two; you start reading and you just don't want to stop and even when you have to stop you fall back in just as easily every time. Its one of those books that you don't necessarily want to put down but you can if you have to and there is no period of trying to get back into it, you're just there as if you never left. Overall I thought it was a solid novel and a good ending to what I believe to be a trilogy.
A special thanks to Netgalley and Zonderkidz-Books for my copy of Avenger.
Avenger starts off basically where Guardian left off. Nikki and her fellow Halflings are trying to lie low. That is until Raven comes back, and wisks Nikki away in an effort to save her life from a creature that was sent to hunt her. While dodging this creature, Nikki manages meeting new friends, and trying to sort out her feelings for the two men in her life, all while trying to come to grips with who and what she is. The point of veiw in this book jumps around quite a bit. I am not sure that I loved that. We get to hear from Nikki, Raven, Mace, Vine, and Zero. While I like all these characters, it is kind of challenging to jump around to so many different voices. But at the same time we get to see what all these characters are thinking. There is a good amount of action, there is quite a bit of sorting through feelings, and pining and self-doubting... But all in all, it is a well written book. I was suprised that it is not just a trilogy. I was assuming it was. There is more adventure to be had, and more time to see what happens to Nikki and all the other halflings. I have enjoyed the Halfling series. I like that it is a more morally influenced angel series than others out there. The relationships are not just insta-attraction, and then lets sleep together. There is more building on friendships and sacrifice which is what love is all about. Thank you Heather Burch and Zonderkidz-Books for publishing a good book... one that i would share with my daughters one day.
A copy of this book was given to me free, in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was the third and final book in the Halfling series. For the most part, I enjoyed this one. I actually think that this may be the best book out of the trilogy. In this installment, Nikki is a halfling and she knows it. She has ended the triangle by choosing -finally. But everything is far from over. Vesseler is still out there and still wants to turn her to create and lead an army of dark halflings. Nikki must face and destroy the most dangerous enemy yet and it's not Vesseler or herself.
Without giving too much away, this book is about more than just dealing with the dangerous enemy. Nikki has to face her current situation and deal with Vesseler. She is stronger and has a secret weapon. Everyone surprised me in this book, especially Raven. I thought that we were past doing rash and impulsive things since nothing good ever comes from it. But I guess not. I was also certain that Nikki would stop whining. Again, I was wrong. Right when she would start to toughen up, she would fall back into old habits.
I like Raven a lot more in this installment. It seems that he still had some growing pains to go through. The ending was not what I expected, but a lot more of what I did expect. The problems that I had with it are: it's still vague and it didn't really provide the closure I was expecting. I did enjoy it, but there was still something about it that bothered me a little.
Sometimes facing your destiny means risking everything.
Something is coming after Nikki and nothing can stop it. Raven is determined to keep Nikki safe and takes her into hiding. But where can you hide when your blood is calling to your enemy?
The other Halflings are hiding something from Nikki, something about her past and Vessler. Something that Nikki feels she needs to know. But the others are trying to protect Nikki from the truth of what Vessler has planned for her.
Nikki's need to know gives Vessler what he needs to bring Nikki to him of her own free will. Now if he can just turn her Nikki will become the mother to a race of Darklings who will destroy the Halflings.
Avenger is Nikki's journey of discovery. A journey of the spiritual. A journey of the heart. A journey of self. And a journey of sacrifice. Join Nikki as she discovers what it is to be a Halfling and the desires of her heart.
Avenger brings Nikki's journey of discovery to an exciting and emotional end. I highly recommend Avenger to anyone who has read the previous two books Halfings and Guardian and well as fans of YA and speculative Christian fiction.
I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and DJC Communications in exchange for my honest review of Avenger.
For the most part I enjoyed this series. It is definitely an improvement over the Twilight series as Mace and Raven tended to protect Nikki rather than inflicting harm. There were some good twists throughout the series.
However, I am not a fan of teen romance or Christian romance, so the series got increasingly mushy and sappy to me. It was clean though, so even though I am not a fan of the romance genre I would still recommend it to young adults and up.
I liked Nikki Youngblood’s character arc over the course of the three books. Beginning as a somewhat awkward and artsy with wide-eyed innocence learning about the spiritual world, to feisty, bring-it-on chick, and then gaining wisdom. Even Raven and Mace changed through the series.
While the Halflings look perfect, each one had an Achilles heel. Being the offspring of full-blooded angels and humans, halflings cannot have salvation, but are judged by their deeds. They still have a choice to make, and a lot more time for deeds and choices as their life-span is longer than humans. They can be injured and killed, but can self-heal. Heather Burch gave distinct characteristics to each Halfling (Raven’s living on the edge attitude, Vine’s sugar addiction, Zero’s knack for computers and addiction to juiceboxes, Glimmer’s fashion sense).
Overall, good writing that kept me turning pages and wanting to finish the trilogy.
I understand why Mace was chosen to be Nikki's match, but it felt so, so wrong to me. She was so strong and free, something Raven really needed. And Nikki needed Raven because he let her be herself, and knew the real her no matter how she tried to hide it. Ravens attraction to Dr. Richmond's daughter also maddening to me as a reader. I know she reminded Raven of Nikki, but becomes a bit obsessed even when he has accepted that Jessica is not Nikki. Although all modern readers complain about the deaths of main characters, I feel like Nikki should have stayed dead, and watched over the other Halfings as they continued their journey's. Not that her revival wasn't touching and powerful...but it was expected and made the ending of the story quite abrupt. The fact that Raven dies as Nikki comes back to life also strikes me as odd, but I loved it. It was as if Raven was taking Nikki's place in Heaven so that she could live with Mace on Earth. Overall, the books were amazing and I absolutely loved reading them. There were so many twists and turns throughout the story and the unconditional love Raven and Mace both gave Nikki was wonderful. I'm so glad I found this trilogy in the book store (the last books in the trilogy left on the shelf :P). I'm recommending it to everyone who seems to have even a vague love of literature. The Halfings Trilogy is truly a piece of art.

Probably the best of the series but still, that's not saying a whole lot. The beginning was Raven and Nikki just getting shuffled along, being sent from person to person in a way that my attention was really more focused on how fast I could skim a page rather than fully reading it. Nikki defeats the seeker. Yay. It was supposedly almost impossible to kill but somehow she managed it. She rips Raven's heart out in the cave which did get me emotional cause he was my favorite character and I just don't really like Nikki and Mace in the first place. Vegan and Zero are a match. Duh. Zero is taken, Nikki tries to martyr herself, they are both beaten to the brink of death before help comes. Nikki dies but then comes back. OH yea, and Raven just DISAPPEARS. Not much with Richmond was really resolved and Damon in still out there but Raven leaves the group after his fake death in the explosions and is like, 'well, I guess I better start my new journey'. What the heck. That's not a resolution. That's a piss-poor excuse for a conclusion in my opinion. Oh well, just glad that this series is over
I loved this book. I eagerly anticipated this book and it did not disappoint! Nikki is back and different. With all she has been through with Vessler, Mace and Raven, she doesn't feel like the same person she once was. She has chosen Mace, or at least that is what she thinks until Raven shows up and whisks her away. Both of them love her, Vessler needs her and the Throne has plans for her.
I like the changes in Nikki. She is strong and sure of herself. Mace is still protective and the leader of the halfling group. Raven is still a loose cannon and in love with Nikki. I loved all the new characters and seeing all the old ones. I still have questions and I hope the author is going to continue some with these characters!
This is a solid 5/5. Great book in this series!
Many thanks to the publisher for the review copy of this book (via NetGalley). I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
Well, I have one comment that sums up my experience: What. In. The. World?!!
Avenger was captivating from beginning to end. There were a couple places where there should've been some commas, but really, who cares about that? ;)
I'm glad that FINALLY Nikki decided who she is going to be - although not by her choice. But I now know that Raven only brings her sadness and anger and brings her down. I dunno, I was kinda leaning toward Raven, but then again I am NOT Nikki (I'm happy about that, poor Nikki).
I really liked the ending, where Nikki lost her wings to ensure that she wouldn't go over to the darkness. I especially enjoyed when she came BACK FROM THE DEAD and had white wings!
I wish they knew that Raven wasn't dead. However, I think he's going to go after that doctor/teacher's daughter, I forget her name but she has to take insulin shots every single day. I wonder how that'll turn out.
QUESTION: WHEN IS THE 4TH BOOK COMING OUT?!
