IN HER WORDS: I've been a writer all of my life -- it is who I am. I write for myself and always have. The ability to create pictures and emotions with words is such a miracle to me. I read everything; I mean everything! All kinds of books, even encyclopedias. I am fascinated by the written word and I love storytellers. It is a great privilege to be counted one myself. ()
"Who is this idiot, Jess? He’s willing to kill you and rape a woman, but doesn’t want to hurt a minor. Is he kidding?" "Criminals have to have some standards, baby." Jess sounded amused.
Another hit for the Ghostwalker series! Predatory Game was flippin awesome. The series just keeps getting better and better. Although I will say that as the series goes on it does seem to be getting darker as well.
“Pressure switch. Now they know who they’re dealing with. Fucking amateurs want to play with me in my own house. “And all this time I thought you were so sweet.
What this book is about
Jesse and Saber have been living together for almost a year now, ever since Jesse took her in. Jesse knows Saber is running from something, but he doesn't know what. Jesse and Saber are best friends. Jesse and Saber are in love with each other and hiding it from the other. Jesse and Saber are also both Ghostwalkers and hiding it from each other. What will happen when the truth comes to light and the past catches up with them?
“You’ve always got one foot out the door, Saber. No matter how much I tell you I love you or that I want you, no matter how many times I tell you that you’re my world and I’d give up everything for you, it isn’t going to matter if you don’t feel it too. I can’t make you want to stay. And I’m not holding you against your will, as much as I’d like to.
Jesse:
“I’ll never let you go, he warned softly, implacably. “Be certain, Saber, if you come to me like this, you’re mine. If you do this, you’re mine.
Jesse who we first meet in the 2nd book, is in a wheelchair. That isn't going to stop Jesse. He is a fighter and he is determined to walk again. He is very level headed. If him and Saber fight he doesn't go all caveman. He gives them time to cool off and listens to how she feels, but if Jesse wants something he goes after it like a shark. Jesse is super loyal. Loyal to his country, family, Ghostwalker team, and Saber. He is highly intelligent, but still kicks total ass even in a wheelchair.
“You’re afraid, Saber. You’re fighting me us because you’re afraid to be crushed, to give yourself to me when I might betray you. Really betray you. You’re afraid to give me your heart because you’re afraid I could hurt you worse than anyone ever has. Why would you think that, Saber? He held her face so that she was forced to look at him when she wanted to turn away from the truth. “I’ll tell you why. It’s because you love me. You love me so much it scares you. And you know how I know that? Because I love you, just as much. All of you, every part of you, from that poor little child who was forced to kill, to the beautiful, courageous woman who’s trying so hard never to kill again. I love you, Saber. I love you. And, if you leave me, you might as well kill me before you go, because I will be dead without you anyway.
“No, it just pisses me off. These men work for whoever is betraying our country and whoever that is ordered them to torture my sister. I’m taking them all to hell, but before they go, they’re going to know they fucked with the wrong family.
Saber:
“The wheelchair has never mattered, Jess. If something happens, you’ll get us out. I know you will. Her blue eyes met his. “I trust you completely.
My heart bled for Saber. I felt very connected to her. I understand her fear. She has had one of the hardest lives except for maybe flame. Even with everything she has lived through she still has dreams. She stands up for what she believes in and she tries to find happiness where she can. She is playful and sweet. She doesn't like hurting people, but if anyone tries to hurt the people she loves(Jesse and his sister) She will take them out!
“I know you so well, dragon king, you only get that particular look on your face when you’re burning to give me one of your lectures. “Do I give you lectures? He frowned. She grinned. “Oh, I don’t mind. I think you’re kind of cute when you do, and I don’t really listen anyway.
“It’s so easy for you, Jess. You have it all. The parents. Patsy. Your friends. Everyone respects you. I come from nothing. I don’t even have a name or a birthday. I can do all the things Patsy can do because I was educated for the purpose of fitting into any society to kill. That was my main goal for everything I ever learned.
“I really do love you, Jesse. So much I don’t know what to do with it, she whispered.
“Well, I believe in fairytale endings, he told her. “My parents have been together for years and they’re still very much in love. I want a family, Saber with you.
Jess and Saber have a very sweet romance because they have been best friends for months. They know each other so well already that there is a close intimacy to their relationship and a playfulness that is cute. They also have this pent up passion that explodes when they come together!! I love them together. Someone has a baby in this book. There are bad guys coming out of the woodworks in this book. This book I feel is a turning point in the story plot, and things are really starting to heat up. They are all kinda going underground now because they don't know who is friend or foe, and they have people coming at them from every side. I can't wait to see what happens next. I am on to the next book below I leave my favorite moment in the this book:
“It was. I was abandoned. Left behind. Deserted. I’m dreaming of retaliation right now and you’re disturbing me. He brushed the tip of her breast with his lips, feather light. “What kind of retaliation? He felt her stomach muscles bunch in answer. “I’m finding one of the very hot Special Forces marines to take your place. He will adore me and never leave me. “He will get his throat slit and you will be punished severely. Go back to sleep and dream about a proper retaliation such as killing me or something. That’s much more appropriate. And no jarhead could ever take the place of a SEAL, baby.
Not so much a review as just some thoughts that occurred to me on this read:
I don't like the narrator's voice at all. Even still, I have to listen because I love the books so much.
I listened to this at night before bed, and I kept falling asleep and having to rewind. Not because it's not good, but because I dozed off. I still love the book and how different the romance plays off. I adore Saber. She is so badass. Jesse is such a sweetie when he wants to be, but also really deadly in other moments. I still love how OP his telepathic abilities are. They are a great pairing.
My favorite kind of hero is the unassuming dude who is crazy lethal. More of this please. (Shoutout to Brian and also Jesse when he's being sweet and wooing Saber).
Can I get a Brian/Patsy short story or something?? ****
Reread Completed August 2016.
I love this series, period, but this book sort of stands out because it is the most conventional setup. Boy meets girl and falls in love. But it happens that girl is an assassin with special abilities who is hiding out and boy is a special forces soldier who works for the government trying to catch traitors. Jesse comes off as being sweet but kind of crazy at the same time. I loved Jesse and Saber together. And it was great to revisit with them. I freaking love this series.
****3rd Reread between 6/16-6/19/12 My Thoughts:
I loved the unique vibe of this story. Well honestly, all the books are different, but this one starts out sort of deceptively. It's kind of a boy meets girl book. However, then you realize that these friends turned lovers are not exactly typical. They are both lethal killers and they don't want each other to know that. It was so cute how they both had feelings for each other and were just barely keeping things on a friendly level. Until those feelings exploded into something more. Boy did I enjoy watching the sparks fly!
Jesse-- This man is so adorable. He's like a deadly teddy bear. He doesn't look like one, he's all hot, hard man with a seductive smile. But he's sweet and caring and protective, like a little kid's teddy bear that they take to bed to keep the boogeyman away. But beneath that is a very lethal man who will protect those that belong to him. I loved that he wasn't willing to let Saber go, to run away from him and what they had together. That kind of hero is my favorite. The man who will do anything to get and keep his woman. They make me sigh. So he's the best of both worlds. The scene in the basement just gave me shivers. I don't like killing or violence for the sake of violence, but I honestly love a kick*ss hero like no other! His power is so fantastic, and kind of scary. He proved to Saber that she was safe with him and he could protect them both. Together they are formidable.
Saber-- I loved her character. Lethal but having the appearance of a beautiful girl-woman. Very small but fierce. She's a protector, not a destroyer as she has been led to believe. Her heart is not that of a killer. It never could be, but she fears that part of herself. To the point that she stays on the run and doesn't allow herself to get close to anyone. She thinks she's not good enough for Jesse, but she's the one woman for him. I love how she tries to protect Jesse because she thinks he needs her protection. You could see her love for him, even when she was afraid to love him. I understood her issues. Holding back out of fear. I was glad that she found that place of rest with Jesse, and came to realize that the GhostWalkers were the family she was always missing. I love all the GW women, but Saber is one of my favorite GhostWalkers, up there with Mari and Rose.
I truly enjoyed this reread. I could live in these books. They are so enjoyable and real for me. I love all the aspects of these books: fiery, beautiful romance, complex relationships between men and women, found and born families, fighting the darkness, and formidable warriors all together. Everything I love in a good fiction book. I have to wait until July to reread Murder Game, but I want to just dive in now and keep reading, so I don't have to leave the GhostWalkers behind. That's how good these books are!

***Listened to audiobook from 6/29/11-7/5/11. Here are my thoughts:***
I have to be honest and admit I didn't care for the narrator. His voice wasn't suited to the characters and Christine Feehan narrative. I think he would do a great job narrating noir/detective novels, though. With this story, he just didn't bring Jesse, Saber, and any of the other characters (except the sicko villain) to life in a pleasing manner. He actually made me want to reread the book again right away (and during) to get my own visuals of the characters back in my head, which I will probably do early next year.
Narrator aside, I enjoyed listening because I love this serious so darn much. I really enjoy spending time with the GhostWalkers, and I don't think that will ever change. Listening to this book in the early morning hours (and after long hard days) kept me awake on my long journey, and I'm thankful for that. I love turning over the conspiracies involving the GhostWalkers in my head, and hearing it adds a new layer. If I could change one thing, it would just be the narrative choice.
I am so tempted to go to the library and grab the other GhostWalker audiobooks off the shelf like the greedy junkie that I am.
Overall rating for audiobook: 4.25/5.0 stars
Original review below (I didn't change it because that would be unfair based on the audiobook version):
Another great Ghostwalkers book. This one had a more semi-normal tone. Boy and girl getting to know each other. Sort of, if you consider that girl is on the run from a secret agency who trained her to kill with her touch since she was a child, and boy is a super-soldier. It was sweet but at the same time, both Saber and Jess are two dangerous people you do not want to have as enemies. I thought that the direction that things went with Saber's ability was really cool. It reminded me of Rogue from the X-Men a little bit. She was such a likable heroine, and also really dangerous. I liked that she protected Jess and put her life at risk for him, even at times when she wasn't sure she could trust him. I liked how Jess fell in love with Saber early on and wanted to make a home for her and for her to feel comfortable enough to stay with him. He took things slow so that he didn't rush her. In that way, it was a sweet book. But when things start to escalate, this book is just as intense as the other Ghostwalkers book. It was great to see that things worked out for Jess, after reading about how he lost the use of his legs and how awful that was. It's funny how he played all sweet and harmless but you realize that he is far from that, even though he has to use a wheelchair. Again, not a guy I would want as an enemy. He is a powerful Ghostwalker with abilities that remind one of Charles Xavier and Jean Grey from the X-Men, which I thought was really cool. He's also a computer genius type as well. And he's hot. Did I mention he was a Navy SEAL? THUD! Where can I get one of him? It was nice to see Ken and Mari again, and to see that they are going well. And to see Lily give birth to the first of the second generation of Ghostwalkers. I am just as addicted as ever to this series, but since i only have one left, I am going to try to hold off on reading that one and read something else because I cannot imagine the void in my life with no Ghostwalker books to look forward to.
The 6th book in the GhostWalkers series, was a somewhat disappointing read for me. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't up to par with the previous books. It was nicer, sweeter and tamer, and I missed the fast paced and never-ending action typical of the series.
Jess Calhoun is a wheelchair-bound GhostWalker who was seriously injured in and has been working "in the background" since then. To the world, he's just a retired Navy SEAL turned songwriter and radio station owner, but he's actually still deeply connected with the GhostWalkers, investigating a possible traitor within the Government. Saber Wynter is a deadly GhostWalker - she can kill with a simple touch - who has managed to escape from Dr. Whitney, and ended up working for Jess at his radio station and living at his house (as a housekeeper/housemate and nothing else). Jess knows Saber's on the run (from an abusive husband?) and she's hiding a lot of things - being a paranoid GhostWalker, he investigated her when she showed up on his doorstep one year ago, but couldn't find anything - and she knows there's more to him than meets the eye, but neither suspects the other is a GhostWalker because they're both "shielders", therefore able to hide their psychic powers from anyone. That was an interesting premise, having Jess and Saber develop a relationship without the pull of their powers and, seemingly, without Dr. Whitney's genetic manipulation too.
When this book begins, Jess and Saber has been friends (without benefits, poor guys) for almost a year, and she's starting to feel it's time she moved on because she's become too attached to him and it isn't safe to stay in one place for so long considering the Evil Mad Dr. Whitney's on her trail. But she can't find the strength to leave Jess and she ends up lowering her "shield" accidentaly and tipping him off about the fact that she's a GhostWalker. He doesn't say anything but he starts to wonder if she's a spy planted by Dr. Whitney. At the same time, he finds out there's someone stalking his house, so he calls his GhostWalkers team for help. When Saber meets them, she realizes Jess and his friends are all GhostWalkers, and she wonders if they're Dr. Whitney's goons sent to catch her. Jess and Saber love each other, even though she's not willing to admit it, but can they trust each other? And who's the stalker? Is Dr. Whitney really behind it all?
All in all, was a satisfying read, more focused on the romance than the previous books in the series. Jess had a charming sense of humor, which is unusual when it comes to the heroes in this series, and that gave this book a "lighter" feel. But while I enjoyed reading Jess and Saber's banter and seeing how well adjusted their lives had become in the months they had been living together, I got tired of it halfway through the story. I mean, nothing important happened in the 1st 8 chapters. I was ready to start shooting bullets myself just to get some action going, LOL. Fortunately, the crazy stalker made his move before I had to resort to that, and the story picked up its pace just the way I like it. As villains go, the stalker didn't scare much and I never saw him as a real threat, probably because he wasn't "enhanced". What normal human being could face a GhostWalker and survive?
Anyway, I'm still a devoted fan of this series and will definitely read the next book, . I've been dying to read Kadan's story since his 1st appearance in , so it should be fun to see him fall in love and lose (some of) his control. ;)
Jess Calhoun is a wheelchair-bound GhostWalker who was seriously injured in a previous book. To the world, he's just a retired Navy SEAL turned songwriter and radio station owner, but he's actually still deeply connected with the GhostWalkers, investigating a possible traitor within the Government.
Saber Wynter has been running and hiding for a long time, finding in Jess a home and someone to care about. Both Jess and Saber are holding secrets from one another, but given that that they live together, and Saber works for Jess, as well as the fact that they're attracted to one another means that secrets start unfurling just as danger comes knocking on the door.
It's been years since I've read this, and I have a vague memory of reading and reading the paperback I had of this, sadly can't say my feelings have stayed the same. The book helped me escape each day, for a bit, from a never ending stream of assignment marking, but it didn't captivate me, the characters didn't have me drawn in and potently caring about what would happen to them.
This 6th book can be comfortably read as a standalone.
I am at a loss. This book is very popular with readers of this series, but it just did not work for me. I did not hate it, but the main characters were not very likable to me.
My first issue - they are living together as roommates for 10 months before this story?! Supposedly they have the mating hormone but can resist for 10 months? That is definitely not the same hormone Jack and Briony have - for sure! And why was Jesse sitting on his hands for 10 months? Dude - MAN UP!!!
Jesse - I could not figure him out. How old is he? Don't you have to be a grandpa to smoke a pipe? At times he acted like a 20 something douche, but most of the time I felt he was in his 40s-50s, at least. And everyone said he was too old for her...I think he was really in his 30s, but it was weird not to be able to get a clear picture of him.
I found Jesse to be a passive aggressive, obstinate jerk. He used the OW drama to make the heroine jealous. It was childish behavior. Every time he was amused by it, I wanted to slap him. Granted, the first OW was nothing (a business contact) and the second (his ex fiancé) he did not want to see. But the lipstick thing - I moved from slapping to wanting to kick him in the balls. I would have totally walked out on this guy long before, but if he played that game with me? Totally would have given him the finger and left as fast as I could.
He did not listen to Saber, never believed her and was selfish in what he required of her. Even at the very end. I just never developed any affection for Jesse.
Saber - I felt so horrible for how she grew up. It was seriously BAD. But she was annoyingly immature. Cue - stomping her foot and whining "Jesseeeee". Maybe the narrator made her more annoying than I would have read her. But either way, her immaturity was at least explained by her history. She was also terrified. Understandably. But why did she never leave Jesse? It made no sense. So many times she was ready to walk out, and SHOULD HAVE! After a time, I was cheering for her to. I really thought she needed to. Jesse needed a wake up call on his behavior. But no, she was weak and apparently Jesse has a magic preen. I felt bad for her because she is in a very bad position with the GhostWalkers and Jesse is blind to it.
Overall, I do not feel good about their relationship. She will always be at a disadvantage and he does not put her above all others. He might have thought he "could" but his actions are consistently him putting himself and others before her.
Safety Gang
Personal note - my childhood (male) dog was named Saber. I had a hard time with a female heroine of the same name! I do not think it colored my review, but it was really strange.
Predatory Game is the Ghostwalker story of Jess Calhoun and Saber Wynter.
I really did not like this book. At all.
The last two books in the Ghostwalker series were filled with action! Countries, battles, interesting backgrounds. Predatory Game takes place in a home. A regular ole town. There really isn’t anything spectacular about this book.
It’s like riding some super totally rockin awesome roller coaster and then riding the toddler kiddie rides. It just doesn’t work.
Physically and psychically enhanced soldiers are paired with females by pheromones that leave both the male and female unable to resist the explosive attraction. Usually the books in this series are amazing! This one has failed miserably in the rock on! department.
Jess was injured in a previous book. He does not have the use of his legs below his knees. He still works with the team, but his brilliance is best used on intel and research. A sexy man in a wheelchair.
Saber is one of Whitney’s experiments with some pretty intriguing psychic abilities. She showed up on Jess door hoping to fill the employment ad he placed in the newspaper.
Basically, two Ghostwalkers, two shielders living together for almost a year without detecting the other’s abilities. Of course, being paired, they suffer through the mutual attraction and sexual pull.
This book is extremely bleh. I only recommend it to those reading this series. And even then, just stick through it if you can. The next books get better.
Moderate to juicy violence. Moderate sexual content. Just all around blahness.
WOWZA !!!! I love Christine Feehan's Ghostwalker Series!!!
This 6th book tells the story of Jesse Calhoun and Saber Wynter and I.LOVED.IT!! New and exciting things happened, new information is revealed, we learned more concerning Peter Whitney and his ongoing manipulations of the Ghostwalkers; a baby is born, healing is performed and a move is made. Whew...all in one book! We are introduced to new characters and updated on many of our former heroes and heroines. Another emotional, hot, hot, steamy romance with a hero and heroine I love and a story that kept me on the edge and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough!!! Another keeper!
We first met Jesse Calhoun in Mind Game and see him again in Night Game. He is a top secret security weapon, deadly and dangerous to his enemies. He has made his home in Sheridan, Wyoming. A tall, handsome virile alpha male with bronze skin, wide, broad shoulders, a hard muscled body, dark hair and incredible melting black eyes*sigh*! Super intelligent, this “dragon king won my heart:)
And our heroine Saber Wynter is perfect for Jesse. She too is a Ghostwalker, on the run. Her story is unique and one that pulled on my heartstrings. I was amazed at her own special ability. Not knowing her real name, not even her birthday, I so very much wanted Saber to find her place in the world.
While this book is somewhat different than the others, I loved it!
Ms. Feehan’s heroes/heroines are some of my favorites and her talent amazes me. I am never disappointed!
We get more on Jesse Calhoun in this one, and what he's been dealing with. As it's a continuation of the series, Feehan doesn't touch on a lot of the past. This one starts out different, and I think I liked it. It wasn't one of the GhostWalkers out looking for one of the women or out on a mission. It starts right in Jess's home. He'd met Saber, who answered a job ad, and has been his roommate for several months already. You get to feel how they interact right from the beginning. It's obvious that they are attracted to each other, and I liked how it had been almost a year before they even try something.
Saber may be on the small side, but she can pack a punch. Trained, she hates her abilites until she learns how to use them for good instead of evil. She has a head on her shoulders, but is finding it very hard to trust anyone. With her past, I don't blame her.
As a continuation in the series, if you plan on reading this, don't start with this book. You'll get lost right from the get-go. Feehan touches base on the past, but not enough to understand why the characters are going through what they're going through, not to mention why the secondary characters are, what they've done and why they are the way they are. Please, start from the beginning.
Great action scenes, great love scenes. Lot's of descriptions in each category, LOL! You get the feel for everything; from Jess's house, the radio station, the characters inner battles, combat of every form. Excellent!
Ms. Feehan may be the "reigning queen of paranormal romance," but she's also the queen of the run-on sentence. ;-)She certainly has her own writing style: a lot of character emotion, lengthy dialogue, the tendency to reiterate.
With all that, I still enjoyed this book. There were some slow parts, but the end was full of action. Finally, seeing some headway in the Dr. Whitney issue. This was the first time--that I can remember--the girls from the orphanages having flower OR seasonal names. In the past, it was only flower names.
Ms. Feehan set this book up in a way to branch into the "other side" of the ghostwalkers and that's all I can say about that without posting a spoiler alert.
Finally, this is not a book to pick up to begin the series. Need to go back and read the series in order or at least the previous books because they tended to recap what the ghostwalkers were, Dr. Whitney, and how it all came about. This book did not go too much into what led up to this point.
Because I enjoyed the book 4 1/2 stars from This Reader. Very entertaining.
I really loved this book! It had everything in it. Although it wasn't as dark as the previous book, the tone of this book was more suspenseful and maybe even creepier because there was a lot of mystery in this one, especially as the reader was positioned to have the desire to know who the
Jesse melted my heart. We met Jesse in the second book and learnt the consequences he'd had to deal with after he was captured by the enemy. I loved how we got to see his struggle and his feelings of helplessness because it made me feel more connected to him. Regardless of the situation he's in, he's every bit as lethal and dangerous as the other GW's. He's every bit of an alpha male. He may be deadly and completely capable, he's so incredibly sweet, tender and sexy towards Saber. Jesse made me swoon
Saber... She has an awesome name and I really liked her as a heroine. She may have been a resistant or uncertain for a lot of the book but I can't blame her for that. Not with her childhood and the types of things she was forced to endure at such a young age. She's a killing machine, not doubt about that. But she doesn't want to be. She doesn't like death, she feels remorse, she feels. It's one of the reasons I really enjoyed getting to know her. You can't help but fall in love with her when you realise she's still a person who craves to have a family, somewhere to belong and somewhere where she is accepted regardless of how incredibly powerful she is.
This book had it all. Sweet scenes. Action packed scenes. Dramatic scenes. Mystery which kept us guessing. Steamy, hot scenes, like the bathtub scene and the scene in the rain... UNF.
I cannot wait for Kadan's story! I've been waiting for his book as soon as I finished reading the first book in this series.
Predatory Game is book 6 in Christine Feehan's GhostWalker series. In this installment, Saber Wynter is fleeing from Dr. Peter Whitney and his sick experiments when she runs right into the arms ex-Navy SEAL and GhostWalker Jess Calhoun. As they live together, Saber and Jess discover each other's secrets, while staying a step ahead of the soldiers trying to reacquire them for Dr. Whitney's breeding program.
Predatory Game is paranormal romantic suspense at its best. The tension is tight throughout the story, and the action sequence at the end is (forgive the pun) explosive! The main characters, Jess and Saber, are well-developed and strong, and are some of the most deadly GhostWalkers I've seen. As always, Feehan brings back some of her "old reliable" characters from previous books - Lily and Ryland, Ken and Mari, and Logan - along with some new faces for future books.
An intriguing mixture of romance and science kept me reading and interested long after I put it down. As the doctor toys with his subjects from afar, the Whitney conspiracy is beginning to accelerate a bit, leaving the reader unsure of friends and foes. Predatory Game was a really satisfying read, and I was extremely happy with the outcome. Of all the GhostWalker books I've read, I have to say, Predatory Game is the most interesting. The storyline and characters captured me like no other book in the series has. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book!
This is a wonderful continuation of the Game Series by Christine Feehan.
This is the story of Jesse Calhoun, a Ghostwalker, who was severly injured in the second book, Mind Games. He is a Navy SEAL who has had to leave the teams because he can no longer walk. Saber Wynter, a woman that Dr. Whitney Sr. had experimented on when she was child, moves into his life, neither realizes what the other is.
But there is a loose cannon out for Saber, someone that Dr. Whitney can't keep under control, he is very sexually interested in her and leaving a trail of hookers bodies as he watches her.
Did Dr. Whitney put them together to save them?? Or to see if his phermone enhancements had worked and get another child for the next generation? And will the two of them be able to overcome the distrust of the phermone enhancments to trust the feelings of love that have developed between them over the months that she has lived there? And will Jesse be able to use his legs again? Will the bonics that Dr. Whitney developed and that Jesse decided to use be made to work?
Wonderfully detailed and ploted out romance with just enough of everything else to make this story interesing. Loved it.
This is a good series. Not one of the bests IMHO. I know many liked it and I just don't understand why I just cannot connect with it. Even though I gave 4 stars to some books in in this series I still feel it's too much for it, not because it's bad, just because it is not what I like to read. None of the books in this series was able to grab my attention seriously, with all of them I had to stop for for a while. I never could read a book without stopping once or even more times.
Still, this one was one of the bests definitely. Really liked it. It's just that I wont rush to pick up the next. It feels more like I keep reading it just because I already started and I can't not finish a series I already started.
This book was really good don't let the 3 stars fool you. For me it was the narrator that killed it for me. But I enjoyed the story so much I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. I will def be reading more from this series and author, however I will read them myself next time :)
Christine Feehan knows how to deliver an action packed story. I really enjoy that about her writing. And her world building is this series blows me away.
I truly enjoyed Jesse's story. It was refreshing after the gritty tales of the Norton twins. I liked that this novel was really about Jesse and Saber falling in love. Feehan's at a point in the series where it's in transition and that can often kill the romance, but not in Predatory Game. I got everything I've come to expect of this series: fast paced plot, aching romance and the advancement of the overall story arc. Jesse is a great character, not my favourite of the series, but I like him a lot. Dangerous but cool as a still pool of water and with a wicked good sense of humour. Stubborn, but not unyielding. Proud, but never so much that he comes off as a jerk. And I love that he is so much in love with Saber he'd walk away from the military if she'd asked. As for Saber, I loved that's physically small but can kick some serious butt. Her enhanced ability, to feel someone's biorhythm was also extremely cool. That's the good in this book.
The bad? Not much. I wish a bit more of the story arc had been developed, but I'm so happy the series has returned to its head over heels romance feel that I can't bring myself to really complain about it. The only other thing that kind of stood out and bugged me was the repetition of our heroine: she's not quite willing to believe in her man and their love. All the women in this series are plagued with this irksome flaw I find, to one degree or another. I'd really like Feehan to flip that and make the man the sceptic next time. It was refreshing when Ryland was the believer back in Shadow Game, now it's just "oh boy, here we go again." Don't get me wrong Saber is great, I love how sensitive and caring she is and I appreciate her concerns, especially given all she's been through as a child. I'd just like to see one of the women in this series willing to put it on the line for love without needing the man to profess his love for her over and over and over again.
Favourite quote from the novel:
"It lasted an eternity, forever, it lasted a heartbeat, a moment."
This was a hot one. So far all the books in the Ghostwalker series have been sizzling with incredibly virile, alpha males but not all couples have had great chemistry. Jess and Saber, however, are like an enzyme reaction...bubbling, sizzling, and setting each other off. The story both illuminates and complicates the on-going Ghostwalker narrative. These stories are complex with unfolding political intrigue, employing genetic manipulation, and finding the will and the way to live a normal life. It's enough to drive the loyal fan crazy and keep us totally hooked. Ahhh, it is so good.
What I really love about this series is the balance between the Ghostwalker enhanced soldiers and their female counterparts. The women are also enhanced and have special skills. Skills that are oftentimes more dangerous then the men's. There is parity in the relationship that I really enjoy. This is especially so in this book. Saber has an extraordinary skill that puts people on edge. Her touch is literally lethal and what that does to a person's psyche is immeasurable. Jess is the only one who can provide her with peace and calm. But because of their history, training, and enhancements, they cannot live a "normal" life. The life and legacy of Dr. Peter Whitney continues to dog them and all the other Ghostwalkers. The tension is high and the story is tightly written. I loved it and cannot wait for the next installment.
IN A NUTSHELL:
This is a fantastic addition to the series. Don't bother trying to read this without starting this series from the beginning, but I promise you will not be disappointed if you do.
Saber and Jess are a great story. Neither realize who the other is and they're history with Whitney. Saber's on the run, but getting a job at Jess' radio station gave them the time to get to know each other. They're friends now, but everything's coming to a head and their secrets aren't going to remain in the dark for long.
Everything just gets more and more complicated in the land of the evil doctor Whitney. I really enjoyed Saber and Jess' relationship as they figured out how they both felt. Their secrets were always going to have to come out, but Saber has great reason to distrust everyone. Both of them struggle to trust, but the draw between them is unmistakable. There's not a ton of big reveals in this one, but more little hints of things towards the future. It's becoming more and more obvious that the danger comes far up the food chain and has every Ghostwalker in danger. They're pulling together and learning to work together to find out what's really going on.
I love this series. I can't wait to find out more.
Saber Wynter was an orphan, whisked away by the US military and genetically enhanced. She was tortured and forced to the bidding of scientists. She escaped, a trained, deadly weapon, to the coast of beautiful northern California.
Jesse Calhoun is a Ghostwalker. A military experiment gone wrong.
When Saber answers a job posting from Jesse to be a radio announcer the two mis-matched, yet oddly similar, killers strike up a friendship that leads to something more passionate.
But neither knows the covert background of the other until the evil scientists come to retrieve their star possession- Saber.
This book is different from the other Game/Ghostwalker books in that it is primarily focused on the couple's romance. There are still exciting elements to the book, still a lot of action, but there's no doubt that this was written to be a romance.
I continue to enjoy the March to Confront Peter Whitney. In this installment, we meet radio deejays Jess Calhoun and his employee Saber Wynter. Why they didn't know the other was a Ghostwalker...I'm not sure. I'm not buying that shield crap. Nonetheless they had a great story as Jess was trying to walk again after finding an experimental bionics surgery with Lily Whitney helping him.
I really like the women in this series. They are not weak or simpering females. They are trained assassins and they hold their own in each story. I look forward to book 7
My favorite book of the Ghostwalker series. It satisfied me the most in a sense that Saber & Jesse appealed to my idea of an ideal relationship. Compromise, sacrifice, humor, friendship and the side order of romanticism, chivalry, sweetness and 'bad-assery'. I'll never get tired of re-reading this book, and I can't wait to read more of the SEALS of the Ghostwalkers. The Nortons & Jesse definitely show they're up to any task.
I found this book tedious. But once I start, I rarely stop, even if it takes me ages to finish. The first problem was mine. This book does not stand alone. It is part of a series and you need to understand where everyone is coming from in order to understand the level of emotion and distrust that so many of the characters have. Also this this is a very-Alpha-male story, although Saber can take care of herself quite well and does so on numerous occasions. I am less interested in very-Alpha-males than I was when I was a lot younger. I don't see them as romantic, I see them as controlling. The reader was Tom Stechschulte. I usually love male readers of romance and Stechschulte was quite good but there was so much repetitive sex that it got boring. There was also a lot of violence. Very graphic violence and very graphic sex. I didn't like the violence and the sex stopped moving the plot forward after awhile. There were some nifty things as the booked neared the end. Some of the climactic fighting was very written and the bad guys were clearly bad. But ultimately, I felt like I had dropped in midway into something and spent a lot of time trying to understand the relationship because going with the flow didn't make a lot of sense, which would have been different if I had read the series. However, I don't have enough of an interest to do so.
She's all sassy and spunky and has one big secret from the "nice guy" she works for at a radio station and as a house cleaning person. He's a GhostWalker recovering from a gruesome attack totally yummy. The two of them are equally talented and they bit by bit learn to work together. I did have to keep track of all the names but it was a fast paced read. The sex was intimate and sexy not overwritten. The story moved very fast with really good shootouts and fights. Yes, these lovers were hot!
It was solid. I flew through this book and couldn't fault it for that. It's funny I thought this series would be my least favorite because I find myself picky about genetically enhanced characters but it's pretty great 👍 I like the science and how this seems almost believable ( stretching it think worn out elastic)
Predatory Game, book 6 of the Ghostwalkers series, by Christine Feehan @authorcfeehan. So excited to reread this series! 🤩
This was such a good a book about Saber & Jesse! Tropes: MF, PNR, Disabled MMC, Secretly Enhanced & Experimented on, Fated Mates due to experiments, Military MCs & Found Extended Family.
“Predatory Game is book 6 in Christine Feehan’s Ghostwalker series. And here we continue with our trend of Ghostwalker SEALs with Jesse Calhoun. You may remember Jesse as Dahlia’s NCIS handler in . He was beaten within an inch of his life trying to protect his team-mate and his legs were destroyed below the knee. Since we saw him last, it’s been mentioned that he is back to working with his old team, but is doing so from a wheelchair.
Jesse is living in Wyoming. Though he still consults with the Ghostwalkers (physically and psychically enhanced soldiers), he is now also a songwriter and owns a radio station. Living in his home, is the mysterious Saber Wynter. Saber works as a DJ at Jesse’s radio station. And since she began renting a room in his home, they have become very close friends. Actually, both have feelings beyond friendship, but they have never acted on those feelings. Each is trying to hide the fact that s/he is enhanced. Saber was also part of the Ghostwalker project; only she had been taken as a young child by mad-scientist Peter Whitney and trained as an assassin. She made her first kill at age 9. But she escaped last year and is now in hiding.
But now Saber is being stalked. The man works for Whitney but has gone off the deep-end. He’s obsessed with Saber and wants her for his own. Jesse and Saber continue to grow closer and eventually reveal themselves to each other. They realize that Dr Whitney wants them to get together, to create a super-baby who has powers from both parents. While their relationship develops and they fight the growing danger to Saber, they must also contend with Jesse’s disability and bionics he is trying to master, so that he can walk again.
I really enjoyed this one. (I have a soft spot for the SEAL guys, it seems.) It’s different in that our couple actually had a chance to get to know each other and develop believable feelings –as opposed to previous books where the couples were “in love in a matter of days. Saber is undoubtably the most lethal Ghostwalker yet, but she is understandably vulnerable after all she has endured. Meanwhile, Jesse is strong emotionally, while he struggles with the limitations his body is dealing with. The love scenes are solid, though not quite as super-hot as in the last two books.
