In a possible far future animals have taken over and democratized the world where humans once ruled. Tim, a lonely slime mold, is worried about his human pet Mimi and her recent animal urges. He only wants her to be happy, but he doesn’t know how to keep her from sneaking out and cavorting with the human pet next door or any number of feral humans in the neighborhood. This story makes me so very happy. I love stories that offer up a fresh perspective on the world, a glimpse of the world through someone else's eyes. You don't normally envision slime-molds as having eyes, but apparently evolution takes care of that in the far-distant future.

In fact, evolution changes a great many things, including the position of humans in the food chain. Oh, and also the abolition of said food chain.

The animals, and other biological entities, have taken over the planet and are ruling with great wisdom and benevolence. They've removed sex from the equation of life in favour of a universal cloning program. Humans are kept as pets, their sexual instincts intact. You know how embarrassing it can be when your pet starts humping the neighbour's leg, or their favourite toy, or pretty much anything? We don't like to see our pets as sexual creatures, by and large.
Well, I don't, but apparently some people invent sex toys for them..

Yeah..... so there's that. But there's also more than that. Morrissette's story has great heart and humour in addition to being seriously thought-provoking. The best part for me is that there are unique perspectives to be found in every paragraph, almost every sentence. I love it.

The story is here on Tor.com:

There's weird, and then there's just plain ridiculous. Slime mould has never been, and will never be, more intelligent than us. In a million years from now, it'll still be just a dumb ol' bucket o' slime.

Fascinating but weird little story, and I had to laugh at one commenter who said it wasn't original. Because clearly, stories featuring sentient slime-molds and their pet humans are the trend, right? It's pretty original, with some fascinating looks at pet ownership among other things, with a slight predictable twist that didn't bother me because the story itself is so rich in world-building. Worth reading, which you can find for free on Tor.com:

Don't let the title scare or fool you.

Micaela Morrissette's story in was not just one of the best stories of the volume but a truly exceptional piece of writing. It seems the Porn and Revolution is the only thing she's published outside of a few short stories, so I picked it up right away. And if you're thinking about it too, you should definitely go for it. It's $0.99 on Amazon and takes under an hour to read, and it's more than worth it. This book is an utter delight. Seriously, just go read it. It's brilliant, funny, morose, vulgar, imaginative, grotesque, and just absurdly well-written.

I've never read anything quite like it and am more than ever looking forward to whatever else of Morrissette's I can find, she's knocking it out of the park in every way here.

"We may talk about humans as if they're animals like the rest of us, but if we're honest we have to admit that they're a completely different organism. We bring them into our homes and treat them as if they're domesticated, but they're an uncivilized species and always will be."

This is free, read it

It started out as a really interesting thing but then it got weirder and weirder and weirder. And weirder.

When everything can be accomplished with the just touch of a button, or a couple of strokes on a keyboard, what's left for humanity? What direction is left for us to grow? Trapped by our own ingenuity, are we stuck standing still?

Morissette, painting a world where humans have long been surpassed by a new upper echelon of sentient creatures, might have us think so. We're left to question if we can still call ourselves gods of the animal kingdom, or if we have become nothing but statues. Monuments to an era gone by.

In other words, what would the world be like if a slimemold could work at Walmart?

Weird & wonderful. Exactly what I needed. Never thought I would find myself reading about human-on-slimemold action, but here we are. I'm almost ashamed to say I found it intriguing. Honestly, this was just a fantastic piece, easily one of the best novellas I've read in a while, and I would recommend to all.

Porn & Revolution in the Peaceable Kingdom is for people who...

...are not scared off by the title of "Porn & Revolution"
...like when books flip reality on you; humans as pets whaaat?
...love a little revolution
...or sex (feral, dirty sex)
...have ever wondered about animals and their devious plans
...enjoy stories that are just a little odd

Porn & Revolution in the Peaceable Kingdom was a free story I read on Tor.com on September 9, 2013 for the Why Buy the Cow? reading challenge. I read it for the title. Like this surprises you?

What is not to love about this story? I started scanning the opening paragraph and the next thing I knew, a very enjoyable hour had passed and I'd varied between almost squicking in communicability and laughing out loud. Certainly not a new concept--where humans are now considered "pets" but this story certainly highlights our attitudes in a light-hearted yet somehow poignant way. Exquisite, beautiful prose. I'm certainly adding Morrissette to my TBR list.

Weird, in a good way, and very imaginative. Evolution will never look the same again, will it?

Interesting ideas, for sure, and what a twist ending. Slightly discomforting, but that's what good sci-fi does, right?

I read this novelette on the Tor.com site and absolutely loved it. The ending was fantastic and the story was so well written. The title definitely caught my eye and the text did not disappoint.

Another Tor.com short story

Trigger warning for violent sex and inter-species rape.

Ugh. That is all.

Interesting read. Can't say I liked it or disliked it. There were parts of the story that really made one think but others were difficult to read. Interesting read.

A story set in a future where animals and other beings, like slime molds, acquire intelligence. In this world slime molds and similar creatures become dominant and humans are pets. A slime mold falls in love with its human pet and then becomes jealous.

This plot line looks like it has the potential to either be really funny or really weird. Doesn't it? But the author delivers the soap opera so straight that the story ends up from differing very little from every other daytime showing of a soap opera. That's a problem. Change the details of who its between, but keep everything else and tell it in soap opera fashion, what are you left with? A weird soap opera, with emphasis on the soap, and only incidentally weird in the details. It was okay, but a bit of a chore to get through even though it's only short novella length.

Up until the end I was thrilled with this SUPER WEIRD story about a lonely slime mold and his horny pet human. In the future, humans stopped evolving but not Animals. Animals though have become very human-like. Bars, dating apps, effing Wal-Mart!
I was giddy with the strangeness. I love weird shit. But this does not stick the landing. At all.
