Behind Every Good Man

Rate this book
A wronged wife goes toe to toe with her cheating husband at the polls in this hilarious and uplifting novel.

It’s a doozy of a bad day for Beverly Diamond when she catches her husband, Larry, in a compromising position with his secretary. What’s a suburban wife to do with a soon-to-be ex, two young kids, and no degree or financial support in 1962? Beat the louse at his own game, that’s what.

Larry runs the Maryland senatorial campaign for the incumbent candidate projected to win against his younger underdog opponent, Michael Landau. Beverly has the pluck, political savvy, and sheer drive to push Michael’s campaign in a successful new direction, even if he already has a campaign manager who's less than pleased she's inserted herself into the race. If Bev can persuade Michael to modernize, pay attention to women’s issues, and learn to dress himself properly, maybe she can show Larry how much he's underestimated her—and make her own dreams come true in the process.

This book is an absolute treasure! Seriously, I couldn’t stop smiling, then feeling all the emotions, then smiling and giggling again. Beverly comes in and totally takes charge, turning this story into something truly special! And let’s not forget about the mom—her dry, quirky humor adds that perfect touch of lightness to everything. The story really gets how a woman’s mind works and shows that you can accomplish anything if you set your mind to it! Trust me, you’ve got to read it to really appreciate it!

Behind Every Good Man, is an even better Woman. (The secret to his success)

It’s 1962 and Beverly Diamond has decided to deliver fresh baked cookies 🍪 to her husband Larry at his office! But, when she opens his door- the surprise is on her! Larry has his pants around his ankles and his secretary is providing more than dictation. Oops!

What a cliché!

Larry may run the Maryland senatorial campaign for the incumbent candidate, Sam Gibson, but Beverly’s father had been a popular Congressman until he retired two years ago, so she grew up in the Political World.

And, she has some ideas of how his younger, underdog opponent can win.

So, she asks her Mom, Millie (a scene stealer!) to watch her two young children-planting them in front of the 📺 where “Captain Kangaroo will keep them occupied, and sets out to get herself a job as the campaign manager for the opposition-Michael Landau.

REVENGE is a dish best served cold, but Beverly might just serve hers in a Corning Ware Cornflower casserole dish!

May the best man or WOMAN win!!

This FEEL-GOOD historical fiction read, is full of humor and 60’s nostalgia!

Though I have had my fill of today’s Politics, this was one candidate I could easily cast my vote for! 🗳

Be sure to read the AUTHORS NOTE at the end of the book to learn who the REAL WOMEN were who inspired this story!

AVAILABLE NOW!!

A buddy read with DeAnn so be sure to watch for her review!

Thank You to Lake Union Publishing for the gifted ARC provided through NetGalley. These are my candid thoughts!

It’s 1962 and Beverly Diamond is a perfect wife to Larry and a perfect mother to Robbie and Debbie. Then Larry blows it (sorry!). Will Beverly continue to be the dutiful wife or walk away? Whatever happens next, mousey Bev Diamond is gone and a new woman emerges from the chrysalis. Larry will live to regret this, he’s worse than an eejit but Beverly certainly isn’t, she’s way smarter. Game on.

It’s pretty obvious from the five star rating that I love this book. I love the historical context of the 1960s, the situation for women, for other marginalised groups and where the powers lies is clear to see with emphasis on lies. I really enjoy the politics angle as much of this concerns the campaign for senator for Maryland. Beverly goes to work for Michael Landau who is running for the senator against Sam Gibson the current incumbent who Larry works for. This should be interesting and it is. Michael Landau is a terrific character and his progressive views for 1962 make him a very likeable character. Stuart his campaign manager is a great foil for Michael, he’s a curmudgeon but maybe he’ll grow on us? This is where Beverley comes into her own and I love the new independent woman that emerges. The female characters are strong women - if you haven’t read this yet, wait til you meet Bev’s mother!! Tour de force and then some - so entertaining. As for Larry, the less said the better.

One of the reasons I enjoy this so much is because it’s an excellent combination of a number of themes all wrapped up in wit and humour. We have the fascinating historical background of the Kennedy years, although American politics is a mystery to me at times, I find the senatorial race so interesting and it’s a time of the beginning of change which Bev signifies. There are some lovely lighter moments often courtesy of Bev’s children or her mother.

It’s a great time to set the novel as the world holds its breath, who will blink first? Kennedy or Khrushchev, Beverly or Larry? I bet on Larry being the first blinker as Bev is resolute and you know what they say about a woman scorned. I’ll definitely read more by this author as I really enjoy the way she writes.

I had so much fun reading this. Beverly is one of the best female characters I have come across in a while. Actually, I can't say who I loved more, her or her mother. I love reading about such strong female characters who are both smart and funny. Their relationship is perfect.

The side characters are pretty great, too. I loved Bev's relationship with her dad, the dynamic between Bev and Michael, her feisty best friend Nancy, and probably my favourite grumpy Stuart. Loved the banter between him and Bev.

The story is set in 1962 and I really enjoyed the historical and political aspect of it, the Jewish representation, the humor, a bit of romance, and how the life of women was explored when it comes to marriage, parenting and career.

4.5 Stars Rounded Up.

This was perfect for my tastes at the moment. I loved reading about a wronged wife taking charge and re-assembling her life gone astray after discovering that her husband was cheating on her.

Married to a philandering spouse who turns out to be one of the most obnoxious characters, Bev not only bounces back, but excels in one-upmanship. While I sympathise with those choosing to salvage their marriages, I'm drawn to those spirited women who embark on the unknown.

On the surface, this may appear to be a simplistic story about a wronged wife getting even with her cheating husband. However, it's more complex as a period piece taking place in 1962 when Kennedy was president. Issues for women such as voting, restricted property rights and the more subtle domestic decision making between husbands and wives are seemlessly woven in reflecting a not so distant era.

As a new author to me, I'll keep an eye out for Sara Goodman Confino's other works.

When Beverly Diamond catches her husband in a compromising situation with his secretary, she kicks him to the curb. When he threatens to take away the home she shares with their kids, she decides to get even - by helping the senate candidate her husband is leading a campaign against. As these two new rivals go toe-to-toe, sparks between her and her new employer begin to fly as well.

I enjoyed every minute of this really unique genre mashup. With elements of historical fiction, women’s fiction, romance, and politics, there is something here for literally everyone.

From the moment Beverly catches her husband Larry cheating on her, I knew the fireworks were coming. She is an incredibly strong FMC and watching her step up and take control of her own destiny was what made this story so powerful. While it isn’t specifically a romance, I loved watching the relationship between our MCs begin to take form and shape. Their arc flowed so effortlessly off of the overall storyline.

And one of my favorite aspects - getting a behind the scenes tour of what it is like to run such an important campaign. And while this is set in the 1960’s, it still feels so timely.

🎧 I read this one primarily with my ears and could not have loved Helen Laser’s narration more. She brought heroine Beverly Diamond to life in such a humorous, vivacious way. I always love Confino’s audiobooks, but this may be my favorite.

I can ALWAYS count on Sara for pulling me out of my reading slumps.

After catching her husband with his secretary, Beverly does the ultimate act of revenge. She signs up to help Michael Landau’s senatorial campaign. Having lived a life in the shadows of men in politics, Beverly uses her knowledge, wit and determination to lead Michael’s campaign in a new direction that will hopefully be enough to beat the opponent who’s team is run by her ex.

I impatiently wait all year to get my hands on the next Sara Confino book and once again she wrote a flawless women’s fiction and historical fiction blend (with the perfect amount of romance). Beverly was a strong and likable FMC and keeping consistent with her other books, her mother Millie made such an awesome sidekick. They were both well ahead of their time and an inspiration to anyone who has even felt underestimated or like the underdog. Even if you don’t love politics in books, I would give this one a try. It is more about how women can empower and influence men’s decisions than about specific political issues. With strong Jewish representation, laugh out loud humor, a glimpse into women’s live in the 60s, and a wonderful full cast of characters, this is one not to miss! Plus, get ready the Marilyn/ Ava cameos!

Read if you like:
-Female empowerment
-1960s DC setting
-Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
-Jewish rep
-Women’s fiction/ historical fiction blends

What a fantastic book!

There’s so much I could say about it, but what really matters is this: I LOVED it! I loved it so much that I went out and bought a physical copy—the first book I’ve purchased in six months.

The writing, the characters, the story—all of it was amazing. Set in Washington, D.C. in 1962, against the backdrop of political campaigns, the setting itself was fascinating and wonderfully explored. The heroine was an absolute standout—admirable, smart, capable, and resourceful, with an impressive mastery of the ins and outs of a political campaign. The revenge campaigning? Utterly satisfying!

And let’s not forget the slow-burn chemistry between the main characters, which was just the icing on the cake.

All in all, this was a truly wonderful and deeply satisfying read from start to finish. Highly recommended!

Loved! Loved! Loved! It was wonderful! It was different! It was everything I never expected to adore! This book landed on the rarely visited cross section of Unputdownable and Never Wanted It To End.

In 1962 a wronged Maryland housewife seeks revenge on her husband by campaigning for a rival senatorial candidate. But wait! There’s more! It’s multilayered with charismatic characters (I dare you to love only one plot thread and limit your affection to only two characters).

While it shined a light on the times, it subtly invited comparisons to the present. Sadly, we may not be living up to the Camelot Beverly Diamond envisioned.

My thanks to Chantal for her 5 star review of this book.

Not a fan of nearly faceless characters and communicating emotions through expressive shoulders. Still, I’ll read anything Confino writes.

Beverly Diamond is a suburban D.C. wife who finds herself in the middle of a heated senatorial race in Sara Goodman Confino’s latest novel that delivers the perfect mix of humor, heart, and female empowerment.

Beverly’s marriage comes crashing down after walking in on her husband, Larry, having an affair with his secretary. Larry runs the senatorial campaign for Maryland incumbent Sam Gibson, a role he surely wouldn’t have without Beverly’s steadfast support on the domestic front and her father’s political connections. What nerve. It’s no wonder Beverly decides the best new career move for her as a divorcée would be to become the campaign manager for Sam’s younger, progressive (and much more handsome) opponent, Michael Landau.

Things won’t be easy, however. Although Michael recognizes Beverly’s political savvy, his existing campaign manager is less than thrilled about a woman trying to take his job. From his wardrobe to the same stale speech he’s been using all over town, Michael needs a makeover in more ways than one. Beverly has her work cut out for her and things get much more dicey once Larry catches wind of her new gig.

It’s also 1962, a year marked by significant events in American politics and culture, including the civil rights movement. Women are increasingly concerned with securing a stronger role in American society beyond their domestic responsibilities. If Beverly can get Michael to put these progressive issues to the forefront of his campaign, she knows they have a real chance to beat Sam (and Larry). Although Michael shares Beverly’s interest in civil rights, he isn’t so convinced women are concerned with politics enough to show up to the polls. It will be up to Beverly to show him that women are more than ready to have a seat at the table.

I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. It’s an especially fun read for readers of Don’t Forget to Write who will be delighted by a few cameos. Goodman Confino’s gift for writing powerful historical fiction with strong FMCs who are full of humor and moxie are sure to capture your full attention.

Wasn't that just fabulous and SO MUCH FUN! For those of you who aren't sick yet of me saying this, or who have not yet received a book in the mail from me, let me introduce you to my new favorite author, Sara Goodman Corfino. This is the third book I have read of hers and they have all been five star reads for me. I laugh at loud at times, I am moved, I just love the Jewish Historical Fiction setting, and all the characters feel like my relatives and community. There is something about these characters that warms my soul and makes me laugh to my toes! Certain scenes, well had they been in this day and age, they would have been recorded and it would have went viral. And the dialogue, is not to be beaten.

Its 1962, in Maryland. Beverly Anne Gelman Diamond, daughter of former Senator Bernie Gelman, is married to Larry, and mother to two adorable young kids. It is 1962 and her husband works for the current Senator, as his campaign re-election, and it is coming up to election time. Beverly finds her husband el flagrante, in a compromising position, and she knows that even though it will kill her mother and her social standing, she cannot stay married to him. She joins the virtually non-existent election campaign of the dashing young Michael, and the hijinx starts from there! The novel is hilarious, and warm, and inspiring, and isn't it nice when there is a politician you can believe in and root for. Michael typifies what politics should be. Representing everyone, and a service from one'ws values and ethics. Michael is the opposite of his opponent. And his campaign is not even off the ground, it is already lost.... No chance at all, until Beverly walks through the door and starts taking charge. This novel is wonderful!!!!! I loved every second of listening to this and I am sorry its over.

If you loved Don't Forget to Write (which I did - Adored!) keep your eyes out for some of those characters to re-appear. I was delighted when certain people from 1962 in that first book somehow made their way towards Washington. It was so perfectly fitting! Prepare to love it! Everything about it!

I am obsessed with Behind Every Good Man. It's one of my top reads of 2024 so far. It's sharp, captivating, and funny. Although it's historical fiction set in the 1960s, it's timely and relevant, especially in this election year, when women still have to fight for equality and representation. The book is so relevant that it even has a 'tampons in the bathroom" joke. :-)

The main heroine, Beverly, is intelligent and competent; she knows her worth and is not intimidated by men. She is the type of FMC that I love to read about. I also loved Beverly's mother, Millie. She cracked me up. And Beverly's love interest, Michael, is delightful.

I found the writing style very engaging. I was so engrossed in the story I read it in one day. As soon as I finished reading it, I downloaded Confino's previous novel. I cannot recommend Behind Every Good Man enough, especially for readers looking for historical fiction with feminist themes and a great romance.

What a beautiful story full of character growth, heart, and love. Behind Every Good Man will grab you and pull you into politics, 50s in DC and a world of dynamic female characters who go against the norms of a controlling society and gave me Marvelous Mrs. Maisel vibes.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆?

This book absolutely had all the emotions. I was laughing, scolding characters, cheering, wanting to strangle characters and I could not get enough…Especially when it came to Bev’s character. She was the life blood of the story and a total bad ass!

I really appreciated how this book addressed the prejudices and controlling mindset of a very male dominated world during the 50s and yet there was a new generation of women standing up and pushing back so they could be their own independent person.

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲:

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸?

Helen Laser truly brought this story to life with her narration.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲?

I absolutely binged this fast paced story. The fun banter between several characters also had me fully engaged and giggling during every chapter.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸?

This was a wonderful and rich story full of heart and life lessons, and a story I recommend!

“Behind every good man is an even better woman.

Another absolute gem by Sara Goodman Confino! I don’t think she’s capable of writing anything less. I was a tad wary when I began because politics is not something I have great interest in reading about, but because I loved Don’t Forget to Write so much I gave it a shot and I am so thankful I went with my gut!

Beverly has spent her entire marriage being the perfect wife and making sure her husband could want for nothing. So when she catches him in a promiscuous act with his young secretary she is beside herself. Now on her own as a single mother it’s time for revenge. What better way to achieve that than by beating him at his own game? Coming from a political background, a feisty mother of her own and by simply being a woman who gets the job done she quickly storms into Michael Landau’s life like a bull in a China shop. Will these men be able to look past the fact that she’s a woman? They will if they know what’s good for them.

Ugh, so fantastic and I loved the small crossovers from her other works. I suggest everyone get themselves a copy!

Behind Every Good Man is the fourth novel by American author, Sara Goodman Confino. It may be 1962, but when former-Congressman’s daughter Beverly Diamond finds her husband in a compromising position with his secretary, she’s not prepared to be the silent, dutiful wife and look the other way. The mother of two packs his bags and tosses him out of the marital home. Then, to make herself feel better, she does a bit of home redecorating on his charge card.

When he threatens to sell the house, something that will force her and two small children into a tiny apartment, she realises she needs a job. But, having married Larry without finishing college, she has no formal qualifications or experience. Her try at a retail position lasts only a few hours. But when she sees a piece on a young man running for the Senate in opposition to Sam Gibson, it’s a lightbulb moment. Larry may be Sam’s campaign manager, but Bev is the one with experience in that field, having been there for all of her father’s political career.

Running Michael Landau’s campaign for the Senate will be the perfect revenge on Larry, and it doesn’t take a lot to convince the Senate aspirant, even if his current campaign manager continues to object. And before very long before Bev has another good reason the help Michael win a seat: he’s the right man for the job. There won’t be any filibustering on important issues from him, and it’s quickly clear that he’s ready to represent all his constituents, not just the white male ones.

Bev is lucky that Millie Gelman has decided to move in with her daughter to look after her grandchildren, so she can throw her all into campaigning, although she is a little concerned about her parents marriage. Soon, though, she’s proving that who you know is quite important. But Larry and Sam aren’t going down without a fight, and they know how to fight dirty

It may be the era that Goodman Confino has chosen, but there’s a definite Lessons In Chemistry feel to the story, and her smart, gutsy protagonist reinforces that. She easily evokes the era and the public mindset of the time. Her characters are appealing, their dialogue often laugh-out-loud funny, and the reader can’t help but cheer them on. Very entertaining.

I am officially obsessed with Sara Goodman Confino's books after finishing Behind Every Good Man - with strong, Jewish female characters and storylines that grab you from the get-go, her books have become must-reads for me. Beverly's story of finding her own footing, not just at home but in the world of politics is one I found captivating and page-turning. I can't wait to read more from Confino in the future - and I absolutely adored the small nods to her last book, Don't Forget to Write!

This is an charming and entertaining novel about a 1960s housewife who becomes a campaign manager to get revenge on her cheating ex.

The story really leans into the message of female empowerment. Sometimes maybe too much. I felt by the end like I was getting smashed over the head. But I loved Beverly and her network of women. Her mother, her best friend, her cousin, even her social acquaintances, all have her back as she navigates the contentious world of politics while remaining a mom to two kids at home. There were lots of sweet themes about motherhood, purpose, and soft power. I appreciated the way the book portrayed her divorce and the men in Beverly's life.

There is a low level romance playing out in the background that manages to never overwhelm the story but does add some drama.

Honestly, I'm impressed. I'll be seeking out more Confino!

Thank you to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for access to the arc. Made my day!

Nothing makes me nervous like reading a new book by a favorite author of mine. I don’t divvy out that title of “favorite author lightly. So when one of these authors puts out a new novel there is always a slight nagging fear it won’t hold up to the previous book they wrote. Mrs. Confino’s last novel “Don't Forget to Write is one of my top 10 reads from 2023. How do you beat or even tie that? With raw, magical writing talent, and this author has it in spades.

“Behind Every Good Man has all of the unforgettable characters and fun, fast paced dialogue that we were given in “Don’t Forget to Write with delicious pop corn chapters that kept making me think, Okay just one more chapter nibble and then I am GOING to bed. The bags under my eyes say otherwise, folks.

Where this blew me away was with the main character’s grit and determination. It’s 1960 and Beverly is a SAHM to two cute kiddos, bending over backwards for her husband to be the elite housewife only to discover her husband and his secretary having a rendezvous in his office. The husband Larry is an absolute asshole. You thought Professor Umbridge was bad? My god I hated this man. The difference between Beverly and myself is that in this situation I would have fallen apart but Bev took the mindset of F$&* this and decided to take things into her own hands. Without any actual training she takes on a position of campaign manager for Michael Landau, whose opponent in the upcoming election just happens to be Larry’s boss.

Okay so that alone is just a great storyline. What I wasn’t anticipating was the deep connection I felt from Bev. I actually felt inspired by her. She has inspired me to want to try to help campaign (albeit in a way smaller manner) and just try to help make a difference. It’s rare that a book actually makes me reach into myself and contemplate what I can do better as a person.

I could go on and on. And I will, just a tad bit. The characters in here are phenomenal. Stuart, the campaign manager stole the show for me. Rarely do you find secondary characters as well rounded and with as much depth. And my lord do I love me a snarky side character with quick wit. And for those who have missed being in the world of “Don’t Forget to Write, keep your eyes peeled for Marilyn. I squealed in delight when she showed up.

This book hits shelves in August of 2024 so mark those calendars. You NEED this is your reading life. Man that was SO GOOD!!!!!

I freaking LOVE and was everything I could have hoped it would be. It might be set in 1962 but Beverly is not letting anyone walk all over her, and that includes her no-good cheating husband. The storyline has politics at its heart, but it is also about making your dreams come true and not taking any crap. There is a dusting of romance that was a lovely addition to the plotline, and it brings up so many issues that we can still see present today. In fact, this would make a fantastic book club selection since there is a lot to talk about.

I oohed and aahed over so many moments, and I probably laughed out loud just as many times if not more. I also have to make a special mention of the audiobook which is narrated by Helen Laser and available on Kindle Unlimited. She truly nails Bev as well as the entire vibe of the book and was such a joy to listen to. Once I started, I couldn't put it down, and I listened to this baby in a single day. SGC always has such emotive and authentic characters, and I felt that to the max in Behind Every Good Man. You will be rooting for Bev and Michael the entire time, and I dare say learn some things along the way. Be sure not to miss the author's note!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I would describe this book as Reputation Era coded historical fiction.. and it was perfection.

Let me get into the details... Ready for it?

It's 1962 and Bev is the perfect housewife. Or she is until she walks in on her husband Larry (aka the smallest man who ever lived) cheating on her! with his secretary!! How unoriginal Larry!!! This is why we can’t have nice things!! As Bev's world comes crashing down, she knows there is nothing better than revenge. So, she creates the ultimate revenge plot to ensure Larry gets the Karma that is coming to him:

Step 1: “I did something bad" - Bev, after she goes on a shopping spree on Larry's card.

Step 2: “Look what you made me do - Bev as she gets a job as campaign manager for the hip new Senate candidate that is running against the campaign that Larry is campaign manager of.

As all true Taylor fans know, while Reputation has themes of vengeance and anger, many of its songs are majorly romantic. And it turns out that hip new Senate candidate, Michael, is gorgeous, both inside and out. I think you can guess where this is going 👀 Will Michael be the king of Bev’s heart?

This book also has a large nod to fellow female help. Let’s go mama Millie, bff Nancy, fellow divorcee Fran, and the other woman Linda! You four are the unsung heroes of the book. And while who can say how Bev’s romantic life will go, we all know our friends are our true end game.

If you choose to read this book, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! And if you don’t, well don’t blame me.

5.0 wonderful stars! I LOVED, loved, loved this book 😍!!!!! My favorite by this author thus far. By page 58 and the beginning of Chapter 12, I was giddy and grinning like crazy. I just knew this book was gonna be good and I was gonna love it. Once again this author gives us another one her sassy, strong, female characters we can cheer for. This time it's Beverly Diamond's turn to shake things up and take her power back. It's 1962 and the early beginnings of change in this country. The story centers on a Maryland Senate political campaign with a focus on womens issues. (Reading this made me sad for how archaic things were then for women, but grateful for how far we've come and will continue to going forward.) Beverly is determined and driven (thanks to Larry, the cheating ex-husband) to make real change for herself and her two small kids, but also for underdog Michael's political campaign.

Beverly's mother was a winner with her sly sarcasm and obsession with clean hands 😆. There were brief appearances by two main characters from 2 previous books (Marilyn & Evelyn) which made me smile. Other great characters here were Beverly's dad, her resourceful best friend Nancy, and of course, Michael.

This book was 332 pages of sheer delight. I'm sooo ready for the next book and hoping its soon. Will also be adding this book to my audible library for a re-read.

Mazal tov to my amazing and talented friend Sara Goodman Confino on the birth of her book baby today--Behind Every Good Man.

Beyond Every Good Man takes place in 1962, and tells the story of Beverly, a perfect model housewife to a political maven. When Beverly discovers her husband cheating, she promptly kicks him out! Even though it's 60s, and her options as a Jewish woman and mother to two are limited, she's determined to beat her spouse at his own game... by entering politics.

Some reasons I loved this book:

1. In typical Confino style, it’s quick, fun, and an easy read. I blew through this tale in one setting, because I was just so damn interested to know what would happen next! And yet, for as fun as this book is, it handles important topics, such as antisemitism, inequality in politics, and perhaps my favorite part of this book, the emotional labor of being a woman.

2. For my Jewish romance lovers, this book has plenty of swoon. What starts as a revenge fantasy (in all the best ways, honestly) soon becomes a love story. The hero of our story is also Jewish, hot, relatively successful... and most important to Beverly, someone who hears rather than just listens. And while I’m trying not to give away any spoilers here, lovers of Jewish joy will be pleased with this satisfying and happy ending.

3. This is a story about an older woman, a mother of two, going through a divorce, who in the process... truly finds herself and her voice. It was so relatable. I loved the frank discussion on the power dynamics in marriage. Beverly has been the dutiful Jewish daughter and wife—striving her entire being for perfection--sacrificing her own dreams and happiness to uplift her husband. There’s this great line on page 157 which reads, “He knew the woman who did everything to make HIS life comfortable. I found myself nodding my head, and underlining pages worth of quotes, because it was all so relatable.

4. In my humble opinion, there is only one person ON THE PLANET who could write a story about 1960s politics—during a contentious political season in 2024--and make it STILL feel fun and lighthearted. And that person is SARA GOODMAN CONFINO. Honestly, I have no idea how she did that.

5. I adored how Jewish this was, how Judaism was POSITIVELY represented, and as your purveyor of Jewish Joy Books, I’m pleased to report that no Jews died at the end! I also really appreciated how Behind Every Good Man showcased the political allyship between the black and Jewish communities in the 1960s. Helen Walker was a truly stupendous character. There’s also a lovely theme that runs through this book which is the difference between someone listening versus being heard.

6. I often think that truly great writers don’t just arc their primary characters, but the characters around their hero/heroine. I loved how so many characters in this book changed and grew because of their relationship with Beverly. From her mother, to the mistress, to the people who work with her and Michel in politics—this is a beautiful tale about how “we’re all going to be okay because we did this together. (Page 313)

If it’s not obvious, I freaking loved this book. I didn’t think Sara could get better after Don’t Forget to Write, but this book truly tops even that. And yes! For those of you who are big Confino fans, you may recognize some characters from previous books!

I positively LOVED Behind Every Good Man by Sara Confino. It’s a book that made me laugh, rage, and swoon, and yet, it’s a book that never feels preachy or overwritten. It’s fun enough for a beach read, yet deep enough for a book club pick, tackling topics as large as politics, misogyny, motherhood, identity, and antisemitism. It carefully and deftly explores the role of women, rights and being heard. It’s fiercely and proudly Jewish, and for my romance lovers, there’s definitely some great swoon to be had. There is literally so much to love about this book that I don’t have nearly enough time or words to fit here.

All of which to say, buy a copy for yourself. And then, make sure you give one to both your sons and daughters. Behind Every Good Man by Sara Goodman Confino is a book that you do not want to miss!

4.5 stars!! Never intended on reading two books back to back by the same author, but needed something light to read before the chunker I have on deck next. I was happy to see this was available through Kindle unlimited and boy was it a delight. I loved the 1960’s setting, watching Beverly overcome her circumstances and take control of her destiny. What a firecracker she and her mom were. This author writes really strong female characters in the best way. Even if you despise politics like I do, I encourage you to pick this one up.

Behind Every Good Man is an incredible read that takes place in 1962. It combines women's fiction and historical fiction.

The book focuses on a Maryland senatorial campaign. And it features amazing Jewish rep.

The main character is 27 year old Beverly Diamond. She is a wife and mother. Honestly I would not have thought that I would have loved a book taking place in this time period and focusing on politics. But somehow I could not put this book down. I loved absolutely everything about this book. It was just amazing.

The characters were so great. I was obsessed with Bev. But I also adored all of the supporting characters, especially Michael Landau (running for senator), Stuart (running his campaign), Nancy (Bev's best friend) and Mildred (Bev's mother).

The book has quick short chapters. And amazing cameos from some favorite characters from Don't Forget To Write. There is also some romance, which was perfection.

Overall, I just loved getting to see Beverly thrive. This was such a good book! I highly recommend it!

Thanks to netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for allowing me to read this book.

has written another winner! was so hard to put down and I missed it when I had to get back to real life.

I loved Beverly's moxie and the way she worked to help her senatorial candidate potentially achieve victory, all while trying to manage her home as a single mother and deal with her own mother at the same time. Beverly's mother, Millie, was quite a character, and now I want her to have her own novel. There were times I just laughed out loud from something Millie said or did. I could understand and appreciate the stress Beverly was under throughout the novel. Her marriage just imploded and it was hard to find work as a single mother in the 1960s. There was also discrimination against Jewish people at the time, as evidenced during her job search.

I love that the story takes place in the DC area, specifically in Maryland and not too far from where I live. It was easy to picture locations, even though the story took place so long ago. I also love when novels are set in the 1960s and seeing how much women had to put up with during that time period.

My only critique, and this is very, very minor, is that I wouldn't have minded more steaminess during some parts. The novel did well without it, but I'm always glad for the heat level to go up a few notches in anything I read.

If you haven't read Don't Forget to Write yet, I'd recommend reading it first or be prepared to deal with some spoilers. You should also read Sara's first two books while you're at it.

I loved Behind Every Good Man and highly recommend it! It's perfect for fans of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Movie casting suggestions:
Beverly:
Millie: (My nod to Mrs. Maisel, but Alex can play any role to perfection!)
Michael:
Stuart:
Larry:
Nancy:

A WOMAN FINDS HER OWN WORTH IN 1960'S AMERICA

If you liked , this is your next read!

What I liked

Beverly: Get ready to fall in love with the headstrong Beverly, who decided to make a life for herself and her children while also getting revenge on her ex-husband AND make the world a better place. She's courageous, creative, strong and kind - absolutely adore her.

Humorous: There were several places, where I felt like laughing out loud. And while some of the topics are quite heavy (misogyny, racism, antisemitism, cheating etc.) the humor kept the story light and fun. Perfectly balanced.

Slow burn: If you like slow burn, you'll absolutely love following Beverly and Michael fall for each other. It's sweet and adorable.
