This book is the second in a series and it is way better, way better than the first one. At least the plot holds this time. The author also made an effort to bring to light some obscure points about the character's behavior in the first book.

But that might not have been enough to help me relate to the lead character.
Anna is decisionnally challenged. I know that's a harsh statement, and I tried to come around as, she is compassionate, she has to cope with too many things and that alters her judgement, she is scared, but no, the conclusion is she is decisionally challenged. To explain how I reached this conclusion, here is how my feeling evolved through the book:
Don't stop crying, run just run.
Why? Why?
Really, if you want to keep it secret, just shut up.
Why? Why?
A little more of why?
Self sacrificing is good.
Hum, be careful who you trust.
Ok, this explains things.
Hum, that's getting better...
Totally ok, totally ok, totally ok...
No, just no. <--- that's when she became forever decisionally challenged and her alone, because at some point I had doubts about other characters as well.

A lot of characters seem to have memory problems, like they don't remember what they did the last time they met --> chapter 4 is hilarious.

Oh, and I almost forgot, this world seems to be binary because nobody ever sees the third option.

This book is very versatile, also because of Anna. In the first book, I was thinking "Awh, poor Anna, poor Meg..." the men were terrible. But, in this one she kinda got here revenge, I guess, somehow...

Once I realized that Anna was never going to do anything like a normal person and that I needed to stop wanting her to, I started to enjoy the book a bit better. Seriously, it was a fun read.

It lost the star on the consistencies though. It's not inconsistent with the main plot so it doesn't alter the story, but there are a lot of little inconsistencies that annoyed me.

I received an ARC of the wonderful and very yummy book from the author in exchange for an Read and review and my honest opinion of the book. Here is my review and my honest opinion of her book.
Last Ashes is about vampires, werewolf's, faes, and humans and immortals. Which makes this book so very yummy and so full twist and turns you don't know what to expect next. Which is excellent, and exciting!! You are sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for the next pin to drop or in this case the page to turn. So sit back and let mousiey tell you a little about this wonderful and amazing book.
It starts out just after the end of a battle where the current vampire king Victor has been killed or so we are told. The current overlord Christian has captured Victor love Anna an plans on marrying her for himself. But first she must promise loyalty to him an to him alone. If she does then she will be release from the dungeon. In the mean time the rebels are killing his warriors right beneath his nose.
Now my questions to you are-- does Anna swear loyalty to Christian?? Do they get married or does she marry Victor?? Do they rebels take back the castle and kill Christian?? Does Anna have a child?? Or is Anna an immortal?? All these questions are answered and more in story.
I recommend this book to ya and adults. I also recommend that everyone goes out now an purchase this book immediately. As you will want to read this story. It is so moving, hot, full of ACTION, the characters are so real and life like. That I felt like I got to know Victor, Anna, leo, and the rest of them personally. The scences are described so life like. That I give this story a 5 plus rating. Ms Kechagias you have done such a superior job on this book; I look forward to reading more of your work. You are very talented and gifted. Now READERS MOUSIEY SAYS GO GET LAST ASHES!!!!!

Anna VanDyken loves Victor Mendez King of Vampires is fighting to protect her from Cristian Sitzman. Now Anna witnesses Victor's death feeling utterly destroyed. Cristian claims the title of Overlord. Anna must hide her true feelings from him to protect herself. Kayden is working with the rebels against The Overlord. Anna has been dreaming of the past and her undiscovered power. Anna discovers a secret which rocks her world. What is the secret? Can Anna protect those she loves from harm? Will Cristian succeed? Your answers await you in Last Ashes.

I'm terribly afraid to give to many spoilers. Last Ashes is a pulse pounding story that hits the ground running from first to last page. The worldbuilding and characters are bold, rich, and full of history. My mind was blown by many things that were revealed in the book whether in past or present. Definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

A lot to absorb

There's so much happening with the characters I met in the first book. This second book brings so much more information to light. There are twists and turns you don't expect or could anticipate. This tale is constantly churning. At times it's almost confusing trying to sort out dream states vs the character reality. Is this a skin-walker acting as the character or no?

I was glad to see a little improvement in story flow with this book. However, I struggled with some of the back history a few characters relate. Some details contradict, a prior understanding in plot will flat out change later. Regardless, I'm still as invested in Anna's story as I was in book 1 and am hoping a 3rd book is coming. I do want the rest of the story!

The novel Last Ashes is the second book of the Fire of the Soul series. The story continues on with Anna VanDyken, who is fated to be with the malicious Skinwalker, Christian Sitzman, due to the unforeseen tragic circumstance of her vampire fiancé, Victor Menedez.

In this book, Anna represents a more grown-up role than in the first book. Not specifically in age, but instead on the outlook of her survival and those within her circle. I saw how she stepped back from certain situations, to see things from a more "big picture" perspective. It was during these times she would let go of her first emotional reaction to choose a more logical response. Undeniably, it was a deed that was not easy for she struggled to remain loyal to her heart by concealing her true feelings from Christian. It was an act that took a lot of inner strength, and I admired her for it.

Along with Christian’s new title of Overlord, he is also an egotistical Skinwalker that is willing to do just about anything to claim Anna’s heart—with no remorse—even if it means causing her mental or physical pain. And I liked how the author put out of the ordinary elements into the story; it made me see certain characters for the first time in a different light.

Last Ashes continues the plot nicely and is well thought-out. This includes the turn-of-events involving Anna, Christian, Victor, plus one that I didn’t see becoming Anna’s priority towards the middle of the book. I’m intrigued by the major role Anna now portrays because of her new self-owned discovery, and how this finding will affect her future with those who she cherish, along with those that are detrimentally attached to her. I enjoyed it, and look forward to reading the next one.

This book was written with great imagination and strong writing, that you are turning each page to find what going to happen to the army of friends and foes in this Underworld battle. Victor is being held by Christian, while Christian I s trying to keep Anna right beside him. In this book feelings are going to come to light, choices are made that will have major consequences for this group. Anna in this book, you see that she has grown-up more and you see what made Christian, the way that he is. And let's not forget Victor's piece of soul that's in Anna, if Victor's gets it back will his feelings for Anna still be there or be different. So many questions!!! As we get to know more of what each one in this group and their strength to stand an fight for different reasons, and we understand what brought each here. There plan to finally end it, will take all the control of some, more than others. This is a great book, but leaves us with unanswered questions, so we guessing a 3rd book in our future from Racquel Kechagias. I love her imagination, to give us this world so full of different paranormal creatures and so much intrigue. Thanks for giving Fires Within and Last Ashes to me for my honest reviews!! 31/2 STARS I recommend these books to all that like a good paranormal book to enjoy, then this is perfect!!! Congrats Racquel on both books, can't wait for the next book!!!

This is the second book in the series. I enjoyed the novel. However, I think it takes a few twists and turns that make the novel a little convoluted. We are on one story line and it then developers into multiple story lines. I did like some of the twists the story took. The main character Anna does seem to grow more and become more of herself in this book. She is no longer what people expect her to be. She is becoming herself and finding her true self.
