really liked it

The novel Last Ashes is the second book of the Fire of the Soul series. The story continues on with Anna VanDyken, who is fated to be with the malicious Skinwalker, Christian Sitzman, due to the unforeseen tragic circumstance of her vampire fiancé, Victor Menedez.

In this book, Anna represents a more grown-up role than in the first book. Not specifically in age, but instead on the outlook of her survival and those within her circle. I saw how she stepped back from certain situations, to see things from a more "big picture" perspective. It was during these times she would let go of her first emotional reaction to choose a more logical response. Undeniably, it was a deed that was not easy for she struggled to remain loyal to her heart by concealing her true feelings from Christian. It was an act that took a lot of inner strength, and I admired her for it.

Along with Christian’s new title of Overlord, he is also an egotistical Skinwalker that is willing to do just about anything to claim Anna’s heart—with no remorse—even if it means causing her mental or physical pain. And I liked how the author put out of the ordinary elements into the story; it made me see certain characters for the first time in a different light.

Last Ashes continues the plot nicely and is well thought-out. This includes the turn-of-events involving Anna, Christian, Victor, plus one that I didn’t see becoming Anna’s priority towards the middle of the book. I’m intrigued by the major role Anna now portrays because of her new self-owned discovery, and how this finding will affect her future with those who she cherish, along with those that are detrimentally attached to her. I enjoyed it, and look forward to reading the next one.
