Moorea Seal is an author, designer, and entrepreneur based out of Seattle, WA. She is the founder and namesake of the women's retail website mooreaseal.com and store front in downtown Seattle which features over 160 handmade designers from across the U.S. and donates 7% of all proceeds to non-profits. Through "The 52 Lists Project" "52 Lists for Happiness" and new latest book "Make Yourself at Home", she seeks to write journals and books that inspire and encourage people from all walks of life, to harness their inner wisdom, strength and self love through list making.
With a degree in Illustration, graduating college in 2009, Moorea was faced with the harsh realities of the job market, or lack there of, during the economic recession. Seeing no straight forward path in a career in the arts, and still unsure of how to mix her passions of art, music, philanthropic work, writing, and fashion into one avenue, she decided to start her blog moorea-seal.com. While juggling 2 full time nanny jobs and a part time job as an artist's assistant to a sculptor, she was blogging everyday to motivate herself to keep creating. She was also singing in a band, teaching herself HTML, and doing freelance Illustration and Design work on the side. Inspired by her work as an artist's assistant, she decided to teach herself how to make jewelry and with $10, two hand me down jewelry pliers from an old lady in her childhood community, and some junk jewelry from a thrift store, she started her first business in Etsy.
By 2010, she began to focus all of her energy on creative pursuits through jewelry design, graphic design, illustration, blog design, and blogging. By 2012, she became a featured persona on Pinterest along side 29 other major brands such as Martha Stewart, Dr Oz, Anthropologie and the U.S. Army in "Pinterest's 30 Days of Pinspiration."
Today you can find her juggling many hats, from being the CEO of the Moorea Seal brand, to writing books, volunteering, motivational speaking, designing new lines of jewelry and accessories, and much more.
I've followed Moorea for a long time, and when she came out with this journal I was super excited because I love her work. I bought the journal at the start of 2017 and kept up with it for about half the year. Turns out I don't love list-making when it isn't spontaneous, and it helps to have things going on in your life to write about, which I just didn't at the time.
I'm thrilled with this purchase. I purchased it to celebrate my birthday and plan to do a list a week. Since the book starts with week 1 in the winter, I chose to start with Week 40 in the Fall. That's the beauty of this book, you can create it how ever you want. I love the list ideas (mood-boosting songs, people who brighten your day, favorite things about fall) and the Take Action steps for each week to expand on your lists. It would make a excellent birthday gift or Christmas gift. Thick heavy pages allow for the writer to use markers, pens, pencils or paint to create their lists. Plenty of space allows for creativity. Highly recommend!
A fun book that encourages you to journal by making lists rather than writing expository entries. Lists are arranged by season; some examples include: "List All the people Who Brighten Your Day," "List Your Greatest Comforts," "List All Your Favorite Things About Fall," and "List Your Top Twenty Mood-Boosting Songs."
Even though there are enough lists to work at one per week for a year, I find myself randomly adding single items to any list I choose whenever I'm so moved....😁
I am a list maker!! I love to see things written on a page- goals, memories, quotes, songs, favorite things, etc. I bought his book on vacation- bought I'd like to journal things throughout the year. A friend saw that I bought it, she bought one, and now we have a 355 member Facebook group devoted to it. Super excited to take this little journaling journey.
I love this journal -- perfect little prompts to remind you how much you have to be thankful for and to make you more aware of your surroundings and loved ones. It's a very easy journal to stick to and/or catch up with when you do fall behind. I liked that it was a weekly journal and not a daily one. I skipped a few because they just didn't click with me. A monthly journal would be fantastic.
Pretty and trendy. I loved the lists online, and this is an extension of that. It is a year-long project, and I feel weird starting in September That was the only drawback. :)
I bought this a few years ago because I love making lists, and finally committed to filling it out this year, but I’m tossing it here at the end of May. The photos and pages are gorgeous, and I think I could enjoy the list prompts if they were just that, but the “take action prompts for each list just bug me because they are trite or not realistic. . Ex: “Step 1, list favorite places you’ve traveled. Take action: make your everyday life more like those places. Uh…I would just have more fun listing favorite places. “Step 1: list the ways you get energized. Take action: do one of those things this week. (I’m paraphrasing). Feels like a bait and switch. I just want to make lists and work things out in my own way and time.
Going through the 52 Lists Project in the year 2021 helped me focus (at least for a little while each week) on mindfulness, gratitude, or even something delightful like listing my favorite songs. In a different year, I might have rated this guided journal 5 stars. Some weeks this year, it was almost too challenging to make my prompted weekly list. But I did it. I'm glad I finished the prompts. I'm sure that in the future I'll enjoy looking back at this completed journal.
I am excited to try this out as a weekly journal for 2018. I like writing out lists so I think this will be easier for me than other journals. I flipped through the whole book and loved the prompts that were made for each weekly list. The book is also gorgeous with beautiful photos and four "chapters" for each season. I love it and I am hoping this will be something that I stick with.
I was gifted this beautiful book by one of my dearest friends last Christmas. Each week this year I wrote a list based on the prompt (I love lists). The take it further section was brilliant and although I didn’t do that each week it helped me to experience the year in a different way. Such a beautiful gift.
Wonderful book that forces us to look within and document our lives according to what really matters. This makes a thoughtful New Year’s gift. Also I think when completed, it would be a lovely heirloom to pass on. I documented some amazing changes I experienced this past year. It’s easy and fun.
I am just finishing this journal for the year. I closed every week of the year with a list. These lists were a great weekly practice that offered reflection and insight, and I looked forward to writing a list every week.
I saw this book during the holidays and finally picked it up read on January 1 - from cover to cover, it's a wonderful daily joy! I will be writing my lists and getting more into the depth of this but it's read from front to back and 5 stars just isn't enough!!
I LOVE THIS BOOK. But it might be because I love LISTS. If you don't love lists...you might not love this book. :) PS. The reason it got 4 stars is a bit hilarious. It's TOO BEAUTIFUL to write in! I used a pen that bleeds through and it ruined the page behind it (that was the first page of another list).
I loved the idea of this book but it was not as practical as I expected. I didn't start at the beginning of the year, and some of the suggestions held no attraction for me. Will follow up this year and see what a difference a year makes.
This quickly turned into something I was forcing myself to do rather than something I looked forward to doing. Most of these prompts are just awful, and failing to do all Moorea's random weekly challenges made me feel lazy and like a failure. I love making lists but this one really wasn't for me.
