Jamie and Max have intense chemistry - even though they drive each other crazy. Max thinks Jamie is a magnet for trouble and Jamie thinks Max is the most annoyingly sexy, mysterious man she's ever met. She knows she should stay away from him, but there's something irresistible about the millionaire playboy. Jamie is a newspaper owner from a small southern town. In FULL SPEED, she's after the scoop of a lifetime. Max Holt is right in the middle of that story. What follows is the tale of a corrupt minister, a gang of mobsters on the loose, a hound dog called Fleas, a wise-cracking computer genius, and lots of love in the fast lane. Not to mention plenty of steamy action between Jamie and Max.
Janet Evanovich is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Stephanie Plum series, the Lizzy and Diesel series, twelve romance novels, the Alexandra Barnaby novels and Trouble Maker graphic novel, and How I Write: Secrets of a Bestselling Author, as well as the Fox and O'Hare series with co-author Lee Goldberg.
I really love these older Janet Evanovich romance books. They are not quite sure what they want to be, and I love the different elements thrown in along with the cozy romance. Max and Jamie are a very interesting couple, and the push-pull of their new relationship is fun to watch.
When Max blew into Jamie's life like Hurrican Ian blew into Florida all Jamie could do was hold on. Hold on to her business, her sanity and herself. Max was a force of nature and he wanted Jamie. Jamie is all slow your roll here buddy. I'm not moving that fast for anyone, let alone a millionaire I've only known for a week.
When they both come under fire from an enemy of Max's Jamie is just as mad and wants to get the full scoop of a story for her newspaper. She finds herself stranded and the new pet parent of a hound dog named Fleas who has "issues". When she finally catches up with Max she ends up in the middle of a murder and a mob kidnapping. It will take all the tech wizardry Max has to save Jamie. Lucky for Jamie he is the supreme wizard of tech.
This is the third book in the "Full " series. Full Speed, written by Janet Evanovich and Charlotte Hughes, is a light romantic crime novel. Jamie and Max are on the outs with each other. Max is looking into a corrupt minister. Jamie wants a good story for her paper. So, they team up again to see what mob ties the minister has and where that leads them. I would have enjoyed the book more if I hadn't felt like I was missing something by not having read the previous book. Most of the background is explained for those of us that didn't read the last book, but there seemed to be a bit of a continuation of the previous novel, instead of being a whole new story. It's still good though. Don't go into this series trying to compare it with the "Plum " novels. This is a light read, and Jamie is silly at times, but the humor is toned down here and there is a great deal of sexual tension between Jaime and Max. There are some tense moments in the last few chapters as well. Overall, a C+. I will give this series another try by going back and reading the first two. I would strongly recommend starting at the beginning with this series.
This book is not nearly as funny as the Stephanie Plum series. The humorous sidekick (Dave) is just annoying and doesn't compare to Lula. Overall it was pretty flat.
This kindle e-book novel is from my Kindle Unlimited account book three of six
As a fan of Janet Evanovich I have never been disappointed with her novels.
Jamie and Max are on the way to investigate a preacher and what is going on. They get involved in murder and the mafia. It all comes to a happy ending.
I would recommend this and authors 👍 of romantic relationships mystery novels 👍🔰. 2024
Oh what unique characters and an interesting plot "Full Speed" has to offer! Jamie & Max are the two main characters who are working together while being involved with a dishonest, sex-fiend minister, a group of mobsters, a sassy computer (located in a car- think "KITT" in Knight Rider), and a lovable hound dog named Fleas! Of course, Jamie and Max have some chemistry that is hard to deny. All in all it is a delightful read full of crazy incidents that extract loads of chuckles one comes to expect with every Janet Evanovich book! Guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and a laugh to your belly!
Janet Evanovich has proven that she is the mistress of slapstick cozy mysteries, with Stephanie Plum, whose investigative adventures more often than not get her into the fire from the fry pan and are only exceeded by her romantic entanglements have been welcomed through 23 books.
She has followed the winning formula in a number of other series, including the "Full" books written with Charlotte Hughes and featuring "journalist" Jamie Swift and millionaire Max Holt. You'll notice that I put Jamie's job description in quotes because I don't know of any journalist that behaves quite like she does, and I haven't amended Holt's title with his 'private investigative' efforts. These are thin, silly backgrounds but it really doesn't matter in these books because its all about the attraction between the two characters and how they somehow manage to get each other out of trouble.
Its not enough for a steady diet of reading for me. I got tired of Stephanie Plum a while ago and while reading this book, which was certainly enjoyable ... as is a bit of chocolate but not as satisfying as a prime steak ... I thought of the old "I Love Lucy" shows. There's a lot of similarities. Both are quite a bit formulaic and the characters never grow or develop. I once longed for Stephanie to grow up and finalize on the boyfriend but that will never happen ... I suspect Max and Jamie will be the same.
So if you want a bit of fluff between meatier tomes, give this book a try. The story features Jamie being mad at Max (a perpetual position considering she acts like a crazy twit and he can't keep his hormones in check) and each determined to investigate a preacher with suspected ties to the Mob. Jamie, looking for a story, goes in 'undercover' as a parishioner with a 'sex addiction' and Max goes right to high-tech gadgets. And don't forget the secondary characters, a computer with an attitude and a right hand man with enough health hangups its amazing he gets up in the morning. I was rooting for the bloodhound.
great at beginning very funny but then was boring and had internalized misogyny with the heroine slut shaming herself for dressing promiscuous. (although this was published in 2003 so at least it wasn't like Helena Hunting who writes sexist books in 2020).
Max is Jamie's silent partner in her small town newspaper - but actually not so silent. When Max gets mixed up in some shady business that ends in Jamie's life being put in danger, he decides he will finish the business without here. But Jamie knows this is the story of a lifetime for her little paper and refuses to be left behind.
During the course of getting the story, Jamie finds herself the proud owner of an old hound dog called Fleas because he comes with a truck she is forced to buy.
Loved the dog in the story - a very nice and funny touch. I like Jamie and Max and the talking car with the Marilyn Monroe voice. Really cute funny story - nothing deep or meaningful here...just a cute read.
Newspaper editor Jamie Swift likes a little predictability in her life. When she suddenly finds herself minus a fiancé and with a major case of the hots for her silent partner, millionaire Maximillian Holt, any bit of predictability goes right out the window. Max is like a tornado, turning her well-ordered world upside down. Now someone’s unhappy with Max’s recent business deal—dangerously unhappy.
Posing as husband and wife, with computer genius Muffin and a mutt named Fleas along for the ride, Max and Jamie are in the middle of another crazy case, closer than ever to each other—and too close for comfort to the kind of people who will do anything to stop them.
The book was a charming, fun and quick read. I can’t get enough of Jamie’s and Max’s antics.
I read full tilt years ago and thought it was the most entertaining thing. A hot billionaire, I fun an spunky female lead, a compelling crime mystery, and my favorite part, a talking car named muffin with the voice of Marlene Monroe. I finally came cross this one, book 3, and couldn't resist picking it up. I never read book 1. It's just as fun and entertaining as I remember full tilt to be. Lots of twists and turns. And comical banter that made me love the last book. Throw in a old hound dog named fleas who hates country music and you've got a fun time. I'd defiantly recommend. if you loved the Stephanie plum books you'll love this.:)
So, I've decided that this series is similar to manga; each book is like a chapter and you end up reading them one after the other in order to get the whole story! It's been a fun story so far, what with the talking car, the inept mafia hit men, swear jars, vintage mustangs, and now the dog that doesn't like country music...
Enjoyed this next installment in the 'Full' series - the interplay between Jamie and Max makes this a lot of fun. I will certainly be on the lookout for the next one.
I haven't read the previous two books in this series, but I have read Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series and the Between the Numbers books. This book seems to follow a similar pattern to most of her Plum books.
POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD (READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION) ***
Jamie Swift takes the Stephanie Plum role--she's a newspaper owner who's after a story and trouble manages to find her. Along the way, she acquires an old truck and a dog named Fleas.
Max Holt takes the Ranger/Morelli roles from the Plum series. The plot arc of having them attracted to each other but not moving forward in their relationship is stale for me after 25 Plum books of the same thing.
Dave apparently takes the role of Lula, the sidekick--at least for this book. He's not quite as entertaining as Lula is in that role. I do like Dave though--at least he's consistent in his character, and I suspect he's loyal to Max.
The history between Max and Nick Santoni is not spelled out in this book. We're told something happened but I'm not sure what--only that Nick got the worst of the deal. (Well, I guess right near the end of the book we are told it had something to do with a TV station--the TV station was mentioned other places in the book, but I hadn't realized how it tied together until the end of the book.) Nick's apparently out for revenge--Nick's also apparently on thin ice with his family.
Episode three in the life and times of Jamie Swift, journalist and millionaire Max Holt, picks up where book two left off; thus, having flounced off in a huff, Jamie finds herself in the middle of nowhere without transport or habitation. From these dubious circumstances she pitches up with a blood hound called Fleas she has acquired along the way, in the middle of Max's investigation of a charismatic preacher with suspected ties to the Mob.
As with the earlier books, this is a great romp. Max Holt is every girls dream, but Jamie is resisting his charms, intent on a scoop of the lifetime for her newspaper. Unfortunately, keen to keep her story to herself Jamie places herself in danger with a gang of mobsters.
I missed Max's sister Dedi, but Muffin, the computer with the voice of Marilyn Monroe was much in evidence, although being installed in a truck was not to her liking. Computer's going through the menopause find these things trying!
While terrific fun, it is also suspenseful and a good read. Recommended ------ Reviewer: Lizzie Hayes
I love everything Evaolvich writes. These light romantic comedies from her earlier days are a hoot. This one is intriguing in there is a mystery involved. Maybe Max is in danger but for sure his sister has invited him to town to help her husband, Frankie, find out who is sending the threatening letters. Max has a car with a computer invented by him named Muffin. The whole story is clever and funny with just the right amount of back and forth between Jamie, the main character, and her fiance, Phillip. You'll enjoy the read and it is light and fun. Won't keep you up all night to find out 'who done it' but you'll enjoy the journey anyway.
I found the writing to feel simple (which can be totally fine) but also totally don't care about the characters. They felt flat and annoying, sex starved and cliched. I just couldn't get into this book in any way. The plot didn't feel suspenseful even though there was action, perhaps because I didn't feel any attachment to the characters.
I could see it being a good book for someone else to sit and just ride along with the story but... totally not for me. I think there are other series I like by this author, but I'll definitely avoid this one.
A fun cozy mystery with Jamie Swift and Max Holt. Max has loads of money and electronics at his disposal plus a talking computer in his car. Jamie is a screw up mostly. She tries hard but blunders through life just making it. Together they reek havoc. The mob is after them and they're after a preacher. Keeping secrets from each other doesn't help with their investigation. Can they work together as a team? Can they keep it professional or is their chemistry too much? Can they stay alive long enough for that to be an issue?
This book took me a rediculous amount of time to read-over 2 months. But being an avid Evanovich fan, I couldn't bring myself to just skip it & put it away all together. I just couldn't get into it. The funniest thing to me were the last 5 pages when the dog got "shot" & it was just his tail. This series in general has been disappointing to me. I think the only way I'll get all the books read in it is a long vehicle ride with only this series with to read.
2/5: Why I picked this book up: I picked up two books at the paperback sale to bring with me to Hawai'i. What I liked about it: It fulfilled a couple of challenge prompts, otherwise I might not have finished it, but my options were slim at the time. No more JE for a while. Overall impression: 2.0/5.00, Around the Year in 52 Books prompt: 12. A book that is a collaboration between 2 or more people. Popsugar prompt: A book written by an author who has written more than 20 books (Adv #5).
Evanovich, Janet, and Charlotte Hughes. Full Speed. Full No. 3. Headline, 2003. One ŷ reviewer called Full Speed a “slapstick cozy mystery, which seems just the right term. Max is investigating a corrupt preacher with mob ties. Jamie wants the story for her paper. So, they compete and cooperate while they pant at one another. Muffin, the car, AI is back. So is Jamie’s self-taught tech savant pal. And there is an old pickup truck that comes with a hound named Fleas. 3.5 stars.
Full Speed has all the elements expected from a comedic Evanovich mystery to keep you guessing but entertained all the same time. I love how she and Hughes give perspectives from various characters, so the reader has inside information on everyone the entire time. The best part for me was wondering how the secrets would reveal themselves to Max and Jamie.
I really enjoy Janet Evanovich. This was in a box of books someone gave to me and darn it, I have to try to find the others in the series now. I wish I could have started with book one and had the backstory for the characters, but it was pretty clear what their history was like. Well written and was just fine as a standalone. Though it does make you want to read more. :)
I think I am only reading this series because it's been over 100 degrees for a week now and will be for the rest of the weekend at least. it's OK, that's what two stars means. if it's exactly what you are looking for right this minute it is for me, but the author has improved since this series was written. so don't spend any money buying these books: get them at the library.
