This is the story of a severely wounded WWI soldier. The doctors saved him but all of his limbs were amputated and he was blind and deaf. He is literally trapped inside his body. In this story he tries to come to terms with all that is wrong with him.
This story was originally published in 1939 but was pulled from publication in 1941 as WWII getting started. After the war there was a lot of demand for the book so eventually it was published again.
This story ultimately inspired a very dark and creepy movie that was released in 1971. And in 1988 the band Metallica released their first music video that used a lot that footage from Johnny Got His Gun. And that became a huge anti war anthem. And that was the year that I signed up for Selective Service. That was hard knowing that some rich and powerful people could send me off to fight in a war and how fundamentally changed I could come back home. ...more

This is a loving tribute to a son who is extremely intelligent but may be lacking in some modern sensibilities. The book chronicles the life of the father and an overview of raising his son. And it ends with a parent’s worst nightmare, his son is facing multiple felony charges that could land him in prison for several decades. For me, one of the most fascinating things about this book is that the author is the brother of Augusten Burroughs who wrote Running With Scissors. They would have one crazy family reunion if they all got together. And I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Asperger Syndrome or autism. ...more

This is cute workplace romance at a really unique amusement park. It’s always winter in Florida. There’s lots of ways for the public to experience winter and Christmas anytime they want. But the business is struggling and the employees are given a challenge to try and turn things around. This side project helps give a couple of workers a chance to get to know each other a little better.
I love the idea of a winter wonderland tourist trap. The whole place is kept at 68 degrees all year long. I wish we had one in Phoenix, the only thing we have that’s close to that is the cold storage rooms at Costco.

It was interesting to hear another view of how car design has evolved. The author seems to have a fondness for European cars and included many popular designs. And of course many American cars were highlighted too. The author did a fine job of describing the cars and their design characteristics and I’ve seen most of the cars that were described but there were a few cars that I just couldn’t remember what they looked like and I was wishing that I could see a picture. I guess that’s a problem with audiobooks. I really wouldn’t recommend this audiobook for anyone who isn’t already familiar with automotive design. ...more
