This just came out the other day and it was fun to continue the adventure of Theo, Mia, Nora, and pet ferret Tama. It was interesting to see what direction Nicke was going to go with this volume 4 and like before, they are still in search for the secret of how to control Mia’s magical outbursts. What I like about the style of this particular manga is that it’s not in your face crazy fantastical death and gore all the time. In fact, it is reminiscent of final fantasy. Nicke drops her subtle hints here and there, giving you narrative captions like a video game every now and then. YOU RETRIEVED THIS ITEM. YOU ONLY HAVE 20 MINUTES TO MAKE IT OUT. Clever ploy? Maybe, maybe not. But it satisfies my needs. So thank you.
Sadly, I think that this series is going to leave me behind. I just can't find myself captivated to the story or the characters. It started with a lot of promise and I thought that it could win be back but it's just not doing it for me. Good luck Mia.
This volume my daughter warned me about, and I feel she spoke very accurately. After reading 3 volumes of the journey I felt like this volume takes a pause of the progression. It’s as if there was a contract to produce a certain number of volumes and this was to help meet that obligation. Nicke’s art and story are so engaging that you may even miss that not a lot happens in this volume. But that of course is compared to the previous ones. Doubt, fear, worry and backstories seem to consume the volume. This is the first of the series I did not give a 4-star level. But that also speaks of the quality of this series. Volume 5 is the conclusion and so as I finish this volume, I am keeping thinking that they should make an Omnibus that is slightly larger too. I think if I had to sum up this volume it would be “feelings. I do think the part about chasing your dreams is essential to having a fulfilling life, and so I am not saying there is not value in the story…but this volume felt like a slight pause in the story progression.
While Mia recovers, Theo and Nora continue the search for a magician who can help train Mia. But the town they are in is increasingly a dangerous place for all of them. Nora must confront being a con artist and relates his story to Theo while figuring out if he has the courage to move on and pursue something more noble.
This definitely felt like a filler book in this series. It serves to move us from the big events in the last book on to the next adventure coming in #5 and fills in some back story on Nora. I am always thrilled when we get to the sequences or pages where the artist takes time to let loose with the beautiful nature or town scenes. Nicke is a gifted artist. Looking forward to see where book 5 takes our heroes.
Notes on content: About 3 minor swears if I remember right. No sexual content. There's some precarious circumstances, but they get out of them with clever non-violent methods.
Nora carried the whole volume. Maybe the best volume so far, this series is nowhere near terrible but not super amazing, but still intriguing enough, with good art, and a cool world, to keep me reading. Backstory, character progression without forced drama, all make for a good continuing volume. I actually enjoyed the story here, and want to keep reading. They don't do anything to drastic to make me fall in love, they just sprinkle some good plot elements to keep it worth reading without manipulating the audience. Nothing too crazy- just Theo's backstory (short, and it ends on a cliffhnager), and Mia questioning her past and being a burden. I just really like the feel of this story it's nice and cozy. Sure the story's not mind blowing, but it's enough.
8/22 DNF Chapter 18. While a sweet and magical story, it's rather too contemplative and quiet (even with its occasional bursts of tense action) for me and I just can't maintain interest for the long haul it's clearly set up for. Maybe another time.
Another great volume. We get some back story here from most of the characters and we end with the start of Theo's back story. So looking forward to the next book. I'm sad that Mia didn't quite get to that memory that was so close. And I'm not sure we can trust these new people but we will see...
