A Whiskers and Words Mystery #1

Littered with Trouble

Rate this book
Louisa Henry has had the worst year. She never imagined she would be a widow before the age of forty. To cope with the sudden loss of her husband, Lou moves across the country to live near her best friend in a town as cute as a button. Even though it means quitting her fancy New York editor job, she now owns the bookstore of her dreams.

Well, almost. She definitely didn’t dream about a dead man showing up in her alley.

Found with no identification, the police plaster the man’s face everywhere, along with the name of her bookshop, inundating Lou with negative press before she can even open. Worse, Lou was one of the last people to see him alive, and she didn’t even get his name.

Worried the mystery man’s family is left without the answers she so desperately needed in her husband’s death, Lou tries to help find the man’s identity. On closer inspection, she realizes her conversation with the mystery man was full of clues. Starting with a confusing book page he left behind, Lou follows the trail.

If she can solve this mystery, her bookstore might have a chance at being known for something more than murder.

Eryn Scott

Eryn Scott is the author of heartwarming cozy mysteries. Her novels feature close friendships and strong families because those are the most important things in her life -- a little humor doesn't hurt either.

She calls the Pacific Northwest home and doesn't plan on changing that anytime soon. Eryn loves to hike, horseback ride, knit, ski, and read. She believes musicals are the greatest thing since lattes, even though she's not particularly good at singing or dancing -- hey, a girl can dream, right?

Her first cozy mystery series, Pepper Brooks, is based on some of the greats in classic literature. Each book features a different author from Shakespeare to Austen. Eryn's newest series is set in a little town called Stoneybrook. The Stoneybrook Mysteries follow local jam-maker Hadley James as she solves mysteries in her town's year-round farmers market. From deceased knitters to sabotaged florists, these crafty citizens keep Hadley and her twin brother, a deputy sheriff, on their toes. Pebble Cove Teahouse Mysteries are great for readers who love a hint of paranormal with their mysteries. These books feature a tiny town tucked between craggy coastline and rocky shores with quirky characters of both the living and non-living variety. Look for new releases from all three of these series in 2022 as well as Eryn Scott's new cozy series.

If you love books and cats and a couple of middle aged sleuths, this is for you. I also liked that there was no quick relationship happening between our MC, the cop or any other person! That never happens in a cozy mystery. If Lou ends up with someone, I’d like it to be Noah and Willow with Easton the police man. That’s what I’m hoping for anyway. Quick and fun read.

If you like cozy mysteries in a bookstore and cats are part of the cast of characters, then you will love this book. In the bookstore, our protagonist, Louise, is fostering cats until she finds them their forever home. The characters are relatable and compelling. The mystery is well-written with plenty of twists and turns along the way to the big reveal. This is a great start to a series.

I listened to the audio version of this book. The narrator is wonderful at bringing the story to life. She's excellent at narration because she's great at voicing each character clearly, making the listening experience enjoyable.

All thoughts and opinions are my own; in no way has anyone influenced my opinion.

Louise, better known as Lou has made a big change in her life. After the sudden death of her beloved husband, she takes the life insurance money and moves to the small town of Button. There she plans to renovate a bookstore that is near other small businesses. This puts her near her best friend,Willow, too.
Lou brings along her beloved deaf white cat, Sapphire. She has barely started cleaning and moving in when a strange man comes into the store, even when she tells him that opening day is not for a while. Later when she goes to the back alley, she discovers the same man dead. This starts Lou on the investigation, along with police on why there is so much mystery and animosity revolving around the bookstore.
The author does an excellent job of developing Louise and her friend Willow. The small town is the perfect location and I could almost visualize it thanks to the vibrant descriptions. The secondary characters help to advance the storyline, but there are not too many, so the plot is easy to follow.
LITTERED WITH TROUBLE is the first in a new series from author Eryn Scott. I always love stories about bookstores or libraries. Then cats and kittens that were added in which made this book irresistible for me. The names for the kittens were adorable. I have enjoyed Eryn Scott's other series. This new one has its own unique charm. I am looking for the next novel, TABBY OR NOT TABBY.

This was a fun read! I has books, cats and a mystery to solve. What's not to love about that? I listened to the audiobook and loved the narrator for it. Her narration mixed with Eryn Scott's writing is the perfect (or should I say purrfect) combination!

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

Lou and Ben had always thought that one day, they'd retire and open a bookshop where they would spend all day reading the books that they sell while making money, selling the said books. And it did come to pass, except that Lou had to do it all alone since she lost Ben to a heart attack. But she knew that Ben would certainly approve, although not so much of the dead body that she found behind her new bookshop.

The start of a new series and such an enjoyable read it is. I can see a lot of promising stories from this new cat bookshop with its furry inhabitants and new owner.

cute cozy mystery

This is the first of a series of cozy mysteries set in a bookshop in the small town of Button. Cute story with all the requirements of a cozy mystery: likable main character, a dead person in the first chapter, an amateur sleuth, and a quirky storyline. Enjoyable read…what could go wrong when you combine books and cats and murder.

2022 bk 231. I'll admit it - I bought this one for the cover, but the bookshop / cat adoption theme along with a mystery kept me going. I enjoyed the first in this series about a widow making a new life for herself. It was enjoyable.

Another great cozy mystery series. This one features Louisa who becomes a widow at a young age. She moves away and plans on operating a bookstore. Murder wasn’t in her plans. There’s no stopping until you find out what happened. Ready for the next.

The book cover captured my attention as it reminded me of a greeting card and matching bookmarker that I've purchased. Then I read the title and series name and I knew this was the next cozy I had to begin reading. It didn't disappoint me even for a moment! It's cute, entertaining, and paws-tively charming!

Louisa Henry is a young widow that has left an editorial job in New York to purchase a bookstore named Button Books in Button, Washington. It had been Louisa and husband Ben's dream to open an independent bookstore in a cozy small town. Louisa and Willow had grown up together south of Seattle and Willow is now a horticulture teacher at Button High School. When Willow told Louisa that the current owner of Button Books wanted to sell the store the news was irresistible.

Louisa and her cat Sapphire (Sapph for short) will reside in the apartment above the bookstore. During the day Sapph will also keep Louisa company downstairs in the bookstore. He's a white cat that is deaf but still communicates with his blue eyes, meows, or outstretched paw giving his agreement or approval to Louisa.

The sparkles of this gem
Cover design by Franzi Paetzold added the purr-fect enchantment of introduction to Book 1.
The town has sewing-themed street names and it was a nice touch that the street names varied with extensions of Road, Drive, Street, and Avenue. I’m always appreciative when the author has taken the time to add a map of the small town at the beginning of the cozy.
Detective Easton West is Willow's neighbor and it made me laugh every time I learned of another occasion that Willow's horse OC likes to stretch his neck over the fence to snack on the detective's garden vegetables. It was also fun learning that OC is short for "Of Course" from the television show about a horse named Mr. Ed with the first line of the theme song,
"A horse is a horse, of course, of course."
Additional cats made an appearance in the story and all receive a literary pun name from Louisa.
Louisa’s new name for Button Books.
I don’t include spoilers in my reviews but I’ll just share the teaser that there is a bonus scene to download at the end of Book 1 with an extra-special treat related to cats at the end of the bonus scene.

I loved the opening of this series and I’m looking forward to reading more books in the series as soon as possible.

Louisa is excited to finally open her own bookstore just like she and her late husband once dreamed, but before she’s ready to open, a man turns up dead on her doorstep and it seems life in the sewing-themed town of Button won’t be as cute and cozy after all. Fortunately, Lou still has her best friend Willow and at least a few cats to brighten up her life and help get the new bookshop set up on the right foot.

There were a few distracting copy editing issues in this book, but overall it was exactly as charming as the cover led me to believe it would be. I really want to open my own cat adoption bookstore now, although considering that I’m as allergic as Marigold’s mother, maybe I should stick to visiting bookstores instead. I’ll definitely be getting book 2!

Update: Just finished the audiobook, and it's just as good as I remembered with the addition of sterling narration.

After losing her husband Lou decides to fulfill their life’s wish to open a small town bookstore. So she moves to the west coast town of Button with her cat Sapphire where she purchases said shop and the apartment above. On her first day there she meets a mysterious man who comes in with an odd request then leaves and disappears into thin air. Lou’s new beginning becomes tarnished when the next morning she finds the mysterious man dead in her back alley. Even more confounding is he appears to have been murdered. The townsfolk are friendly and curious, some a bit odd as you might expect in a small town. Curiosity gets the better of Lou and Willow her bff and they decide to try and figure out what happened to the man from the alley. During a run Lou finds a stray kitten and agrees to foster him and then somehow winds up with four more fosters and an idea on how to rebrand the book store; like a cat cafe only a cat bookstore. Danger seems to be hunting Lou as she is caught up in investigating culminating in a surprise ending you won’t see coming.
Great mystery, lots of bookish clues, fuzzy cats and new experiences in a small town.
Lou is endearing and brave to take a chance on a dream even after her personal tragedy. Willow is a fun force of nature bff. Easton is a dedicated cop and very understanding of two amateur sleuths. Definitely a worthwhile read for a cozy fan.

Good

Louisa was widowed not long ago, and left New York and her old life for a new start in the small town of Button in Washington state where her best friend resides. There she plans to open a small bookstore, the culmination to a lifelong dream she has had.
When she stumbles across the body of a man outside her new back door, Lou isn’t so happy with her new life!

This cosy mystery introduces us to a picturesque town, and it’s cast of colourful residents. There’s Lou’s best friend Willow, Easton (Willow’s neighbour and the local detective), and Noah (Easton’s pal and all around nice guy) and that’s just for starters!
Louisa has had a rough go of it recently, so her character is still in mourning, with a couple of tear-jerking scenes.
However, while there are definite melancholy tones to the book at times, there are also periods of happiness most of those admittedly to do with the cats, who have some extremely punny names!
The mystery is intriguing enough to keep you guessing, with some fun literary references for book enthusiasts.

An enjoyable new cosy mystery series for mystery lovers.

What a charming mystery. I enjoyed this short story and am very happy that it was offered as a free read. These tend to be hit and miss stories, most of which I find lacking in value. While they don't cost me any money, they cost me my time which is more valuable to me.
This is the first book in this series of mystery stories involving Lou, the owner of the Whiskers and Words book shop. Lou is learning how to make a new life without her recently deceased husband Ben. She decides to move ahead with their plans of owning an independent bookstore and finds herself involved in a murder the first day she moves into the shop.
I'm eager to follow her progress, partly to see if her best friend Willow finds a new love interest, and to see if all the cats get adopted.
This is one of those books that you should curl up in your favorite reading nook, with a cup of coffee or tea, on a rainy Saturday afternoon with.
Thank you, Eryn Scott, for a delightful read. I'm eager to read the next book in this series.

This is a really fun murder mystery—and I love the fact that the cats on the cover actually show up in the text of the book! The cats aren't just eye candy, but also end up being a big part of the MC's world. I also really appreciated that Lou didn't try to handle the investigation on her own, but generally went to the police for help. (There was only one scene of the typical cozy mystery "I'll solve it myself" nature, which was a refreshing change for the genre.)

I enjoyed the characters in this story a lot, too. I have a feeling there are two romances pending for later books in the series, but luckily they seem to be developing naturally instead of via insta-lust. All of the characters—except maybe for Lou's BFF's ex-fiancé—are nicely rounded and feel very realistic for a cozy. (The ex-fiancé is the only one who feels like the over-the-top characters I've often seen in cozies.)

I'd highly recommend this for fans of cozy mysteries, especially if you're looking for books featuring books and cats in the same spot.

Littered with Trouble is a charming first book in Eryn Scott's new Whiskers and Words Mystery Series. Much to my delight, the word fun begins immediately as the author introduces Louisa Henry, Lou, the new owner of Button Books on the corner of Thread Lane and Thimble Drive in the small town of Button. After the death of her husband, Ben, Lou seeks a quieter, slower-paced life to share with her deaf cat, Sapphire. Unfortunately, her peace is quickly disrupted by the discovery of a dead body in the alley behind her shop/apartment. Why was he "resting"; behind her shop and what's his connection with Button Books? With the help of her best friend, Willow, the search for answers begins.

Enter Scott's series with high expectations for literary appeal and the typical hodgepodge of characters, both two- and four-legged, that entertain throughout.

Excellent!

Some things have to grow on you in order for you to love them. This was such a slow-burning love. Because I had a little bit of trouble getting into it. I felt it was a tad on the serious side at first. But I did enjoy it, felt that it was well-written, good! I did notice that the pages seemed to be turning by themselves. And then, wow, excellent! Slow love can really turn into the best kind of love! What started out good turned into great. Very well-plotted. Technically it was as close to perfection as you can get. Maybe I’d have liked the tone to be just a little bit more lighthearted, but it had such a smooth flow that I found myself completely immersed in the story anyway. Lou notices every detail, and I’m like that too, so that created a bond. That led to detailed descriptions. Lou’s love for the bookstore filled the book with hope, even though there was sadness too. All those positive things won me over slowly but surely! And now I just want more!

Littered with Trouble was a great cozy mystery. Eryn Scott has four cozy mystery series now and I love how each series' heroines, secondary characters, and mysteries all feel unique.

Lou has moved to the small town of Button after buying a bookstore. She lost her husband about a year ago and running a bookstore was a dream they shared. She is also looking forward to living near her best friend Willow. I liked Lou a lot. She is smart, kind, and a good friend. It was sweet seeing her care for the foster cats and finding a way to incorporate them into the bookstore.

This story also did a great job introducing the town of Button and its residents. I am looking forward to getting to know them better in future books. It will be interesting, too, to see what kinds of bookish mysteries Lou will solve next!

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.

Cats and a cozy mystery in a small town

This was a fun story with lots of cats, with literary names like “Romeow (my favorite kitty). Lou is a widow who moves from her job as an editor in NY to a small town in Washington near Seattle. She buys a bookstore but when she arrives, she finds it in serious need of cleaning and restocking. Then the mystery starts as a strange man runs in just after she enters the store and then disappears, only to show up later dead in the alley behind her store. Lou and her best friend Willow go on the trail and discover the previous owner had a lot of secrets that could lead to trouble for Lou.
Recommendation: this was a fun, quick read with good characters (love Noah) and a few dangling threads that let you know there are more adventures to come. A few very minor editorial issues (eves for eaves, etc.) that don’t detract from the overall story. But it does give you a satisfying ending that leaves you smiling. Recommended.

I'll be purrfectly honest, I'm not a cat person, at all. But I was browsing Kindle Unlimited looking for a book that featured books on the cover to fulfill the Buzzword challenge for the month and came across Littered with Trouble. Since it was the first in a cozy mystery series, I decided to give it a try. And I was actually pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the main character, Lou, and her adventures as she settles into her new life in Button, WA. I loved the small-town setting and all the quirky characters that were introduced. I even liked all the cats and their antics. The mystery was well developed and properly sleuthed and *gasp* actually solved by Lou. I'm looking forward to continuing on with this series to watch Lou's new bookstore blossom and see what other mysteries she'll stumble upon.
