After listening to and loving Josh and Gemma Make a Baby by Sarah Ready review last year, I was more than pleasantly surprised to see that Ready had written a sequel. In my mind, I’d already filled in all the blanks of where their story would go after the end of the first book a happily ever after, of course: marriage, a new baby, happy hearts and a smooth ride. What I didn’t expect was that enormous pothole in the middle of their HEA road!

Josh and Gemma, who’s eight months pregnant, are finally at the altar getting ready to exchange their long-anticipated vows when their world goes sideways and all plans for their future are put on hold. Three months later, the world isn’t the only thing that’s changed. The person Gemma was and how she sees the world and everyone in it has too, and it will be the biggest test of her relationship with Josh yet to see if they can find their way through these new challenges and get back on the road to their happy ending.

I’ve seen some reviewers say this sequel wasn’t necessary, and I get where they’re coming from. Most of us read romance for the “feel goods, right? If you’re looking for escapism and warm fuzzies, this may not be your book. If you want a satisfying emotional arc that shows a couple having to deal with real-life problems and find their way through them, it’s perfect! I also loved that it tied up from story threads from the first book - particularly a redemptive arc involving Ian Fortune who everyone loved to hate in the first book.

Despite the heavier topics, there’s a lot of warmth, fun and laughs in this story, a surprising amount of emotional depth and a deeper appreciation of what makes commitment and lasting love work! I loved the audio, once again narrated by the brilliant Erin Mallon. I’d strongly recommend reading the first book before this one, as other readers have discovered it’s harder to feel invested in Josh and Gemma’s relationship without seeing their backstory. If Ready decides to keep their story going, I’ll be right here waiting for the next book!

This is a spoiler-free review from Netgalley

I'm going to start this by saying that a sequel to Josh and Gemma Make a Baby was utterly unnecessary. Yes, I understand that 'happily ever after' isn't very realistic and there will always be ups and downs in life. Those downs, in particular, can reach rock bottom. However, (and hear me out for a minute), I have three thoughts on this sequel:
💥1. Romance novels don't always have to be realistic (especially when it comes to a sweet, wholesome happy ending - for reference read book 1, it was awesome) it's okay to let a story be a story.
💥2. There are just some standalone books that are too beautiful to warrant a sequel, no matter how unrealistically wholesome they were, and writing one kind of ruins the experience.
💥3. There is no need to write a full-length follow-up novel to an already wrapped-up and wholesome story. Novellas are also an option and they are a frequent delight.
Regardless, I still had very high expectations of this book, in spite of its irrelevance. The first book, which I actually got to ARC review as well, was incredible. I loved everything about it. Unfortunately, this one read like a soap opera, and not in a fun sort of way. Everything from the romance to the conflicts, to all the 'notable' quotes, was irritatingly cheesy. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy it at all, I did, hence the three-star rating, there was still some of its previous charm but it wasn't the same.

I'm pleased to say that, in spite of all the cheesiness, the characters were just as lovable as they were in book 1. Although their actions were so questionable at times I found myself face-palming (I know that's not a real word) Poor Gemma had a ton of bs to deal with, not just in her life, but heath-wise as well that I honestly wanted to wrap her in a cosy blanket and feed her cookies. That girl needs a break. She didn't lose that optimism that made her so likable in book 1, however, and ultimately that's part of the reason I kept on reading. Josh isn't much better off, either. He has his own shit to deal with, his life took a dark and unexpected turn, and pretty much everything sucks for him. Similar to Gemma, Josh's optimism and dedication made him an equally likable and sweet character and I love him very much. Also, the guy is super-nice all the time. Even to those who don't deserve it. As for Gemma and Josh's relationship, it took a tumble, things were bad for a while, but their love is strong and can defy all odds. No matter how cheesy that is it's still adorable.

Moreover, I actually ended up reluctantly liking characters that didn't really appeal to me in the first book or I simply outright disliked. Once again, I found parts of this unnecessary because we don't need to like everyone, particularly in books, yet I can't say the newfound depth of some of those characters wasn't a pleasure to explore. It was fun getting to know those secondary characters on a foundational level and learning their stories however minor they were compared to the main plot.

In spite of everything I'd still recommend this book. I had fun reading it and I'm sure a lot of others will as well.

I loved the first book! It really caught me by surprise. I was eager to read the second one!

I listened to the Audio and once again it was an excellent narration by Erin Mallon. She perfectly brings out the character of Gemma!

We left Josh and Gemma in a good place in the first book. Things were finally coming together. I liked the concept of this second book. It was interesting and the turn of events took me by surprise in the beginning. Things wavered a bit in the middle but I still liked this one. I'm not sure if it was needed but their love has certainly been solidified by the telling of this story. As far as a happily ever after one just never knows with Josh & Gemma!

Happy Publication Day!!! 🥳
The first book was too cute! I loved it. This one was not as romance-y as the first and not so much comedy but I read this more as a domestic drama at times.
I did think this was cute in its own way but I suppose I didn’t find it entirely necessary. I went in blind to the sequel so I guess I was expecting the wedding, honeymoon and baby and the challenges that come with those to make a sweet and spicy rom com with some craziness thrown in to mix things up. At times I felt this one almost made me sad. Although it reads just like the first book, it’s very heavy at times.
I was also hoping for A LOT more story of life with the new baby and there wasn’t nearly as much spotlight on the baby as I had hoped there would be.
Also, this might sound a bit critical but the prologue was totally unnecessary. It’s literally brought up in chapter 3. 🤣 That may have been taken out since though as I read an ARC of this.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a cute story. But I don’t think it’s comparable to the first!
A big thank you to Swift & Lewis Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A big hiccup! Will there be a HEA?

I was surprised when I saw a sequel (Thanks Kat!). I remember loving Josh and Gemma's first book and IVF is such an unusual theme for a rom-com that I never thought would make a good plot for this genre but Sarah Ready handled it so well. I would recommend that you read first because this book picks up where the first one left off.

Josh and Gemma the Second Time Around begins with Josh and Gemma's wedding that didn't quite get to the "I DOs". I love the side characters both family and friends who are involved and now with a newborn.

I don't feel there needs to be a sequel to the first novel. I thought this premise was okay but the characters are the best part, especially, the "bad" guy, Ian Fortune! 😍 Friends, this one is spicy!🌶️🌶️🌶

Erin Mallon did a wonderful job with the narration. I flew through this one!

I didn't read the blurb and just requested this one blind because I loved book 1 so much. I was expecting to enjoy this one much more than I did. I mean it was fine, but I wasn't really wowed. There wasn't much rom or com.

I really liked Josh a whole bunch more than Gemma. My heart broke for him. I know that she couldn't help what was happening with her feelings, but there was lack of communication, which I'm not a super big fan of.

Ian is brought back into the story, which was fine, but the reason why puts more of a damper on Josh and Gemma finding their way back to each other. I did like that whole twist though.

Overall, this was just alright for me. I wanted a little more pizzazz. I will read another installment if there is one though.

Series notes:
You definitely should read first.

Narration notes:
She did a fabulous job, as usual.

Josh and Gemma the Second Time Around by Sarah Ready is Book 2 in the "Josh and Gemma" Series.

It's Josh and Gemma's Wedding Day with Gemma walking down the aisle and Josh waiting for and watching, no one other than, his beautiful Bride-to-Be.

Everything is picture perfect. Everyone is smiling and happy. Until the unthinkable happens. Then everything changes...

I loved the first book in this series Josh and Gemma Make a Baby. It was a 5 star read for me and I was super excited to hear about another book with these two adorable main characters. Yay!

Early in, I was surprised by the direction of Josh and Gemma the Second Time Around and I can't express why, other than to say I was expecting a different scenario. It felt off enough to me that I never quite connected to the story. Half-way in I was hoping something twisty or surprising would grab me but it didn't. The story felt...predictable.

I did enjoy the socially relevant topics, the continued focus on relationships and family, several characters from the first book making appearances, and I still love the characters of Josh and Gemma.

Like the first book, I chose the audiobook narrated by Erin Mallon, who once again, nailed the voicing magnificently. Her narration of both audiobooks is one of the best things about this series.

Josh and Gemma the Second Time Around was a book I liked but didn't love. Although I do recommend this book to those who enjoy Rom-Com's, this wasn't a good choice for me.

And just in case you're wondering if the bedroom door is open or closed with this one, it's OPEN fairly wide!

3.5 stars rounded down.

was such an amazing book and should be read prior to reading this one, especially if you really want to appreciate this book fully. I squealed with excitement when I saw this book was available. I just knew I was going to love it. Then as I was listening to the amazing Erin Mallon's narration, I realized things were about to get real. I started getting worried and even said "come on, come on, come on, come on, COME ON! Are you Kidding me? Seriously?????? Noooooo!!!!" Crap! Life gets real, really fast in this book. As with , this one had me feeling several emotions. Sarah Ready created characters that I cared about so when things got real, I felt them.

As the book begins Gemma Jacobs and Josh Lewenthal are preparing for their wedding. They are pregnant and in love. Both have successful careers- Gemma in social media marketing and Josh as a writer of a successful web comic series. They have a bright future ahead of them. Until the day of their wedding when things take a turn. This is where I started pulling on my hair and began my "come on" exclamations. Life is not always easy, in fact, it can be downright, hard.

Josh and Gemma must find their way back to each other. Things will not be the same and they will both be tested. You never learn to get back up until you have been knocked down. So, get back up they do, but will they get back up together?

Ian Fortune is also in this book, and I enjoyed him more the second time around. He gets a lot of 'screen' time in this book, but he does have a part to play. I liked the more human side of him. Readers also get to see Gemma's family as well. Her brother opened his big mouth a couple of times, and I was frustrated that Gemma never let him have it for his insensitivity and rudeness.

This book had me feeling all kinds of things while reading it. Sarah Ready tackles some heavy subjects in this book and the journey for this couple becomes a bumpy one. It's not all doom and gloom, there are moments of brightness, joy and hope. I love the witty banter between Josh and Gemma. It had me smiling and reminded me of how much I loved the first book for their banter and of course, the plot. I also appreciated the emotions shown, the depth of feeling and the doubt that the character's felt.

Again, to fully appreciate this book, I strongly believe you need to read first. Will there be another book? I don't know, but I do know that I enjoyed this book that had my emotions all over the place.

This was equal parts captivating, gripping, shocking, emotional, sad, hopeful, and full of heart.

I enjoyed returning to the world of Josh and Gemma, because we don't often get to follow characters beyond their happily ever after. But to be honest, my first thought when I finished listening to this, was that it was good but unnecessary.
Although everything fits in neatly by the end of the story, I didn't feel the same emotional connection to it as I did to book one.

The first bit of the book dragged on. I think maybe I lost some substance of the book, due to coming in on the 2nd book, not knowing there was a first book. The characters didn't really mesh well for me so I was kind of put off on this one. The second half of the book was alot better with things blending well. I think I would've enjoyed it more if I read the first book first, which I haven't. This just didn't grasp me and I couldn't really get into the characters as much as I'd like to.

I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publishers to read and review. All of the statements above are my true opinions after fully reading this book.

The way this book pissed me off. 🤬

This is a sequel. Did it need to be? NO. If you read the first one don’t even bother with this. Book one does not end on a cliffhanger and it should’ve been left as a standalone.

I hated this plot. Really hated it.

Spoilers will accompany this rant review starting now.

This picks up where the first one left off with Gemma having her baby with Josh and the aftermath. But OH NO she has eclampsia and ends up in a coma for 3 months and when she wakes up SHE HAS NO FEELINGS. Like none, zero. No connection to her baby and she told Josh she feels no love towards him. Her memory is shit too. She forgets things so fast. (She almost set the house on fire trying to make bacon and pancakes cause she turned around and it went *poof* from her mind.)

She wakes up to see Josh on the cover of a magazine with some girl. Enter Lisa. This fucking pointless OW drama was annoying. How shitty of a man do you think your fiancé is to cheat on you while you just had his baby and is in a coma?? JOSH WOULD NEVER. And if she would have had a conversation with him about her this would’ve been cleared up. But no let’s entertain the miscommunication trope. 😡

Speaking of Josh…where was he?? He’s flying out to LA for work every week and is hardly in this book. How you gonna have a plotline of Gemma trying to get her feelings back and love her man IF HE ISN’T EVEN THERE HALF THE TIME??? Ffs.

WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF THE ANTAGONIST IN BOOK ONE BEING IN THIS?? Pointless. So fucking pointless I wanted to pull my hair out. Ian having a redemption arc…whyyyyy? And the gag is GEMMA HAD MORE OF A CONNECTION WITH IAN THEN WITH JOSH. Fucking wild.

And the fact that Ian kissed Gemma so Josh would see it…foul. And let’s not pretend she didn’t kissed him back. That kiss went on for far too long. Oh you won’t kiss Josh cause “no kissing or sex till I love you again but will happily do it with Ian. Josh should’ve thrown you to the curb idc. And then you have the nerve to still hang out with Ian and invite him to family functions??? “He’s my friend and will be in my life GIRL SHUT THE FUCK UP THIS IS SO SHITTY TO JOSH.

In conclusion: fuck Gemma, fuck Ian, and fuck this book.

What the hell was that?! To answer my own question, that was the damn sequel that never ever needed to be written, and to be quite frank, it ruined the first book for me. I don’t even want to recap it, but I’m upset that I just spent two hours reading that. All good feelings after JAGMAB have disappeared. The only good thing out of that is Ian’s redemption and Josh’s never failing love. Fuck the rest.

This book had an interesting concept that I'd not read about before. However, if you read the first book, , you would understand that something unique would have to happen for these two to need a "second time around." I was not 100% convinced of the situation throughout the book, but was happy that Ready addressed some of those issues as the book progressed.

I love Josh and Gemma. They are just the sweetest, most perfect couple really. I would recommend reading the first book first. Without the background in that one, this one would lack something. You will get to meet all the characters in this one and understanding their history is really helpful.

I will admit that some of the explanation for a certain character's behavior was a bit lacking for me, but I was able to overlook that and enjoy the story for what it was. It was nice to be back with Josh and Gemma for a while and I'd like to read more of Ready's work.

I listened to the audio narrated by Erin Mallon and I would definitely recommend it. I tend to speed it up a bit because her narration feels a bit slow to me, but she somehow manages to do a sexy man voice incredibly well.

I loved Josh and Gemma Make a Baby, so was thrilled to read the sequel. This book was even better!

I have grown to adore the characters and was excited to read more of their story. But I wasn't prepared for how heart-wrenching this was. The morning of Gemma and Josh's wedding brings joy and anticipation. But everything comes crashing down when the unexpected happens. Faced with the impossible, can their love survive?

I adored this book. Filled with a good blend of humor, tenderness and tear-jerking moments...I couldn't put it down.

Review in english: This book disappointed me. After the first one I couldn't get into the story and I kept thinking why there is such a sad sequel to their romance. I didn't like where the story went because I was expecting a different one. Unfortunately it wasn't my cup of tea.

This sequel to Josh and Gemma Make a Baby was such a delight. It was refreshing to read a story that continues after the HEA and explored more of the characters back stories. While I was not expecting so much of the story to focus on Ian, I did end up enjoying it and it brought everything full circle in the end. I alternated between the audiobook and e-book and enjoyed both formats; the narrator was amazing!

#1 Josh and Gemma Make a Baby 2.75 stars
#2 Josh and Gemma the Second Time Around 2.25 stars

ugh.. this is not HEA, but Angst Ever After! 😭

this is not Josh and Gemma the Second Time Around because Josh was barely there. this is Gemma’s EX’s Redemption because Ian the Asshole was finally given a character arc, and hes actually not as bad as we thought of him in book 1. him & Gemma were inseparable that Josh felt like the extra instead of the H.

(SPOILER par.) i thought that this would be a marriage in trouble type of story, but not really. Gemma was in a coma for smth. when she wakes up, she suddenly cant feel emotions—no love, no nothing. i thought it was some kinda magical realism BS, but according to the doctor in the book, this condition exists.

so this book is sorta about her dealing with it, and the person who helps her “fix her condition is Ian because he makes her feel (unpleasant) things. meanwhile, Josh couldnt be more of a p*ssy if he tried. 🙄 he cant cope with his new reality, so he bails. i mean, he doesnt leave, but he doesnt fight for her either.

ironically, its Ian who saved the book for me.

Thank you, Swift & Lewis Publishing, for the advance reading copy.

I feel partly it’s my fault for not having read the first book before I picked up this one. I realised it later on that this book is a sequel to Josh and Emma Make a Baby.

But I still feel that such sequels can be read as a standalone as well. I feel the writing just didn’t click with me. I find the first half a bit dragging and I feel the characters aren’t that interesting. Their chemistry just didn’t work. Yes, maybe I should have read the first book.

What did not work for me:

The characters aren’t convincing enough. Their problems are meant to be the main part of the plot here. However, I didn’t feel the gravity of any of their relationship issues. Things went too fast in the second half. I feel we have issues to resolve.

Just didn’t work for me.

This is proof that not every book needs a sequel.
I LOVED Book 1, I thought it was fun and original and it had amazing chemistry between the characters. It also dealt with a lot of heavy subjects in a very respectful way.
Book 2 on the other hand lacks all the good things from book 1: barely any josh, only snippets of her friends which were amazing side characters in book 1, a redemption story that really didn’t need to be there, an a soap opera way to deal with a very delicate situation like is eclampsia that just helped to continuously give us miscommunication when there didn’t need to be one.
I finished this book because I kept hoping it would turn great because I truly truly love book 1, but this book ruined everything about it. So do yourself a favor and read Josh and Gemma Make a Baby and pretend is a stand-alone as it should have remained.

Josh and Gemma the Second Time Around is confusing read. I love the first book. When I saw the second book, I grabbed it without thingking.
Miss Ready seems distancing Josh from the main plot. And he is replaced by Ian. The whole story is focusing on Gemma and Ian.

Mainly Ian. How he became who he is now. What Miss Ready done is to put Ian on the map so her readers feel symphatic toward him.
I want Josh. The goofy, awkward Josh. He is so cute. Sadly I am disappointed with this book.

Not as good as the first one. The first novel gave me Bridget Jones's Diary vibes and it was hilarious. This one didn't feel as necessary nor did it offer anything new. It has the same formula as most rom-com and I'm looking for something more as an avid reader.

Overall, decent read but nothing mind-blowing. If you're new to rom-com, then give this novel a try.

*Can be read as a standalone.*

It's not often we get to follow characters beyond their happily ever afters. Sure, we may get a glimpse through other books in the same series, but what really happens, especially when the happily part seems to vanish in the blink of an eye?

Josh and Gemma Lewenthal look like a couple who has it all. They're head over heels for each other, they love their jobs and have a fantastic apartment in the city. They're expecting their first baby in six weeks, and they’re driving upstate to Gemma's parents' home for their charming, intimate backyard wedding. But then the bottom falls out.

Josh tries to manage his career, flying between New York and Los Angeles, while parenting their baby, Hope, and being there for Gemma. And Gemma? Gemma is lost. No one knows if she'll come back to them or what her condition will be if she returns. These are the things that test the mettle of love. Does it keep the promise of forever? Can it still survive when the one you promised to love turns out to be someone different?

With a quirky, loving family and a major supporting role from the infamous Ian Fortune, we get plenty of wit, humor and comic relief through this second part of Josh and Gemma‘s story. But the more somber, harrowing, unvarnished parts of their story are the ones that will grip your heart and dash your soul. They’ll make you think and open your eyes as you watch Josh and Gemma navigate challenges you never imagined possible.

As we go on this journey with them, we see that love is a big, wonderful, happy feeling, yes, but it's so much more. It's the choice and fortitude and unwavering determination to stick when life gets too hard and challenges get too big. It's also the joy and delight and reverence of the simple things, the seemingly insignificant moments, and the smallest blessings.

Even in fiction, a writer's best work is always when they dig deep within, acknowledge their vulnerabilities and them pour them into their work, and Ready has bared her soul to us. This is a profound, special read. One that will touch you deeply and, I hope, make you even more grateful for the things in life we all too often take for granted.

Our language is too deficient to express how truly extraordinary this one is. Easily one of my all-time favorite reads and one I'll return to again and again, I encourage you to grab this one ASAP and start reading. You’ll laugh, you'll cry, you’ll feel everything in between, and your romantic heart will be changed this second time around.

This book continues the story of Josh and Gemma who are preparing to get married, but things don't go as planned for there is this unexpected turn of events that made Gemma doubt her feelings for Josh.

I really like that the author had provided some background why the series' antagonist acts the way that he does. This can be considered as one of those traditional happily ever after stories, but if you just want to have a good time this series is worth giving a try.
Thank you, NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I loved this !

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Swift and Lewis Publishing for my advanced audio copy of Josh and Gemma The Second Time Around!

Going into this audio I was slightly afraid that I wouldn’t enjoy this second installment of Josh and Gemma as much as the first.
As you can tell by my star rating that is not the case!

This book was a lot of fun. As the synopsis says there were lots of twists and turns. I enjoyed all of the surprises for the most part. Some of them a little far fetched but this is fiction.

I loved every single character. Even Ian Fortune.

I loved the continued romance of Josh and Gemma.

I loved the narration of this book. Erin Mallon Is amazing.

I loved the end of this book.

Overall- highly recommend. I will definitely be reading more by this author.

Read & reviewed for Netgalley.

I LOVED this book. I never knew about the first one in this series and I'd never heard of this author before. This can definitely be read as a standalone. I expected this to be an average romcom (because sadly lately I've stumbled on to many of those). It was NOT what I expected. The twists and turns alone are reason enough to read this book but from a "Romance" genre perspective, the author tears your heart out and puts it back together very slowly, while you hold your breath. Excellent emotional yet spicy read! I'm going to look for more from this author!

"Josh and Gemma The Second Time Around" by Sarah Ready is a delightful read, even though it's not exactly what fans were expecting. After the success of "Josh and Gemma Make a Baby," many of us were eagerly anticipating the next chapter in their love story, where they would navigate the joys and challenges of parenthood together. But, instead, we're thrown a curveball when Gemma is diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and falls into a coma.

While this plot twist may have been unexpected, it's a testament to Ready's skill as a writer that she's able to make it work. The story is a powerful exploration of the resilience of the human spirit and the strength of the bonds of love and family. In an experiment that will be interesting for anyone who has ever wondered what happens after the happily ever after.

This is a very sweet continuation of the first book, maybe it wasn't absolutely needed, but it was definitely fun spending a little more time with these characters again.

Everything finally feels great. Josh and Gemma are getting ready for their wedding, they have a baby on the way. Everything's how it should be, till moment when Gemma faints at the altar and falls into coma for 3 months. When she wakes up, she doesn't have feelings anymore.

How to act the moment you realize you don't love or feel anything towards your mum & dad, your baby and fiance? Can relationship work out or it's a dead end? Can one person actually have love for both of them in the relationship?

Just like the last book, I loved this one. Yeah, the beginning dragged on a little bit, but the story is so interesting. Even shead a tear or two. In this story you hope for "happily ever after" kind of ending, but also get ready for the worst, because it's not fairytale type of writing, it's very realistic without any clichés. I loved it! 💕

For every broken heart there is a captivating journey. Sarah Ready takes emotions on the ultimate wild ride with Josh and Gemma. From quirky romance to haunting love story, what develops into wrought iron finds itself teetering on broken glass. The beauty of storytelling is not the story itself, but the way it makes you feel. Through every bump and bruise, there is always a glimmer of something beautiful. Josh and Gemma: The Second time Around takes life by the heart and exposes it's soul.
