Yes, however he does return in Scarlet (the unofficial sequel) and stays. It's outrageous.
Well, it was written from her notes, so it's kinda sorta a little written by her. But Gone With the Wind is infinitely better.
Lori, i think you are right. In my opinion author did it in order to show that Scarlet was very selfish and self-confident to see that she loves Rhett

Hhhmmm I'm not so sure. I know Mitchell requested all her notes born in her will which her hussband did after her death and she refused Selznick's request to write a sequel no matter how much he pleaded.
I honestly believed Mithcell intended the story just to end upon Rhett's leaving and I can see why. One of the most powerful magic of Gone With the Wind is the heartache and sense of regret you feel from the conclusion. I never finished Scarlett adn attempt to read it again but I recall how much Gone Witht he Wind was not as powerful as it was because of the happier tone Scarlett put out (perhaps Scarlett was even a reason why I lost all itnerest in Gone With the Wind until Fall 2012 when I read Linda Goodman's Sun Signs).
