Nancy 9 years old?? A reader needs to have WWII history background, as in having read several other books, to even begin to understand the what and why of these girls being in the war and being in France. Then there is the German Nazi cruelty, the shootings, guillotining, the cruelty, the hunger, the TORTURE. NOT appropriate for children, unless you want them to be confused and have nightmares.

Calligraphie I mean...I read 1984 in grade school, so it really depends on the kid.
