I thought Mabel's life was fascinating, as was the history of the cirucs. Interesting book."

Well, to me it is in this group because of the relationship with the tiger. I haven't reread it yet, but her self-destructive relationship with injuring herself with it's claws and teeth and masturbating against him. I think that borders of bestiality. Plus the fact that her love for the animal was a real barrier in her ability to love her husbands.

Regardless if it counts or not it's an amazing book. Hard to believe those ice baths for hysteria weren't really that long ago.

64986 Wow, interesting, see I find her self obsessed nature totally believable for a 13/14 year old girl. I kept wanting to villinize Robin and Oliver but the role of the father is what really interested me. His pervasive abuse and the way he's turned his children in to abusers really struck me. The way the narrator sees her mother and herself is a taught behavior and the guilt/shame she feels based on just a frown from her father is classic. Add that to the relationship the father develops with Dawn and it's really creepy. He's replaced his daughter when she disappoints him. I found the story to be about the effects of his abuse. And was struck by how at the end, Oliver, as fucked up as he was, seems to be the only one to actually care about her.

64986 Well I love the book, it feels like the inside of a young abused mind to me. Hope you guys like Mabel Stark better. For me in PURE, the point was that there wasn't a concrete conflict. It's a mood piece about immersing yourself in this terrible young life.

So my question for you guys is, who is the antagonist?

64986 I'm about a third into PURE and it's definitely not the best written piece I've ever read but it does pull me in. I'm enjoying reading it again.

64986 For March there is no limit on what book or how many books you may review. All you need to do is explain in your review why this book qualifies as "questionable content."

Please post links here to your reviews on GoodReads.

Remember you get 1 additional point for everywhere you post a review including: Amazon, B&N, Smashwords, your blog, etc. but you have to post the link here so I know to count it.

Thanks!

March Sponsor (1 new)
Mar 04, 2012 08:24AM

64986 March's open reading of any book you would like is sponsored by Sessha Batto. Sessha has generously offered not only to help fund 1/2 of this month's prize (a new copy of Pure be Rebbecca Ray) but also to give away a copy of both books in her Shinobi Series. Goodluck! I will post the entry page for this month's giveaway separately.

Shinobi, Book One Concealed in Shadows by Sessha Batto
In modern day Japan, the ninja legends live on in a grim saga of political maneuverings, betrayal, sexual abuse, torture and dark homoeroticism.

The Shinobi clans lurk in the shadows, performing services that not even the hardened Yakuza will touch. Takahashi Yoshi fulfills his duty with soul-stripping resolve, each assignment driving a nail into a coffin of lost faith. After years of sexual abuse and torture in the name of clan honor, Yoshi must learn to trust, but the man who offers him hope is himself flawed. Sasaki Makoto has spent a career in torture and interrogation, exploring not only the dark secrets of his clan’s enemies, but also the darkness within his own heart.

How far must Yoshi run to escape his shame and torment?

64986 I THINK it's fixed now. I deleted the entire admin file and uploaded a clean copy, deleted all the widgets and reinstalled. I hope this makes it better. Please let me know if you have any more problems. This is such a disaster, I'm really sorry.

I'll go check out the plugin now.

64986 awesome! I often wonder what kind of sickos read my novella :) Of course I wrote it! Let's hold this for our December Poll.
Feb 28, 2012 04:51AM

64986 Still not sure what to read for March... Hmmm... I was considering Wicked because of the sex scene in the club, but now I'm thinking I need something Indie.
Feb 26, 2012 08:58AM

64986 A Game of Thrones ..."

Yes, someone else mentioned that to me recently. We should include it in the poll for what book to read in December. Thanks for the recommendation!

64986 Wytchwmn75 - yes, Europe is VERY different. Much like gov't officials not being castrated for having mistresses. Sex isn't as dirty there. Thanks Protestants! :)
