I thought that this book was great, especially the main character. I loved the whole voting thing; it was great that what happened in the voting booth remained a bit of mystery. I especially liked how different this novel was, stylistically, from The Zero. My only complaints are that some of the imagery repeated between these novels, which I thought was a bit lazy, and I thought that there wasn't very good balance between the cop and the crook. This was quite a good book. I hated putting it down. Walter's captures that hopeless petty criminal trying to go straight and all the things that go against him. Set against the Reagan-Carter election which does a nice job of contextualizing Vince's plight.

If anything, this one was better than The Financial Lives of the Poets. I'm really enjoying Jess Walter. Engaging, intelligent writing and an interesting story on top of it. I'm hooked.
