So many things to enjoy about this book. I loved learning about video games and their creation. Zevin鈥檚 writing is so good鈥攁llusions, characters, friendships, interesting narrative styles. The second half of the book, in LA, slowed down and I was sad about the miscommunications in Sadie鈥檚 and Sam鈥檚 lives. But real life, nonetheless.

What a love letter to stories, games, the joy of solving puzzles, and relationships even those between flawed people. Funny enough, I have just gotten sucked into the world of playing Persona 5 and reveling in the world building and characters. Felt I had not been reading as much so picked this up on a day where I decided to take a break鈥� and just feel like it was such an emotional ride to be a part of these characters鈥� worlds and lives. Even after finishing, I feel like I can鈥檛 talk to some 4.5.

What a love letter to stories, games, the joy of solving puzzles, and relationships even those between flawed people. Felt I had not been reading as much so picked this up on a day where I decided to take a break鈥� and just feel like it was such an emotional ride to be a part of these characters鈥� worlds and lives. Even after finishing, I feel like I can鈥檛 talk to someone else right away or it breaks the spell鈥� :p

This brings me back to a part of childhood and how much my brother and I connected over games. How we played the game said so much about our relationship then (often finding cheating ways to trade resources with each other in games that were meant to be competitive) and how our love of video games and board games is something I can always count on him to be as into as me. I hadn鈥檛 ever seen a book before that captured how much books and games can do for people鈥� especially in a time post-pandemic.

鈥淢aybe it was the willingness to play that kept one from despair鈥�

I can definitely see this friendship as being one that鈥檚 complex and full of love and history鈥� even when there is so much hidden and not spoken to the other鈥nd despite the that were sometimes spoken and really cruel鈥� they were tied together in so many ways of showing love and friendship and yet it was refreshing to see a partnership honored that didn鈥檛 have to become romantic (even if love was there) to be important. I don鈥檛 think the anger and hurt between them detracted from the other aspects of their relationship but it did make it heartbreaking to see where the walls related to trauma and loss could lead the individuals to question whether they we were loved or others鈥� motives鈥�

Marx鈥檚 love for Sam was so beautiful that I can鈥檛 even be annoyed that he is a character seemingly without flaws. After all, we are told that he is an NPC so it鈥檚 a little funny to see reviews of the book complaining about him just being used to push along the plot and story related to the other two.

The only thing I disagree with in regards to reviews is this book being one I could imagine everyone loving even complete non-gamers. I鈥檓 sure some will, and maybe it will get some to understand the gamers in their lives- but a part of the magic for me was the world created here that involves a deep love of storytelling and the wonderful ways you can communicate and feel through games (and books) so I do see this story might be a no go for some people. ...more

A quick and easy read, but nonetheless with some depth - left me thinking about a lot of things. As the author states, it's a book about work and love. It's also about a particular moment in the in the software industry, when almost anything was possibe. ...more

This was a beautiful exploration of friendship and the creative process between friends and how complicated that can be. And women, minorities, and disability in gaming. Some gut punches along the way. Loved this, even if it meandered now and then.
