4.5/5 This book gives me all the right emotions of reading fantasy, and it reminds me of why I started reading in the first place. R.F. Kuang has packed so much conflict and politics in this book, which somehow does not mask the awaiting events. I adore a fantasy book that can mix grimdark with historical fiction in such a smooth way, and The Poppy War went above and beyond. made me question life and stabbed me in the gut amidst doing so. that ending destroyed me and idk if i can ever enjoy life again (i鈥檓 being dramatic but that鈥檚 how i feel right after finishing, sue me).

ive never heard of the Opium Wars and i鈥檓 honestly ashamed of never being taught about it. now, i will remedy that by researching the Rape of Nanking. Kuang recommends in the authors note titles of books to inform you of this historical period that i intend to try out (might i add, she sounds lik made me question life and stabbed me in the gut amidst doing so. that ending destroyed me and idk if i can ever enjoy life again (i鈥檓 being dramatic but that鈥檚 how i feel right after finishing, sue me).

The Poppy War hides no dark war aspects, period, and if it鈥檚 too much for you to handle (very understandable, there鈥檚 many trigger warnings), then maybe this isn鈥檛 the book for you. albeit it was a bit too much for me at times in parts 2 and 3 and all the talk of genocide and rape and torture, etc, but it felt so important that it didn鈥檛 shy away from those things. i feel we become so desensitized to the topics of war when we learn it in school that we don鈥檛 fully realize the effects of it because we didn鈥檛 experience it for ourselves. with The Poppy War you鈥檙e at the forefront of everything, seeing it all, reading it all, and getting attached and you can鈥檛 look away, you鈥檙e absolutely enamored, glued to your seat, feeling it.

i became so attached to rin. i feel this is a common occurrence among most people that loved the poppy war. i couldn鈥檛 help thinking that, for her character, a lot of her actions made sense. like, SHOULD she have done certain things? no. but ofc she did them cuz the story would be boring if she didn鈥檛. she鈥檚 just so angry, so ruthless, scarred, driven, stubborn, flawed... i couldn鈥檛 help liking her, feeling bad for her. i hope she doesn鈥檛 end up like Altan, succumbed in rage and darkness that she can鈥檛 get out of.

like i said in an update before, i hate altan. i feel bad for him, but he was terrible to rin 99 percent of the time and i love rin so i automatically hate him.

they weren鈥檛 much in this book, but kitay and nezha were also very interesting. rin and kitay had a very deep friendship and bond that was probably the only heartwarming aspect of this book, next to her relationships with jiang and nezha. i loved her banter with jiang, her crazy and surprisingly wise teacher whom i love wholeheartedly, and nezha, her enemy-turning-to-friend.

i think this, however, just started me on a fantasy high and i will be reading tons of fantasy starting after i immediately pick up the dragon republic

p.s. i love u nezha, jiang, ramsa, and rin, you can step all over me anytime you鈥檇 like as long as you three are happy in this world ...more

Nikan is in an uncomfortable cease-fire with Mugen, the longbow-shaped island across the waves (an allegory for Japan) and in the meantime they send their strongest and smartest cadets to S Rating: A-

The Poppy War is a military fantasy book set in an unusual setting for those steeped in fantasy; China. The story follows Runin Fang, a war orphan adopted by an abusive family who traffics opium secretly. She grows up with them in the Rooster province, the southern-most part of the country of Nikan. Nikan is in an uncomfortable cease-fire with Mugen, the longbow-shaped island across the waves (an allegory for Japan) and in the meantime they send their strongest and smartest cadets to Sinegard to become soldiers. Rin decides she's going to ace the Keju and go to Sinegard to escape the domestic life that awaits her if she stays.

What comes is an unexpected, dark and enjoyable story about Rin's journey to become a soldier and discovering her past and what lengths she will go to to achieve her goals. She is fiercely patriotic despite the country giving her nothing but shit, and has a desperate need to prove herself in the brutal halls of Sinegard. I really loved the first two parts of the story, learning about the Pantheon of the gods and going through the school setting. Inevitably, war comes as the ceasefire is broken and we follow Rin through her part in the war with Mugen alongside her classmates from Sinegard and the Cike, the mysterious 12th battalion that serve the empress.

I enjoyed meeting the supporting characters again and liked seeing how they realised how meaningless the fights at school were. I felt, however, that as the book went on, Rin became less and less rational and likeable. This was the point of the story but I couldn't support her decisions. I felt more removed from the story. Additionally I read that the story really draws very heavily from real events in China and Japan's military history. Less this story is inspired, but directly draws in historical events from WW2. It is a blend of historical events and even older technology.

I think there is potential in the next books and I may even continue on with the series, but the ending of this book really soured the first 2 parts for me. ...more
