The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo is fierce and powerful, sad and tragic, yet hopeful. Xiomara Batista must follow all the rules--Mami's, church and confirmation class, school and teachers, and society in general.
Xiomara is desperately trying to figure out who she is and where she fits into the world around her. The messages from her parents, school, and society are all crashing into her at once. She's finding her voice, yet she's either unheard or expected to stay silent. As a result, she writes ...more

read it read it read it or even better listen to the audiobook.
it was magnificent. i cried in so many parts, i need to buy the physical copy to write down everything in my journal.
i'm not the biggest fan of poetry - so if you aren't too - trust me, pick it up. it was worth it.
there's a reason why so many people hyped this book last year and it deserves all the praise.
i would die to have a book about xiomara's brother.

i’m sure this is just as great and just as powerful in written format, but the audiobook was absolutely amazing. i definitely recommend it to anyone able to listen to it!

This book was such a surprise for me. I was a little hesitant because it is written in verse but this hit me on so many levels. This book was a journey and a reminder for me of things that I forgot in my own experiences. It had me in tears a few times and is an incredible read! Highly recommended!
