This is, indeed, a beautiful book. Beautiful photographs (141 of them!) and beautiful writing. The author visited lots of exotic locales, and found lots of interesting specimens to photograph and write about. It is almost a travelog, but much more. The book describes what we know about the evolutionary history of organisms--mostly animals, and how we have learned about it.
