Carson uses lyrical prose to narrate her world. Its wildly fascinating and exhibits a degree of pragmatism that is very alien to the era. She talks about oceans getting polluted by garbage, the immense nature of oceans in general and the way the entire humanity seems to be connected by water. Science has advanced enough to out date some of her theories but the fundamental aspect of her book, the oceans, are still relevant.

The Sea around us explores ocean currents, the history of humans traveling on the sea, tides (my favorite section) and waves, the creation of the ocean and our atmosphere and things of that nature. I did get a few new interesting facts out of it, but a lot of this I already knew. I liked that it looked at the ocean from an interdisciplinary perspective.
