A meditation on the mysteries and the cultural and personal significance of eels, this book is beautifully written and unexpected. A reader expecting a dense and methodical exploration of the science and situation of the eel will be disappointed; rather, this is a diffuse summation of what is known and unknown about eels, complete with dreamy tangents and personal recollections. Svensson has brought us both a pleasing memoir and an inspiring natural history. Who knew that so many prominent (and I mean PROMINENT) peopel throughout history involved themselves with the eel? The writing is as fluid as a juvenile eel swimming in the current. I enjoyed every word and received the added bonus of new (to me) knowledge. Highly recommended if you like animals, ecology, puzzles (yes, puzzles), history and science.
