Really excellent beach reading. A story that I had never heard of before, but which was a sensation at the time. It is the story of the Arctic Polar Expedition launched in 1879 aboard the U.S.S. Jeanette commanded by George DeLong (who the DeLong archipelago in the arctic sea is named after). The expedition was launched at a time when theories about what the North Pole contained were varied and usually ill informed. Can one read too many accounts of polar exploration? No. This was particularly interesting in the way that Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison and John Muir figured into the story.

Comprehensive and well written of the unsuccessful polar expedition of the 1880's.

Most compelling in its description of the hardships of the crew of the USS Jeannette: sent on a ill conceived search for warm polar seas, the crew were trapped in polar ice, shipwrecked, marooned on the ice cap before trekking and sailing thousands on miles to Siberia.

After listening to this audio tape, I have decided to erase "Go on an Arctic Expedition" from my bucket list. Ain't no way I'm gonna evva do that. And if you are thinking of mounting such an excursion, please refrain from asking me to join you as a crew member.
