This is a marvelous book about the consequences of a population being scientifically illiterate. There are numerous consequences, all of them bad. Most notably, the growth of superstitious beliefs can lead to terrifying witch hunts that grow and grow, leaving a broad trail of torture, execution, mass hysteria and paranoia. Interestingly, Carl Sagan holds up science and democracy as mutually supporting concepts. He cites Frederick Douglass, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson as examples of l ...more

I probably would have loved this book if I had read it when it was newer, and when skepticism was newer to me. But conspiracy theorists and faith based belief systems have expanded and meandered since the writing of this book, so the fixation on UFOs and religion in the first 60% of the book grows tiresome. And I must admit to getting weary of the endless elaboration, however articulate, of the concept that evidence really, no really, is just all we've got to go off of for determining truth. I m ...more
