A Secret Cavalry was about angels from heaven doing good on earth through human hosts. These hosts would then have remarkable powers and for a time, the celestial being and the mortal would almost become one with another. This book explores such an idea from multiple points of view and during multiple time periods (past, present, and future).

The action, mystery, and suspense of this book was really good, it kept me reading and wanting more and I was always invested in what was happening. The action, mystery, and suspense of this book was really good, it kept me reading and wanting more and I was always invested in what was happening. Also, especially with the first part, it really made me want to do more to help make the world a better place as well. This book proved not only to be simply an enjoyable read but also bore an empowering message calling the reader to action.

I thought the transitions to new characters was really well-done, although if I鈥檓 going to be honest, I expected all of the main characters to meet up together once they were all introduced and that turned out to not be so. However, I think that was because each host was kinda "assigned" to different sectors so naturally, they would work separated from one another.

The book basically has three parts: the first goes through the journeys of multiple hosts in the present day, the second goes back in time (to biblical days, I believe), and the third is set in the future.

I do have three complaints about this book, though. The first is simply the writing style. I know that this is the author鈥檚 first novel and he does indeed have a vivid imagination, but the execution of the story is a bit crude. Most everything is told, as if out of a history textbook, instead of shown, and the dialogues are mostly either back and forth, back and forth, and back and forth some more in really short sentences or it is in huge paragraphs of unending speech. So that was a bit choppy but the story itself was still quite exciting and the humor (especially with Gabriel!) was amazing. The second complaint is just that there were quite a few grammatical errors (mostly homophones) that were quite distracting when they appeared. This could鈥檝e been fixed pretty efficiently by an editor or by diligently going through the text and fixing those errors. The third thing is that a lot of the time, the writing is (like I said before), choppy, with there being unfinished sentences all over, which would've sounded much better with commas separating the phrases instead of periods (e.g. "Soon these random events of disruption began to increase exponentially. All in order to distract and confound the powers that be. In addition to simultaneously undermining their public approval. A term Armaan and his team coined, The Glitch.") This technique is totally okay if used once or twice for emphasis but when used over and over again, it becomes tiring. Those are the three reasons for the 4-star rating.

Overall, this was a pretty quick and easy read. If you love action and adventure mixed with some mystery and suspense (and angels) then this book might just be for you!

A Secret Cavalry is a short collection of guardian angel stories, where an angel's spirit merges with a human body under duress (nonresponsive comas, deeply flawed people), granting them a "second chance" to do good in the world. The angels engage in an inner dialogue with their hosts, and follow a strict moral code ("no killing", "no mention of our bond", etc.) to only do good, never evil.

The stories that follow are far-ranging, but all follow the same format - a human is granted the powers of A Secret Cavalry is a short collection of guardian angel stories, where an angel's spirit merges with a human body under duress (nonresponsive comas, deeply flawed people), granting them a "second chance" to do good in the world. The angels engage in an inner dialogue with their hosts, and follow a strict moral code ("no killing", "no mention of our bond", etc.) to only do good, never evil.

The stories that follow are far-ranging, but all follow the same format - a human is granted the powers of telepathy, extreme strength, speed, flight, night vision, fighting skills, enhanced hearing, etc. - just overnight, as part of their covenant with an Angel that merged with them. But as soon as a human is able to walk out of their hospital bed for the first time in years, they suddenly hear a child dying, or a life-threatening fire miles away. And they teleport there and try to save them, every single time. The plot individually would make for a beautiful action-packed superhero series, but in A Secret Cavalry, just about every story seems to end with the host breaking some rules set by the Angel, or committing self-sacrifice, and the angel reluctantly leaves the host. Each story is painfully short, with the exception of the last host, Thomas Robby Robinson.

The final few chapters follow the merge of Thomas Robby Robinson, a homeless man living in the gutter, and the angel Michael. Michael just appears and asks him if he would like to do good for the world, and they merge as if there was nothing strange or otherworldly about it. They then matter-of-factly foil an evil mastermind attempting to take over the world with advanced technology, save more lives around the world, and fight evildoers as they attempt to harvest organs from the homeless. The story of Thomas Robinson then goes into some scattered directions. His story diverts into trips to 1) a soccer game, which he had never been to 2) a nursing home where he meets an old relative 3) Finland, where the doomsday device that he foiled from taking over the world is now being fought over by several nations. The ensuing conflict over a piece of doomsday technology, capable of disarming the electrical grid and putting humanity into the Dark Ages, becomes a point of climax for the story - we see angel-human hosts engaging in supernatural battles to take this technology, until it seems the only way forward is to completely disable it from humanity forever.

The book is a cross between "Chicken Soup for the Soul" and some superhero cartoon. The writing is disorganized and scrappy, and it legitimately feels like a story some high schoolers in a creative writing class could have put these stories together. Readers should be warned that this book requires pushing through poorly written sections that were done without any particular style, flow of ideas, or even good grammar/spelling. In short, this book reads like a rough draft that should have been edited two or three times by a qualified editor, although by the book's end the writer seems to get into a better rhythm. By story's end, we see a hero emerge in Thomas Robinson as he sacrifices his life to save people from World War III - and his angel, Michael, offers some powerful lamentations on the good such a man's life choices made in helping the world.

I put the book down immediately thinking more about the premise - angels merging with humans, granting them the power to do the Lord's work? Is that how guardian angels are supposed to work? A few good questions follow : If humans did have the powers of the heavens at their fingertips, what would they do with it? Considering how many angels had to leave their hosts, and how quickly humans seemed to overstep the boundaries of the agreement, are the two realms even compatible to begin with? Why couldn't angels grant their hosts the power to save people that suffered traumatic injuries, who were about to die? With all the evil and hurt in the world, does this angel-host heroism even matter? Or is it really a small drop in the bucket? ...more
