This was my first buddy read ever (with my best friend @Maddie) and it was SO FUN! Not even going to lie, I really kinda hated this book when I read it two years ago. I didn't even move onto the rest of the series. It was my first book by Stephanie Garber and I despised how flat and confusing the book was. BUT BOY WAS IT NOT FLAT THIS TIME AROUND. Confusing, a little. But flat? No. The whole magic of Caraval is meant to be confusing as hell, so if you know that going into it ...more

At this point, this book is must-read/gateway ticket for the YA Fantasy genre. What I mean by that is, if you like YA Fantasy, this book should be on of the starting books you read. Or at least, that’s what I’ve heard from other people. I’ve been avidly reading YA, especially Fantasy, for 2 and a half years now, and I still haven’t got around to this book, until this month.
I wouldn’t say this book is bad, based on my rating, but I was also a bit disappointed. I’ve had this book recommended ...more

I enjoyed so much. My first book of Stephanie Garber and It was a great start.
The story is a whiplash of emotions, multiple twists is a short spam of time. You have to pay a lot of attention, if not you are dead.
The world of Caraval is amazing. Scarlet was so great (a few times I fell so bad for her) and Julian was so cute.

Honestly I don’t think I was in the right mood for this the first time I read it, I don’t think I retained enough of it bc of a book hangover.
Genuinely loved it. The characters were great (Julian my love 🫶🏻) and I liked the intrigue! I’m usually not super into mysteries but this one had so many twists and turns I was engaged.
The only thing I didn’t quite grasp was the world building. I did not really understand the layout of this island.
The game was also a little strange. I guess i ...more

Re-read review: 4/5 stars
When I initially read this book, I gave it 5 stars, but now that I've read Once Upon a Broken Heart I keep comparing it 🥲
I still love Caraval, the characters, the plot, etc., but I feel like compared to OUBH it's more juvenile (which makes sense since Garber wrote it prior to OUBH)
Anyway, I still love this book, and I'd definitely recommend it bc it's a super easy read! The audiobook is also an amazing way to read it and gives the book some more magic! ...more
