i don't think this was an offensively bad book. but it wasn't all that AH-MAZING either. there were some parts i loved, but most of it didn't meet up to my HIGHH expectations.
i think my biggest mistake was going in with big expectations. will i ever learn? no. hehe
we all know how this book was one of the biggest, most sensational reads of 2023. everywhere readers were raving about how much of a masterpiece this is and how romaniris have the most groundbreaking, heartwrenching love story.

to be completely honest, I didn’t love this one as much as I hoped I would. the writing was beautiful and the romance was really sweet but sadly I was bored for most of the book. it started out promising and I loved roman and iris’s banter. then the plot started to slow down around page 100 and nothing was really happening. the two things I really loved were the romance and roman😩 he is the definition of ‘in a world of boys, he’s a gentlem ...more

Descriptive, engaging and interesting, Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross is about two young people who are rivals at the paper and living in an age of war among gods.

initial thoughts:
- objectively one of the best books i’ve read in this genre
- roman is such a fcking sweetheart, like he asks permission for everything, and just treats iris like a queen
- iris is so strong. how does she go through all of that and still manage to live?
- the world building is simple yet amazing
- i felt alllllllll the feels
- the middle dragged a little because i wasn’t that interested in marisol’s story line
- the climax was amazing
- some of the best writing i’ve ever encountered

3.75 stars. I liked it but I didn’t love it as much as I hoped I would. I cried a few times though so that is a good sign. I did love reading their letters to each other, I liked Roman and how much he cared for Iris, and it was a good love story, but I just think it was a bit too YA for my liking. But I mean he did quit his job and travel 600km through a war zone to be with her. And he CRAWLED to her when he was in pain and couldn’t walk anymore. What more could I ask for? I do have higher hopes
