Teenage Sunny doesn't feel like she fits in anywhere. Born in America, she and her family moved back to Nigeria several years before the story begins. Neither American enough nor Nigerian enough, she also draws a lot of unwanted attention to herself because she is albino. After a couple of her peers befriend her, she learns that they -- and she -- are witches, and she again gets to feel like she doesn't quite belong as she tries to fast-track her education about the magical realm and her powers.

I couldn't read this book without comparing it to Harry Potter - there were so many parallels. This one was somewhat lacking in description, and sometimes that made it feel more like I was listening to a story being told than actually being drawn into it. But in a way, that was part of the beauty of this book. What it lacked in descriptive depth, it made up for in cultural depth. I think I heard it described as Harry Potter meets Hayao Miyazaki, which definitely suits. Being a fan of both, I lov
