After years of killing on behalf of the government, Evan went off the grid as he stepped away from the program. Now he has become the Nowhere Man, a guy who helps those who can't help themselves.

He’s your last, best hope, but who can Evan Smoak turn to when he is out of options and his life is on the line? Orphan X is back and he is even more larger than life, more seemingly invincible, yet even more vulnerable and “human. And. He. Is. A. Target.
OUT OF THE DARK is Gregg Hurwitz’s latest razor-sharp tale of Evan Smoak, a product of a life of being trained to kill, no questions asked, but somewhere along the line, Orphan X began to ask questions, and he became a threat to be eliminated. ...more

4.5 Stars, rounded up. I read the first three books in the Orphan X series and thought it was just a trilogy. Then I discovered that there were three more books and had to see what else Evan Smoak has been up to. In the last book, his mentor and substitute father had been killed. Evan was trying to move forward in this life, but it was not to be. Orphan A was still out to kill all the orphans in the program in order to erase all traces of this top secret, somewhat unsanctioned and rogue program.

This one had me on the edge of my seat (when my cat wasn't crowding me in) and holding my breath for nearly the duration. Well written, good story, character(s) I liked, more that got what they deserved [in Evan Smoak's world]. Shifts between LA and DC. I wonder what Book #5 can possibly do that surpasses this one....

Out of the Dark
is my favorite in the series so far. Evan Smoak, aka Orphan X, is on the hunt for President Bennett. Bennett is the person behind killing all the Orphans from the covert group of assassins who were kidnapped as children and trained for super-secret activities. Bennett commissions Orphan A, Judd Holt to take down Evan. Orphan A and Orphan X have a history and A hates X.

This was another good addition to the series. I liked the new characters that were part of the two story arcs of the novel. I’m curious where the next one is going to go.
