Earth Abides is a Science Fiction Classic, a post-apocalyptic (not dystopian) novel written in 1949. Isherwood, Ish for short, is living in a bungalow in the desert doing research for his thesis when he is bit by a rattlesnake while picking up an abandoned hammer he finds in the sand. When Ish recovers from the bite, many weeks later, he learns that something like 99% of the world's population has succumbed to a flu-like plague. Shelves: dnf, post-apocalyptic
Abandoned this book three quarters of the way through. Found the protagonist to be unlikeable and the challenges faced by the tribe living in a post apocalyptic world to be uninteresting. The only reason why I stuck with for it for so long was that Stephen King used it as an inspiration for the, “The Stand�, which I found to be a much better novel.

Abandoned at the half-way point.

Earth Abides had a strong start and a compelling story... but it just never picked up and went anywhere. First published in 1949, it really doesn't stand the test of time, but that isn't the biggest flaw.

The "protagonist" was really a huge tripping point. He was passive, in every possible sense, and simply never took action without it being forced upon him in some way. It took him 22 years to decide to do something he should have decided after the first 6 months.
