OK, I'm going to have to shell out for my WorldCon membership just so I can nominate this book for a Hugo.

I recently noticed that Nora Jemisin's Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ profile lists her "influences" as Tanith Lee & Ursula K. Le Guin. I'm not sure if she put that in there or someone else did - but those just happen to be two of my most favorite authors; and yes, I can see the 'influence' on this book.

This got a lot better very quickly. A 3story book, first in a trilogy. I did want to carry on reading into the second book straight away. The story definitely has its own sense of logic and is reminiscent of LeGuin in that way.

Jemisin is the most original and talented author I've read in the last decade, if not longer. I can't believe I have to wait another year, at least, before I get my hands on the next book in this trilogy. SO GOOD. STOP EVERYTHING ELSE AND READ THIS BOOK ...more

My only small quibble is that this book seems like a lot of set up and backstory for the rest in the series. However, it is still enough of a story on it's own, and I can not wait for the next one to come out.

Anywho. No spoilers, just go read this. Really well written and amazing world building. THE END. Go read it now.

Brilliant world-building as Jemisin weaves together three narrative strands and keeps the reader guessing to to how they come together at the end. A world in which a handful of people weild seismic powers is obviously Fantasy, but the author sets up the rules of these powers in a very scientific, believable way. As the characters cross this unstable world, Jemisin tackles issues of prejudice, fear of those who are different, and acceptance and belonging in a community.
As a caveat, this is the fi
