I really liked the beginning of this book, but by the middle not so much. I thought it was really odd that the author kept on switching from one character's viewpoint and then stayed with one for a really long time (almost until you believed it was just them in thebook) and then to someone else's viewpoint. I do love the Elm Creek Quilters books. I think what I find most intriguing about this series is the way Jennifer can move back in time to expand a statement or idea that appeared in a previous book in modern times. In this book, she picks up the threads (no pun intended) from The Runaway Quilt and The Lost Quilter. She also further expands the beginning of Berstroms farms and families.

Jennifer Chiaverini has written another good book, maybe her best. I like the historical aspects, and enjoyed the idea that the least of us can contribute significantly to a cause we believe in. Connecting the making of a quilt to benefit the soldiers was a nice touch.

This is one of my favorite Elm Creek Quilt novels. I really enjoyed the history and thought it well researched. Living in Harrisburg PA, near Camp Curtain, I can picture the routes, mountain passes and beautiful farm lands referred to in this story. The characters were well developed and believable. A sound 4 star book for me.

I got bogged down in the details of the Civil War fighting, but still enjoyed the story.

The Civil War is not my favorite time period, so this was not destined to be a book that I was wildly in love with. I'm a much bigger fan of the Elm Creek Quilters books when the story line is about the modern day quilters. That being said, I did like the strong women characters in this book and how they took on challenges to support the Union cause. ...more

Not my favorite of the series- more historical and a great reminder of the rights women
