I'm a bit speechless right now. This book was phenomenal, in so many ways. And for a majority of the book I was really enjoying it, but that ending--while not mind-blowing or particularly shocking--gave me chills. It's these kinds of books, ones that you can't put down, that bring you to tears, or resonate deeply within you, that stay with you the most. Rarely do I find myself reading a book that I can't put down. Clegg has woven a compelling story of a tragedy and the impact it has on the families involved and an entire town. A quick and compelling read, Did You Ever Have a Family is a well-rendered story of tragedy and family. Told from alternating perspectives, this novel is an easy read and does not grow stale. Perhaps the voices of the individual characters lack some originality—the pot smoking kid sounds a bit like the fifty-year-old Connecticut woman who is much like the family man from the south—but the various viewpoints lend credibility to the story itself. Another Man Booker longlist finalist, and the best way I can describe this book is to say that it felt like watching a work of art being painted.
From that initial blank canvas that comes from introducing all the narrators, to the bold strokes outlining the plot as we figure out how everyone overlaps, and then, the last third of the book, where we watch all the details fill in - this was exquisitely engrossing every step of the way.
